F/A's What Planes Do You Like/dont Like?

Fri Apr 23, 2004 6:32 am

What planes do you F/A's on A.net enjoy working with or not working with. I have heard reports from all over the field and I just would like to see some reasons why or why not they are good a/c to work on.

Hey there,
Have to say that the B-727 and the B-757 are on my list of hates. I enjoy working the 320, 330 and the 319. Enjoy the 319 the most but the 330 is also nice to work in First class.

The 757-300. I don't like the aft galley's on it. It is smaller than the 200's and makes it difficult to take cart's in and out while trying to set up for services.

Cannot stand the U/D galley on the 744's! Nightmare to work in especially with a full load of J class passengers!
As for the favourite, I would have to say the 747 SP! Not too big & not too small either!

Love: our 3-class B777 in Economy (on domestic flights). The galley is huge, the aisles are a little wider than narrowbody Boeings', and the passengers have the little magic box in front of their eyes to keep them occupied!

Like: our A319s and A320s. The galleys have plenty of space and are laid out with "us" in mind, and the aisles are mercifully wide. ...I wish the overhead bins had an extra inch of depth, though.

Dislike: the B757. Our galley's oven-type carts are a disaster, and the aisles are so narrow. The lavs are the old blue-water flush type, too, which makes for a long and smelly trip to Hawaii!

HATE: the B737. The aisle is just too narrow, the galleys are so tight and user-unfriendly, the door evac slides are a mess to arm and disarm... this plane needs to be put out of its misery, in my humble opinion.

Both pictures showing a B737. I hate aircrafts without a forward bulkhead. Passengers from row 1 will start staring on you all the time...

The best aircraft to work on was BAe 146 G-DEBN. This aircraft was configuered with 2 full galleys (one at the front, one in the rear), great to work on!

Also nice: A300 (but the galleys are undersized), B757 & B737 (only BIG problem is, that the lavatory is located in the forward galley-MD80 is doing a better job!!), B767 (not enough space for the crew to work on)

My mum hates working on the 767-200's but loves the A320. She thinks that the A320 has a better cabin crew setup.

An interesting thread. I've always been amazed by how you F/A's manage to russle up food and drinks from such tiny galleys to feed hordes of ravenous and impatient pax, but it never occured to me that some planes are nicer to work on that others. Makes me appreciate the work you do all the more.

My Opinion here at Virgin Atlantic:

744 Lots of space. Galleys large and well designed although for some ridiculous reason our new 744s G-VWOW and G-VROC have no fridges in the galleys!!! These have been replaced by cool drawers that leak on take off and landing, great to have water in the cross aisles in an evac situation...not!

Aisles are fine in Y but are very wide in W and J. The upper class suite a/c have the widest aisle I have ever seen upstairs, it must be 5 feet wide.

LGW based a/c have an office for me...hurrah!

A343 My favourite. Small a/c (by our standards) with great galley at the back with all Y crew working together from it, this makes for a good team spirit. Wide aisles in Y make passing carts easy.

In J we have two galleys, at doors 1 and 2 so plenty of room. You do miss the width of the 744 though.

A346 Veeeery long! My walkaround before take off (to check cabin secure, doors armed and crew seated) before giving "cabin Secure" takes an age! Again well designed with plenty of galleys. One really good thing is the extra IFE control screen down in Y class. You dont have to trek up to the front to reset seats etc. From my point of view I have a great workstation with a huge touchscreen control for all cabin functions. Looks impressive and very modern, I frequently catch pax having a look at it! Best thing about the -600 though are the lovely red leather cabin jumpseats!

As an aside, would love to work the 777....maybe one day? Not really looking forward to A380s arriving in two years. I am sure they will be marvellous and very pretty but to control two full decks of pax and crew will need some doing. We are talking about a cabin crew complement of 27-29....scary!

Well at my airline Continental Micronesia, which is a subsidary of Continental Airlines, we only have 2 types of aircraft 767400 and 737800. I love flying the 767400 because it's big, has nice big aisles, big galley and just love it. I hate the 737800 because it's too small, and the aisles are tiny it's a pain in the rear trying to get that cart down the aisle.

Starlionblue: Well, as for United's B737s, I'm referring to 'em all-- our -300s and -500s. Still, even the newer B737s have that same narrow aisle and tight galleys.

4x-eld: The carts we use on the B737s and B757s (as well as the 74 and 76-300 in coach) are what United likes to call "New Tech." It's far from it! Basically, the carts have little rows of electric hot plates on which the main courses cook. The plastic trays simply slide out one-by-one along with the hot dishes, with the cold items supposedly kept cool on the opposite side of each tray by a chiller that blows in cold air from the back while the hot dishes cook. (There! I hope that explanation makes sense to you!) Of course, those carts rarely function properly. Often, a few rows of hot plates won't heat as well as the rest, leaving us with little icey surprises when we're already out in the aisles serving. Other times, the chillers will blast enough cold air to keep a few hot dishes from cooking through.... Well, I could go on....

