IB To Launch MAD-MVD

Fri Apr 23, 2004 9:09 pm

Effective July 6, Iberia will launch a thrice weekly non-stop flight between Madrid and Montevideo, Uruguay. Iberia will be the only airline to offer non-stop service in this market, and will shave about three hours from the current journey.

At LAST! Any idea what plane they will be flying? An A340? It's definitely good to see that the carriers have not forgotten MVD...

Great news for the people in Uruguay.

Interesting to see if the flight will be daylight from Madrid as it is with Sao Paulo, Rio and the second one to Buenos Aires.

I wonder why Pluna dosen't operate this flight nonstop instead of going via Rio De Janeiro. Looking at PLuna's current route map they have a very limited number of destinations.

Chepos:

They go through GIG now? I thought the 767 flew MVD-GRU-MAD (or at least it did the last time I went to GRU).

Well, probably they do it to have one more flight per day to Brazil (you know, PU doesn't have many planes). Actually, the MVD-GRU or GIG run must be a gold mine. Every time I go there the plane is full.

Guys,

This is wonderful news for MVD! As Latin Aviation has mentioned, IB will be operating its 340-300 on the route.

PU151,

PU code-shares with parent-company, RG, on the GIG-MAD route as RG already covers the GRU-MAD run.

Now, questions:

What's going on with AR's negotiations/plans to acquire PU's controlling interest from RG?

What is happening with AA2000's concession to operate MVD? We had a discussion series here on A.net last month on the topic and no one seemed to have any information. Any news? Will a new terminal be built? What's the timeframe? What plans does AA2000 have for MVD???

cheers,

Chepos, I think the reason is not only passengers but also cargo. There is a deficit for cargo on the route and they can also count on Brazil for that.

About AA2000, there is the following article published recently. Sorry is in Spanish but it mentions that MVD will have soon its first jetway by September!

trabajos comenzaron formalmente ayer.

One question though. . .I'm not positive on this but I believe the main runway at Carrasco is not very long, somewhere around 8600 feet. I know an A340 can use a short runway and fly intercontinental (look at AF from SXM), but won't it need to be weight restricted? MVD-MAD is a long long route!

I believe PU makes a stop in GIG on its way to MAD not only to drop passengers off but also to refuel since their aircraft probably does not have sufficient range to do MVD-MAD non-stop.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

WOWWWWWWWWWWWW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is indeed the BEST news since the past 10 years, I dont remeber an scheduled service from MVD direct to europe, and I was born in 1986. Great, Great news for Uruguay indeed !!!, I hope it can last.

MVD have the main 24-06 runway in operations, the 24 does have the ILS and its about 8700ft long, but actually the new 01-19 runway is also available with an ILS (not sure it its already on operations), but its does look really well, but its about 7000ft aprox if im not wrong, but its shorter than the 24-06. IB served MAD-GRU-MVD 3xweekly couple of years ago with the A340.

PU's 767 does have range to make MVD-MAD without problem, SW does fly EZE-MAD non stop. Since theres no been direct service from MVD to MAD theres no need to PU to fly direct, if they can have more pax/cargo by stopping at GRU.
The flight its MVD-GIG-MAD 3xweek not GRU.

About the jetway, not really happy to add a f*cking gate in the same old building, I was expceting them to build a new terminal with at least 5 jetways............I dont really understeand this decision though. And besides, just 1 its almost the same as nothing, MVD have more than 20 daily departures. What do you guys think?

Thanks,
Mauro.

Great news! I guess IB realises that WK (American Falcon), with whom it codeshares from EZE-MVD every day, might not be around formuch longer. An A343 would be about the right size, but in any case, it would be another boost for Uruguayan tourism and a mjor one for business too (MVD has hundreds of banks; it's like the ZRH of South America!).

