With Vietnam, Will UA Restart LAX-HKG?

Tue Apr 27, 2004 9:48 am

Now that UA is inaugurating service to Vietnam via HKG, the flts to HKG will be even more full. As they are, load factors to HKG are so high that there will be little room left over for onward pax. It seems the LAX-HKG flt would help absorb the extra traffic the HKG flts will have.

What do you think? Without the the extra Vietnam service, I wouldn't predict the flt being reinstated, but now that we'll have it, who knows?

UA has no 5th freedoms on this flight... so they'll probably just continue to route their USA originating traffic in from SFO with this.

But with the loads already being so high to HKG, there won't be much space on the flts from SFO and ORD unless some extra US-HKG feed is provided. Even if UA had the 5th freedom rights, space wouldn't be a problem out of HKG because so many pax would deplane there.

UA will be receiving 5th freedom rights to Ho-Town from the Vietnamese government (originally scheduled to receive them Oct 2005 before the intense lobbying).

UA will be able to fly local passengers from HKG-SGN.

I just flew with a LAX Flight Attendant crew (on a 777) and asked them about the rumors floating in that base. They said that they hear more whispers about restarting LAX-AKL more then they hear people chattering about LAX-HKG. You'd be suprised what FA's know! Only time will tell!

LA and Orange County have HUGE Vietnamese populations (definitely enough to make a difference, even with VFR travel), so it could make sense to restart LAX-HKG.

With Vietnam Airlines firing up svc into SFO...this is a perfect opportunity for UAL to jump back into the LAX-HKG market and swoop up the largest Vietnamese community (here in SoCal) outside Vietnam. That's just iceing on the cake. It's totally a no brainer. To compete with VN out of SFO is fighting over a limited market with a 2nd carrier...why bother, when you can have it all!

BN747:

Or maybe VN will reconsider SFO and will head down to LAX instead. Can you imagine Air India, Pakistan and Vietnam Airlines all lined up at Tom Bradley? Now that would be cool!

Dont look for LAX-HKG starting anytime soon. This has been asked repeatedly at staff meetings. From the answers received the route was a big money looser.
While loads were indeed good, the extreme long range of the flight left little room for cargo revenues, plus the overall passenger yield from LAX was quite low especially with UA going head to head with double daily Cathay Pacific flights in addition to all the other one stop options of getting to Hong Kong.

UALAX .. I agree....it's just a matter of time anyway. I actually think that if UA does go SFO-HKG-SGN....VN may very well blow off SFO and go for LAX! (sorry Copa..but that would be UA's fault). But UAL announces SFO...VN's marketing staff will certainly go into defcon 4 and come up with a solution. AA may even encourage them to do so!

Yeah, it could happen I guess, but I dont really think so. Hell, UA could have gone under by that time. It could happen, but again, I dont think it will. VN will start, and chase UA out of the market. Thats my opinion.

whoa....just read in the other UA/Vietnam thread...it will be SFO-HKG.

I can't believe VN is not meeting this very moment to consider the impact! Them against UAL .. out of SFO...that's asking for punishment! I think they'll certainly reconsider LAX after this! Someone's gotta step and tap the LAX-Vietnam market.

BN- I agree. LAX-Vietnam really is untapped, and so is the SFO-Vietnam one, but UA just stuck its paws in it. I am hoping that VN will stay with SFO, and Im betting they will. I have heard VN wants to add LAX as the second US destination after SFO, which would work out well in my opinion.

When is VN coming to SFO? Also where are their flights going to go through?

Thought it's similar to HKG-SFO. Definitely not as far as HKG-ORD.

Wow....not much faith in UAL huh? LOL...

VN stated the commencing of service a few months ago and did name SFO as the 1st US destination..however they did not identify an intermediate stop off point.

However, UA has better yields with the SFO to HKG flight because 1) it operates from a major UA hub (and that means lots of connecting traffic) and 2) there are more premium-class passengers flying this flight.

Is LAX a bigger aviation hub for ALL airlines than SFO?

The reason VN have picked SFO as their first US city because Vietnam Consulate is located in San Francisco.

Where would they park all the plane at LAX? Tom Bradely is too crowded as is and normally if you arrive early on a trans-Pacific flight due to extreme favorable tail wind. you will just sit on the runway and wait, sometimes as long as 2 hours.

VN flew its first 777 to SFO last fall and had a press conference, and named SFO as its first US destination. Also, they opened up a ticket office downtown, and as Saigon said, the Vietnamese consulate is in SF too. So, VN is coming, Id guess either early 2005 or late 2004.

Tell that to Air India, Pakistan Intl and Alitalia..there're coming (or returning) and Bradley has to put 'em some place.

And how do you expect members of the largest Vietnamese community (outside of Vietnam) to get to Vietnam? Fly LAX(or SNA)-SFO-HKG-Vietnam? TWO stops??? UA or VN won't be able to sell that to anyone down here! CX's LAX-HKG-Vietnam connex , CI/BR LAX-TPE-Vietnam connexs are clearly an better/easier sell! VN however can walk right in and virtually own the market..well sort of...I'm sure a lot of Vietnamese locals won't take too kindly to flying the carrier flying the 'red flag'...they'd probably rather give their cash to anyone else. Many of them are still bitter and still hold rallies supporting the yellow flag with red strips in Orange County.

As for a consulate many carriers fly to US cities where they have no consulate. And cities with consulates..have no service at all. Washington has all the Embassies..and LAX has more Intl' carriers than Dulles by far! The determining factor in establishing air service is the ability to garner market share. Diplomacy's nice ..but revenue generating pax is better...

UA would add another SFO-HKG before adding LAX-HKG, they want majority of asian flts out of SFO. on the inbound HKG-LAX about half of the pax headed to SFO on shuttle for their final destination