Intheknow: My! What it must be like to work for a young, fresh global airline that actually stays ahead of the pack when it comes to introducing new airplanes and interior fittings! I am quite jealous. I would love to have that "dance hall" experience in the upper deck suites' aisle.... Yes, I do enjoy the B777. Just the sound of the engines is marvelous! And as for the A380, well-- in a way, I'm glad United is in no position at the moment to even consider taking on an airplane that will need about 30 cabin crew. What with the time and patience it takes to get about 16 senior United crew to agree on who sits where and does what on an international B747 flight, I can't imagine how long an A380 preflight briefing would last for us!

I am not an F/A but our crews like flying on the A330 (it is 'crew' and pax friendly and it's new in the fleet) and the B777 because of the space it offers.

Intheknow, if you're on VS9 on 22 May, come and say hi to 65A and C! I finally managed to fly Virgin Atlantic, an airline I've been wanting to try for years.

When my mother worked as a stewardess (that's what they called them at the time) for AA from 1958-60, she told me that she hated flying on the CV-880. I haven't asked her why as of yet.

She served on all of American's fleet at the time, including the then-brand new 707.

She even served on was AA Flight 11 (BOS-LAX); back then the equipment used for the flight was the 707 and its departure time was 11 AM.
Needless to say, when she heard about AA11 hitting the North Tower on 9/11/01; one of the things she thought was, "That's my old flight!"

We operate the 737-300, 700 & Airbus 319. My favourite by far is the 319 - very user-friendly. Safety equipment is easy to use & find. Galley equipment is easier to use. Most of all the Airbus has SPACE, when compared to the 737, and that's really nice.

Next is the 700. Cramped compared to the Airbus, but again most of the equipment is fairly new and thus easy to use.

Hate the 300. Old, dirty, cramped and often faulty equipment. Older "flush" toilets smell.

KBUF737:

The L-1011-1 (classic) has a large UFG (under floor galley) with a mid-service center topside between doors L2-R2.

The L-1011-500 had NO UFG...the galleys are topside...1 in the aft and 1 in the front between L1-R1. With this congfiguration it got kind of cramped but we managed....I think alot of F/As prefer the L-1011-1 with the UFG. This aircraft is used for ALL MILITARY movements.

I loved working on the L1011. Lots of space to move around an accomplish everything needed to be done. It was also an unofficial smoking lounge for the crew since they were below the passengers and you could exhale into the vent system in the ovens.
I hated the galleys on MD80s and B717. Actually, I wouldn't even call it a galley on the B717 -- It was a closet with a coffee pot and drain!
Old-old-old 727s had center galleys that divided the cabin but it was hell with multiple flight attendants using the one galley to serve both cabins (any plane that had wood paneling was nasty). We finally learned to put the smallest flight attendant into the galleys and keep the big ones out for
the drink service.
The aft / tale galley on the DC10 and 767 was awesome for space reasons alone. Finally a design that kept passengers away from hot ovens and coffee pots for safety reasons alone. (AND, when food was accidentally dropped no passengers saw. It's not like Denny's where you going just go into the walk-in freezer and get a new one.)
747s were always crazy with food packed into the smallest places and the need to do tray setups for ever service was extremely time consuming. UD Galley hardly had anything inside of it besides food and constantly meant running up and down through the flight to get more supplies or service items (depended on the configuration).

I hated TEA/EZS 737's as it didn't have a forward bulkhead giving the crew some sort of privacy. Some of them were also quite old and looked very shabby (HB-IIB was the worst).

At LX I like the ARJ because it's small and pax/crew interaction is better. However, the rear toilet is in the galley, so you have nowhere to hide to eat your crewmeal.
The A319/320/321 are nice, very spacious, but are flown by older (or verrrrry much older), ex SR f/a's who are mostly unfriendly with us, ex-Crossair f/a's.

Hate: any 737 we operate. They are so small and the customers don't care for them compared with the A320 (video offerings make a big difference!)

LOVE: our 772xp. It's a 3 class 777 with a lower lobe crew rest. I adore this plane! Any 777 will do, but the xp just rocks!

Honorable Mention Wide-body: 744. I used to love this plane, then in the past years they've reduced staffing on it to only 15 flight attendants which makes for a very long flight. It feels like you never stop running! With no PTV's it's a pain to work in Economy Cabin. It is however my favourite plane to pass ride in in First Suite!

Honorable Mention Narrow Body: A319. All the modern conveniences of the 320 (video, audio, wide cabin, wider seats, etc) but with a more intiment first class (8 seats). It's great working the Purser Position on this plane. I always enjoy it.

If I was a regional Flight attendant I would absolutely hate working EMB-120s... When I watch OO brasillias board it seems as though the flight attendant is constantly attempting to "scrunch" by the door to allow room for boarding pax, at the same time on the forward galley aircraft, the when the F/A wants to go to the galley, his/her ass is right in front of the row located directly accross... I would feel so intruded apon in that aircraft, like theres no where to hide!

In talking with several AS flight attendants, I have heard that they seem to enjoy working the 737-200 combis the best. I think it has more to do with the typical passenger (laid back Alaskan) than the actual plane though.