Chepos:

GIG must be lucrative. I'm sure RG also had a say in that stop. JK flew MAD-EZE with fairly packed 763ERs non-stop, and UX replaced them on the route. Range ain't the problem, or so it seems. PU has a small fleet remember, of:

1 ATR-42 (+1 on order)
3 B732s
1 B733
1 B752
1 B763ER

They fly, from MVD and PDP, to Salto, ASU (w/ PZ), EZE, AEP, SCL, POA, GIG, GRU, MAD + charters to RCE, SSA and FLN. MIA is codeshared w/ RG.

CX340:

Carrasco can handle 744s, 763s and 772s no problem!

Mauro,

Yes it seems the plans are so unclear. They should built a new terminal. There seem to be no plans as there were with airports in Argentina.

I never forget as a kid in 1980 I took a flight with my family from Carrasco to Aeroparque with a Pluna Viscount. Waiting for the flight I saw a KLM DC10 departing from Carrasco. So nice to see the blue giant there.

Interesting to see if the flight will be daylight from Madrid as it is with Sao Paulo, Rio and the second one to Buenos Aires.

BUE must be the third, therefore. IB has daily services to both, RIO and SAO separately, one flight for each city:
MAD-GRU: 00:30-06:05; GRU-MAD: 15:45-06:45
MAD-GIG: 12:30-15:50; GIG-MAD: 20:25-11:10

I wonder why Pluna dosen't operate this flight nonstop instead of going via Rio De Janeiro.

PU is a Varig-owned company for while (RG wants to sell it), this flight should go through GIG for attending the demand between RIO and MVD, and from RIO to MAD as well - PU has a limited no. of destinations, as someone said above, due to have a limited fleet; By the way, would a 767 reach MVD - MAD without the stop at RIO??

Brasuca,

Yes, as both LVZXV and PU757 have pointed out, PU's 763 has sufficient range to reach MVD-MAD. As noted, PU's parent company, RG, wants to serve GIG-MAD and uses the PU flight to serve the city-pairs.

PU757,

I just CANNOT believe AA2000 will not replace Carrasco's 1940's vintage terminal. I mean, the place sure has plenty of emotional value for me as I've been traveling to MVD since I was an infant, but it is simply WAY too small. Adding a couple of jetways (huh? connected to what?) will not solve any issues. I suspect, and hope, this is simply a temporary solution until a permanent replacement terminal is planned and constructed.

As for nostalgia, this airport holds a special place in my heart. I remember when check-in was still in the main terminal, with several European carriers, including SK and KL, operating their stands.

Arriving at MVD as a child on Pan Am's huge 747's was always a treat and meant I would be spending the next couple of weeks on vacation at Punta del Este and riding horses at the family ranch.

cheers,

PDPsol

PDPSol,

Yeah, I hope so, they said they were going to build a new terminal so I think they'll, even though I dont know where they're going to place the jetway lol, that terminal is definatly not designed for jetways so I just cant imagine a jetway there, would be a mess for me Big grin

Any idea if that jetway is going to be like the old fashioned american jetway or POA style?

Thanks.

How is Pluna doing? Is this new Iberia route at all a risk to Pluna even staying in business or are they fine?

RG's 763ERs can fly GRU-LIS and GIG-AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA non-stop. MVD-MAD is well within range limits. Plus, there is always RCE should fuel-burn increase.

Great new for Uruguayans

I remember some European carriers used to serve MVD some time ago: AF, LH, KL, IB, etc. Maybe BA or TP at a time landed in MVD too?

Argentina:

BA or TP? Never. SK used to fly DC-10s (with about 6 stops en-route!) from CPH in the '80s.

Aeroflot also used to serve Montevideo in the early 1990's with IL62.

Do you know that there is a web site dedicated to airports in Uruguay?

It is a sister site of the great www.aeropuertosarg.com.ar

Any possibility of our friends from Uruguay to contribute with more photos taken at MVD or other airports?

Carrasco used to havea good terrace. Would be great to see pictures taken in the 1980s or 1990s.

Saludos,

Lima

Man, I loved that terrace. I saw a KL 747 landing from there once. Sorry Lima, no pics, I was too young at the time! I used to play rugby 7-9 kms from the runway, under final approach, and I can tell you, I remember the sound of big planes going in. Those were good times.  Sad
