BA 747-400 On Lisbon Route In June

Mon Apr 26, 2004 8:00 pm

I recently booked a trip to Lisbon in June (which just happens to be at the same time as Euro2004) and I noticed that the aircraft I am on is a 747-400!!!!

I have booked Club Europe and therefore was able to choose a seat on the upper deck in what is actually Club World on international flights! A real treat for Club Europe passengers who travel regularly to Lisbon.

From what I can determine, 747's will be used once a day for flights on June 11,12,13,14, 21, 22, 24, 25 and July 5, 6th to boost capacity on these days to deliver Englands fans to the England games (I would imagine) which will fall around these periods. I'm not sure about other periods, they seem to be normal A319/20 or 767/757's service at other times.

I think this is most exciting as it is unusual to see the 747's on European routes, even more rare to see British Airways 747's on this route. Well done BA!

P.S: Does anyone know if the 747 would be able to park at a gate using the air bridges or would it have to park at a remote stand?

Rumour has it that Club Europe passengers on these flights can sit in the First Class seats of the B744. Log on to with your Exec Club membership and see if you can get a 1st Class seat.

BA operated many B 747 flights to France especially CDG during the France Soccer World Cup of 1998.

One of the main factors then was the major AF pilots strike!!!

But expect BA to send many B 744 flights all over GERMANY when the 2006 World Cup comes there!!!

Richardw, thanks for the tip, however it was only when I was choosing seats after I had completed purchase did I realise the aircraft type as a consequence of the seat map! The whole of what is normally Club World downstairs (9 to row 14) and upstairs (60-68 roughly) and First (1-5) were showing up on the map.

Sadly as things stand currently, as at the time of booking, all of First was shown to be unavailable. Likewise so was most of club. I severly doubt the plane is this sold in Club as a whole. Hopefully things will become clearer when 24 hours before comes around for online check in!

If you have any tips to how I could try and secure a seat in First, they would be most useful. I am a silver card holder, if you think that would make any difference?

Also BA fly 747s on some routes to Scotland in the days before Xmas and after NYs. Aer Lingus have leased some heavy metal for the same days, L1011s etc for LHR-DUB.
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

Parking at Lisbon will almost certainly be remote as the biggest I have seen on the jetways are B757s.
The only regular B743 is the Angola plane and that sits midfield along with the TAP A340s for much of the day.
Varig aircraft tend to park to the north of the terminal on the cargo ramp.
But I also understand that the Airforce/TAP maintenance ramps are also going to be used during the football games.(This may however just be for parking of charters through)
Remote parking remains the favored method here with such small terminal.
Its a pleasant enough airport but the only problem is the taxiway/runway lay at the north end !
When landing from the south you have to go to the end of the runway and turn left down a parallel taxiway onto the little used cross runway back over the main and onto the terminal ramps.
If traffic gets really heavy this is going to be a logistical nightmare.

LH is also boosting capacity - most flights from AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA and MUC are operated by a 270-seat A300-600 - and availability in cheaper classes is almost always 0!

AF seems to be mainly sticking to narrowbody Airbuses, though availability is low here also.

BA is flying 757s, 767s and 747s into LIS (3 daily flights).

Looks like if you would want to fly down for the soccer is should be fairly hard to get a good deal - LH is advertising fares from Germany at well over 600?, when the normal W class fare for this rounting would be under 300?.

British Airways actually have a press release about the use of the 744. According to BA an additional 14,000 seats are available for the duration of the tournament.
Let's Go British Caledonian!

You will find good spotting locaitons in Germany, as the minor airports have mostly great viewing decks.

You will be able to get some rare shots in these places...
