NWA World Class Or Korean First?

Sun Apr 25, 2004 2:16 am

Which class would you rather fly on NWA World or Korean First. I have the option to fly either this coming up September to HKG.
Let me know.

I have never been on any of them but I believe that KE is upgrading its upper-classes in order to offer a truly premium product. I am sure you can find more info on this here in a.net or in KE's website. If you can get a ticket on the new KE's first class in September, I would definitely try it.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

I have flown on KE in business class and the service was VERY nice. The food was good and the seats comfortable. It wasn't top tear but still of a world standard. The other advantage is the connection in ICN. That airport is one of the nicest I have ever been in. The KE lounges are spectacular with huge vistas of the airfield. That alone made it worth my while to take KE as opposed to connecting in MSP or DTW on NW

For what it's worth, I'd fly NWA over KE any day of the week. I have actually flown on both transpacific and I'd say NWA is one up on KE. However, there are other reasons I'd fly NWA vs. KE.

NWA's WorldBuisness Class product is not a true Buisness class, nor is it a tur first class. It's more of a hybrid of the two. NWA did this because they feel that thus way they can make more money with only two classes.

(arrgh, the form keeps on resetting after I click on 'post the message')

I wonder if anyone here who bashes KE actually flew on Korean Air before.

Can only speak for KE business class, the service, catering and comfort is at near top level.

Geez and isn't that funny AirxLiban, we have a few of your Lebanese countrymen who often pilot Korean jets across the pacific. Must say these days I would much rather fly with them than touch a MEA aircraft.

Anyhow, enough of the passionate comments (from all sides)...

Amirs - where would you be originating your journey from?? This may determine exactly what aircraft type you would get and the configuration. It is true that the upgrade is coming (too slowly I believe), but it would not be ready by September this year. Some cities also offer a "P" class which is listed as higher than "F", due to the configuration 12P versus 16F on a 744 for example.

As a KE contract employee for the last four years, I have of course flown Premium, First, Business and Economy hundreds of times now, but it would be helpful to know your planned starting city before I comment further.

Cheers.

Amirs,

Guessing by the question you ask, I guess you've never flown on KE. If you had, you wouldn't have to ask us. I'd fly any day KE before NW, even if it involves a detour or an extra stop. In fact I'd fly KE any day before any other non-Asian airline, particularly American carriers. Have a nice trip on KE!

Flykal, what do you think of Asiana? Will they be extending their route network anytime soon?

I have flown on KE in F two times. The service was adequate. However, the airline I now work for will not send us on KE no matter what. There are a few airlines that are on our "no fly" list.

I bet the number of people who participate within these discussions who've flown both KE F and NW WBC can be counted on one hand. Therefore, you're not going to get an accurate perception...

I agree with IP.

However, you might want to check out the websites of the carriers. Check out their in-flight services. It basically comes down to how much time you want to spend in the air or how many miles you want to accrue in your frequent flyer program.

The KE service isn't daily DFW/ICN so that might be a determining factor. Of course, flying on a new 777 would be quite an experience if you've never flown on one. NW's 747-400s are very nice as well, and if you're lucky, you may get one of the few newly redone -400s with the new World Business Class Seats!

Ultimately, it comes down to your preferences.

I have not flown KE let alone their F to be able to compare, but I have flown WBC on NW numerous times. As much as I like WBC, I would also opt for KE's F, simply cause it is F. I imagine the food and service to be of a higher standard on KE despite the fact that others say they are no comparison to other Asian carriers.

Maybe a visual would help you a bit.

Korean's First Class. Seems nice and comfortable.

These pictures are of NW's old WBC which is most likely what you will get to HKG, though the upper deck of the 742 (2nd picture) may beat KE's seats in terms of comfort and legroom. They are NW's old First Class seats and I can tell you are some of the best seats currently out there. If you choose to fly NW, try to get seats in the upper deck of the 742 on the NRT-HKG sector.

This is a picture of NW's new WBC that is still being rolled out on the 744's. I have tried this seat on the A330 and I got to say I was more than impressed. (Yes I have flown the Asian and European carriers full flat business class seats. I find these on par with CX/SQ/BA etc...)

If you want more information on NW's WBC service, let me know. I wrote a few trip reports on my numerous flights and can link them for you if you wish.

Whatever you decide, you can't go wrong with either.

I am planning to fly on September 18 from NYC and return from HKG on the 23.

I just got another offer to fly JAL on the outbound and return with CX via SFO.
If that works out, then i think that's the best. Its a bit more expensive.

I didn't know koreans made jets. Presumably, you are referring to KE aircraft. Either way, i didn't know that.

In any event, my original comment was made not from a safety standpoint, but rather the fact that I imagine the interior of any of their aircraft smelling like vinegar, even though I know that this is not the case. Call me childish if you will...but its just the image that i have in my mind.

getting back onto the topic...sinec you're going from NYC you could do either one somewhat directly. do you have some sort of mileage programme preference?

anyway, as is obvious, since i have NOT flown korean air and i have NOT flown on NWA my contributions to this thread are of the negative variety, i'll let you guys continue discussing the matter.

Edit: i saw amirs follow up post saying he was flying from new york, so i deleted the bit about where are you starting from

I think that all of NW 744 are to be fitted with the new WBC by the end of this year. So if you are flying in september, the odds are much better of having the new WBC than the old WBC. If you are leaving from JFK, then you will be stopping in NRT if you fly NW.

Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing! It's a bonus if you can fly the plane again!!

Flew the exact route on NW to HKG. Perect flight and service. I'd go with NWA.

I would fly KE only if they will keep a good distance from North Korean or Soviet air space.
But seriously Asiana is the better Korean carrier.
