Air Tran In Wichita Eagle Today

Hello everyone! In today's Wichita Eagle, there was an article talking about a potential deal between the city and Air Tran. One of the stipulations for additional city subsidies is for Air Tran to add two new flights from ICT...one west and one east. The paper claims that they are close to a deal.

Does anyone have any predictions what city Air Tran will open out east and west? My guess is that they'll either add another flight to ATL or open a new BWI route out east. DEN or LAS are my choices for the "west" city.

Good deal we need more LCC like Airtran at ICT

Ok here goes.

For the west I say,,,,,,,,,,,,,,LAS or LAX. Little or no competition on either route.

For the east I say maybe BWI, MCO or ATL. My guess is it will either be MCO or another ATL.

I bet it would be LAS for the west route and MCO for the east route.

Currently ICT has the following non-stop service to the west (assuming DFW is not west):
DEN - 1x BA146, 2x CRJ, 1x A-319, 1x CR7
PHX - 2x CRJ
LAS - 1x MD-83

The largest aircraft that serves Wichita is the MD-83 on the LAS route.
Boeing Flown: 701,702,703;717;720;721,722;731,732,733,734,735,737,738,739;741,742,743,744,747SP;752,753;762,763;772,773.

I work for AirTran as the Regional Sales Manager in DFW, so I really don't have the "correct" answer for your question, but I'd guess LAS.

Everyone wants to go to LAS !!

Good for ICT and of course, good for FL !!

Yeah I definately see LAS or LAX...maybe something like SEA? For east, perhaps New York, Boston, Chicago (again)?

East

BWI. The Airtran northern focus city/mini hub. Provides one-stop to Boston and Rochester. MCO isn't good because to Airtran it's just a one-stop through ATL.

West

LAX. Why would ICT want additional service to LAS when LAX goes un-served. Second choice would be DFW with one-stop connects to LAS/LAX west and MCO to the east.

Although I don't think it's that certain whether they'll do this, it would be a nice surprise. Regardless, I think we'll see AirTran stick around with a new contract of some sort.

My predictions on the new routes:
Westward - DFW...Allegiant already goes to LAS and DFW will offer connections to more destinations. DFW will grow for AirTran so that'll bring more cities.

Eastward...not really sure. 3 ATL flights should be enough...we had 3 a while back and it didn't work out. BWI isn't really that necessary...ATL works for ICT with connections to the east coast. MCO/BOS/LGA etc...O&D routes probably can't be supported with Wichita like the MDW flights.

With the popularity and exposure that Air Tran has right now here in Wichita, I wouldn't be surprised if they try LAS to take Allegiant business away. They're kind of doing that on their MLI-LAS service...competing with G4's PIA-LAS service. LAX wouldn't be a bad choice either, considering the connections opportunity.