A pilot friend of mine tells me that many F/As hate the Fokker 100. First, the rear galley is tiny. So back in the days of on-board food service, the coach service cart had to be wheeled back from the first class galley.

Second, there are only the 2 forward exit doors and the 4 window exits. There are no rear galley doors, rear stairs, or even a hatch with a mechanism to drop the tailcone, like the old DC-9s.

Knowing that the only exits in an emergency, absent the window exits, are L-1 and R-1 is a little frightening.

This is a fun thread to read through, even though as F/A's we work to same types of Aircraft, our individual companies configure them, and outfit them with totally different types of equipment.

For me I personally enjoyed our old L-10's ( DL ) all versions, but I enjoyed the Lower Deck Galley a lot, it was very labor intensive, but there was no passenger interference. Now-a-days I still enjoy the wide-bodies the best the 767 and 777 they are great to work, and I enjoy having a little room to spread out.

For nostalgia purposes I really did enjoy working the B727...I'm a minority, but it was a hard working aircraft my company for so long.

I'm taking the liberty of speaking here on behalf of LH F/A's. Recently I flew LH YYZ-AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA on the A 346. Having read on this forum that LH F/A's absolutely hate it, I thought I would ask a crew member about it. She confirmed this, and she gave me a good reason for it. That would be the galley in Y class which is situated right where the passengers line up for the downstairs lavatories. It is very hard to work from there when 20 people are crowding the place. On the other hand the aft galley seemed quite spacious to me, but I have no idea about how F/A feel about it.

Anyway the idea is that F/A's at LH hate the A346's and love the 744's.

For us at NWA,

HATE the 757's to work...especially the -300...just gross and tight!

LOVE the A319/a320...LARGE galleys, wide isles large over head bins.

Upper deck of the 747-400, love that! My own little world.

People generally think I am crazy when I say this, but I LOVE the A300. Most flight attendants at AA either love it or hate it. The aft galley is large, the aisles wide and the configuration of the seats even makes it comfy. I hate where the forward lav is (right by the cockpit door, in the galley), but other than that, I love the plane. I also really like the 777. It's just so modern with digital everything... the cabin phone system and touch screen flight attendant control panels are nifty.

For narrowabody, I love the 738. It seems other F/As on here don't like it, but at AA ours have 757-like galleys in back. They stretch from L2 to R2 and offer plenty of space for F/As. The forward galley, however, is small. Even smaller than the MD-80. But you can manage.

I also really like the former TWA 757s, but really dislike ours. The MD-80 is fine as long as your flight is under three hours. The former TWA MD-80s I could do without. 762s are awesome... haven't been on the 763's since they've been changed to two-class. 30 in first class sounds scarry.

I love the 737 300/700, great noise on take off and landing also due to the reverse thrust braking system.

Galley small,but very crew friendly.

I really like the 767-300 , good galleys, very workable/flexible.

757's are ok with galleys at doors 2, for more space.Charter 757's are bad to work on.

A319/320 galleys are pretty good too, passengers bit squeezed in though.

737-400 galleys are ok too, like the cabin also.

Used to hate the DC10 aft galley -too small and VERY noisy / too close to the bathrooms , yuk.

Not too keen on 747-400 either, that crummy staircase / too long u/d. 747-200 was more workable.

The one thing i do hate though is small wardrobes / lack of for club passengers, they get so angry when you can't hang things up.

My all time favourite will be the A310. Old aircraft but by far the best we ever had, even if for a short 20 months.

We hated the B737-200, but have to say that they were the best we had back in 1983 when the fleet was made up of old B720b.

Today we love the A320/319. Although our 319's have half galleys at the rear due to the repositioning of the left lav which is now where the left half of the rear transverse galley should have been.

I do not mind the B733 but now that we have a new fleet of A320/319, with a better looking interior, leather seats and IFE I will not miss the B733 when they are eventually phased out, which are a pain to dis/arm the slides.

Used to love the ATP - mainly because flights were short. Hated the Avro RJ70 on long flights (over 2 hours).

Would love to fly on the A330. But the propsect of flying long haul is not very appealing. But that's in my dreams anyway.

Fairchild/Dornier 328 Regional Jet. Nice wide aisles and comfy galley. Very cool.
Bring back McDonnell Douglas & T W A!!

Tough question. I like the Embraer 135 galley because it has that nice table that folds out. Only bad part is that you become very familiar with the person's feet in 1A because the ice drawer also doubles as a nice foot rest.
Embraers have a curtain in the galley unlike the CRJ so at least you get some privacy when eating or taking a break.

My favorite aircraft at AA:

Super80:Just love AA's 2 coach galley configurations.. Also the Super80 seems like it handles turbulence like an old time champ.

A300:You gotta love those overhead bins....especially going down to the Caribbean. This plane gives a spacious open cabin feel. Great for non-reving with a capacity of 16F and 251Y!

TWA 757's: You feel as though your on a widebody compared to AA 757. The TWA 757's have no overwing exits and the aft lavs located in the middle of the cabin.
