Arresting Devices At BHX

Mon Apr 26, 2004 2:20 pm

I was looking at this picture at BHX, and noticed a wire 'devide' at the end of the runway, presumably for arresting purposes of errant aircraft. Is this what its used for ???

I'm not sure that would stop even a 737. If it is at the railway end of the runway, it is probably a set of trip wires which send an alarm to the signalbox. Southend and Gatwick have similar systems.

The "arrester" device is the ILS for runway 33. The control tower at BHX does have the facility to turn the signals on the railway line to red and stop trains from using the piece of track at the end of the runway at the press of a button.

OK...

sounds like a lot of airport specific info here. It seemed rather odd to see those things out at the end of the runway.

It's nothing out of the ordinary, just a perspective thing from where the photograph was taken.
