Air Tahiti Nui To Start New York To Papeete Flight

Tue Apr 27, 2004 3:56 am

and also nonstop PPT-SYD flights in 2005.

News from Tahitipresse:

Air Tahiti Nui to open flights to Papeete from New York, Sydney in June 2005

(Tahitipresse) - Air Tahiti Nui will start up non-stop flights to Papeete from New York and Sydney in late June 2005 to help the French Polynesia government reach its goal of 300,000 tourists in 2007.

The new flights will start up upon delivery of Air Tahiti Nui’s fifth Airbus A340-300 aircraft, which is due in June 2005. Air Tahiti Nui is planning three weekly New York-Papeete flights and two weekly Sydney-Papeete flights.
The recent decision by Air Tahiti Nui’s board of directors on the new flights takes into consideration several key demographic and logistical characteristics. New York was chosen because of its strong potential of providing Tahiti with more visitors both from the U.S. East Coast and Europe. This will be the first time in the history of Tahiti’s tourism industry that direct flights will be operated out of New York.

For Europeans, the New York-Papeete service will open up a new gateway to Tahiti other than Los Angeles for more than 27 European cities. Also, the new service will considerably reduce the inconveniences of current long voyages and/or the number of en route stops.
The opening of the direct Sydney-Papeete service addresses the strong tendency among Australians to travel overseas. These flights also will reopen multi-destination South Pacific stopover voyages for certain types of travelers, particularly tourists from Mainland China.

The decision Air Tahiti Nui’s board approved on April 13 was taken after reviewing studies and analyses made about various options for new services.

The new Airbus aircraft ordered early this year will have the same seating capacity and arrangement as Air Tahiti Nui’s four other Airbus planes. Each offers six first class (Poerava First) seats, 24 business class (Poerava Business) seats and 264 economy class (Moana) seats. All passengers will have individual video screens and the special Airbus A340-300 comfort that was voted “the most comfortable long-distance plane” in a 2003 poll conducted by Skytrax.

Air Tahiti Nui’s new Airbus will be named “Nuku Hiva” after the main island in the Marquesas Islands. It will be equipped with CFM56-5C/P engines manufactured by CFM International.

Air Tahiti Nui presently serves Los Angeles with 13 weekly return flights, Paris with five return weekly flights, Auckland with three return weekly flights, Narita with three return weekly flights and Osaka with one weekly return flight.

Sounds interesting. According to the GCM, the direct route is 6289 nm, so it's going to quite a haul - around 10-11 hours or something like that.

Very Cool! Are they going to codeshare with anyone to feed traffic into New York?

Thanks.

Last July, I flew JFK-Papeete. I had a stopover in LAX. Flew UA from JFK-LAX and Air France from LAX to PPT. It was 7.5 hrs to PPT from LAX and 5 hours to LAX from JFK. There was a 4 hour lay over in LAX. Boy I wish they had the non-stop last year!

That's great as the New York catchment area will service the Québecois people who are mostly French speaking tourists. I'm sure Montréal was a consideration for TN when looking for a North American east coast destination.

I'm surprised they haven't also launched a PPT-SCL-EZE flight as well.

Great news. What's the flying time? Those vacationers are sure going to want to hit those beaches after being on a plane for so long.

Any word on if they will launch another US route after this? I would like to see SFO served by TN. That would be cool. Whatever happened to their plan to acquire the A345 and fly PPT-CDG n/s? Is this plan dead for now? It would be a good idea IMHO, but thats me.

My in laws went to Tahiti last year on Air Tahiti Nui (LAX-PPT). They said the service was excellent and the flight did not seem that long. However if you go make sure you have budgeted accordingly. Tahiti is VERY expensive.
Never take financial advice from co-workers.

In my experience Air Tahiti's service is average at best. A beautiful place to visit, but yes, very expensive.
Keepin' it real.

Spent ten days in Tahiti over xmas this past year. Flew Air Tahiti Nui and their service and comfort levels were exceptional. Yes, tahiti is VERY expensive, our hotel was about 450 per night, and dinner was approx 200 per night for two. The night I got there I ordered room service, 29 dollars for a burger, fries and a drink.....OUCH.

We traveled to Tahiti last year, flew TN, and were quite pleased with their service... though I am not sure anything can make changing planes at LAX worthwhile.

And I will endorse the observations above relating to cost- in Tahiti, there appears to be little need for fncy clothes, so pack that bag with money, and lots of it!

Try to book an all-inclusive hotel deal if you can.

great news. i believe more packages will be available to tahiti in the australian market. when i did a bit research on packages to tahiti AND HER ISLANDS for my last trip to tahiti, it really annoyed me quite a bit as most inclusive packages were US based prices and the prices were great, regarding to the tahitian standard. But from australia, certainly there r a few, but the prices and accommodation options are far too limited. plus i don't have to transit AKL, i mean AKL is a nice airport, but not great for transit as it can take up to more than 2hrs to queue up in front the immigration if you r foreign national during peak flight arrivals which coincide the departure time for TN, hence the arrival time of your connection flight from australia.
personally, i'd expect TN to fly to MEL instead of SYD as the current TN codeshare flights operated by QF from SYD provide smooth connection through AKl, while from MEL, it involves 1 night stopover in AKL. And from either of SYD and MEL, u can expect all flights to be fully booked with TN's twice weekly frequeny. Maybe they should do both
this may change Air New Zealand's leading position in south pacific as these days, going via auckland is a must, but NZ will still have a much higher frequency than TN as an alternative option. This could force NZ to add PPT into its pacific express fare route where PPT is the only south pacific destination of NZ not in that fare.
So, great news for Aussies and kiwis.
and i' m looking forward to fly out from sydney with TN

Are you sure this is a non-stop flight? It does not say so in any of the posting or is it just an extension from L.A.?

Is TN linked to any other airline cooperation-wise? I know they code-share with AF on the CDG-LAX-PPT, but are there any other linkages? On which FFP can you collect miles when flying with TN?

TN is also linked with American. I am flying there this weekend using American Miles.

someone mentioned $29.00 for a burger fries and drink at PPT.

At SXM, $10.00 at the Sunset bar and grill for a great burger, fries and ice cold Corona!  Smile
