Air Arabia Starting Cairo, Egypt On April 27

Tue Apr 27, 2004 7:02 am

The first Arab low-fare carrier, Sharjah-based Air Arabia will finally launch flights to Cairo on April 27, its 3rd Egyptian destination.

The route will be served 2x weekly and I am sure will increase later on.

SHARJAH TO CAIRO G9 049 2205 0105#* Tue, Sun
CAIRO TO SHARJAH G9 050 0050# 0620 Mon, Wed

Certainly not wonderful times, but better than nothing.

They currently serve Alexandria 5x weekly and it will be increased to daily on June 1. They also serve Assiut 2x weekly.

Well I guess it's good news but I'm still alittle surprised since it's a route that Egyptair operates on (their flights continue to Mumbai), and they usually only allow full-service carriers to compete on a route rather than LCCs.

Its good to see Alexandria going daily and Assuit is expected to go up to 4x weekly in September.

Are they not allowed to open flights to Amman or is it just because there is no demand?

I think I would be a regular, but that is probably not good enough!

I thought Sharjah - Sharm el Sheikh was also planned but I guess not  Sad

It seems that Jordan doesn't fancy LCCs competing with Royal Jordanian.

I might be going back to CAI in August (I was in the superb city for a month last year) with my girlfriend, whom I might be able to convince to go to SHJ for a short trip.  Wink/being sarcastic

Pe@rson - short and inexpensive, their prices are amazingly low! I'm guessing that the price will be the same as to Alexandria, so it will be about $82. Anyone have any experience with the airline to tell us what its like?

OD720,

It makes me wonder what their plans for A6-ABX and A6-ABY are. These were the two ex-Air Malta A320s and are not painted in the full Air Arabia colors. Also the seating configuration is a bit different I think.

I wonder if they are planning to keep them only temporarily or not?

BA,

From your route map I see that they will need more than 2 A320s so maybe they will keep the older A320s for a while.
I don't think that they have any new ones on order either.

How is the seating configuration different from the newer ones? I know that older A320s don't have the overhead LCD screens but shouldn't a single class configuration look the same?

Pe@rson, Have a great time in Cairo (but beware during August it gets pretty hot). You should go to Alexandria and a Red Sea resort like Sharm El Sheikh (which was voted to have the best beaches in Africa and the Middle East). Alexandria is an amazing place, and they have completely renovated all the areas that are along the beach (called Kornieesh). You can get to see the Alexandria Library! As for Sharm El Sheikh, were do I start. It has amazing beaches, water sport, desert activites, the most luxurious hotels, wild nightlife and friendly people.

Please email me if you decide to go  Big thumbs up

Thanks BA

I have to say 150 seats on a LCC's A320s seems like a very comfortable arrangement. Easyjet's A319 are configured with 156 seats!

Air Arabia won't make a profit until 2006 because of their very high spending on infrastructure, staff, and aircraft.

That's all I know.

Horus is right, August is pretty hot. Still, its great to be in Cairo anytime.

My wife still talks about the time we went there (her first visit) and even walking through the airport, people were saying hello to us and welcome and so on.

It is nice to see some new carriers to the MidEast. Hopefully, it will result in better service and lower prices for all.

One more question, what is their current fleet plan. They already operate 4 A320s. Do they have anymore on order or are they gonna lease more out? Are they sticking with the A320?

I heard they will be recieving 2 more A320s at the end of the year.

They are planning to stick with the A320 as far as I know.

I've been in Egypt during July-August and it was hot! I took the train to Aswan from Cairo and little I knew that people don't go out at noon. I haven't experienced anything like it before.
In any case, I loved my trip and would go back and do it all over again.

As for Air Arabai, 2 more A320s sound excellent but will they be able to make money with 150 seats on an A320?

Wish them all the best.

Their new silver livery, IMO is the best of any low cost airline, it looks fantastic! Very classy!

Pe@rson,

Hours wrote,

I will just add a bit,

Sharm is also quite nice for spotters, not that busy, but quite a few Russian birds go in and out. Most arrivals can be read of from centre (or beach) of Na'ama Bay located right between Sharm el Sheikh and the airport. Downside (unless you like that of course) is that Na'ama Bay is quite busy and very touristic.

Nothing to do with either the topic or the plan of going CAI-SHJ, but anyway....

Don't forget Easy is an LCC with a single class configuration, but it's still quite a lot for the A319.MEA has adopted a very much comfortable configuration for its A321,I think other carriers operating the A321 have definitely more seats.

Canberra, You'll see more Italian carriers than Russian ones. In any one day you can get upto 30 flights from across Italy, from an Egyptair 735 upto to a Volar/Livingston/Eurofly A330 (SSH used to get Alitalia MD-11s until last winter).

Pe@rson, about the CAI-SHJ-CAI route. Well as already discussed you can take Air Arabia or Egyptair. The latter will offer 3x weekly A300-600R flights during the summer (all flights continue to Mumbai). Even though MS will be more expensive than LCC Air Arabia, if you fly with MS on their LHR-CAI-LHR route, you might find it cheaper to also a get a ticket to Sharjah with them (a sort of package).

A6-ABX is with Italian LCC Windjet now as EI-DFO, but I heard Air Arabia would get another ex-Air Malta A320-200 instead.

Thanks Thomas for that info, your input is always much appreciated.

Speaking of Air Malta, why they keep on "trading" A320s and still keep their small fleet of 737s? Eventually, I believe they will have an all Airbus fleet in the future.

Eventually, I believe they will have an all Airbus fleet in the future.

That is the case. They currently operate old A320s and B733s. They ordered the A319 and A320 a couple of years back with the first delivery (an A320) earlier this year. The A319s will replace 733s, which are expected to leave the fleet by spring 2005. And the newer A320s will replace the older models.

p.s. Air Malta have been awarded 5th freedom rights between Larnaca and Cairo and operate a weekly 733 flights.
