PPL Pilot Epaulette

Sun Apr 25, 2004 10:42 am

Holding a Private Pilots License with a Multi Engine rating, are you eligible to wear a single strip Epaulettes?

Any help would be appreciated!

AFAIK, GA pilot attire isn't regulated by the military, so it doesn't really matter. You can wear four-gold-stripe epaulets and nobody will know (or care).

You can wear as many as you like, as Captain (P1) of your aircraft you are perfectly entitled you wear 4 bars.

My opinion though: avoid them at all costs. When you fly Dash 8s or 737s you can wear what your airline gives you - 2 or 3 stripes usually.

A PPL going out to his C152 with stripes on just gets laughed at....

Honestly, take advantage of flying without them, when you are forced to wear them every day it soon gets awfully boring.....

...but they might think you're a moron. Some people get really weird about false display of rank, as if you're taking something that they worked extremely hard to earn. I can understand that to some degree.

On a side note, I believe it's a crime in the US to wear military insignia you didn't earn?

Just to do with family members, had a lot of people not believe in me, and well, I showed them, Just want to put on a Uniform and pay them all a visit.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

"Just want to put on a Uniform and pay them all a visit"

Heck do it! I walk round Tescos after a flight in my uniform, but my partner (who has no flying experience apart from as a passenger) could wear my uniform completely legally and also walk round Tescos in it.

When you finally earn it and are forced to fly in it every time, you will soon tire of the uniform.

The general public, however, never do. It elicits stares, questions and some form of respect everywhere you go.

Any pilot who tells you he/she hates the attention and questions the uniform attracts away from the aircraft and airport is a liar - we all love it!

but in all seriousness, 1 stripe is for students, 2 is for private pilots, 3 for commercial pilots, a 4 for atps correct?

I don't believe there's a stripe system for GA flyers...in the airlines its usually:

2 stripes - Flight Engineer (where applicable) (does a Relief F/O use 2 or 3)
3 stripes - First Officer
4 stripes - Captain

USAFHummer is correct (in most cases anyway). There really isn't an official system for GA or commercial. As for GA, just wear the uniform for Angel flights and to impress family  Smile/happy/getting dizzy. Commercial airline use of epaulets for showing seniority is at their discretion.

yea its true that impersonating an officer is a crime in the military but a captains double bars in the u.s. airforce is alot different than a captains four stripes in the civilian field. as for me i have to wear these shoulder insignias for my rank its a single diagonal stripe on the strip
