Tough day for FedEx... a Fokker 27 landed in flames in Melo, Uruguay this morning I think.

It basically says that the plane departed from the US, touched down in Campinas, Brazil, and was going to Buenos Aires when basically the tail and cockpit caught fire. It asked to land in MVD, but since the plane was near the Brazilian border it was diverted to Melo.

Now, the article doesn't identify the plane as belonging to FedEx, but another newspaper, El Observador does. Plus, Campinas is a FedEx hub.

The pilots are in a local hospital, but they are OK.

I'm glad my FedEx air package wasn't on it!

I'll stick with UPS, thank you very much. Only reason why this package went FedEx was because I wasn't paying for it.

Hi PU151,

Great to hear the pilots are fine!

I remember years ago that near the Brazilian border (near Chui) the route is also an emergency landing strip.

Slightly off-topic, but... You're right Lima, the route just in front of the Sta. Teresa fortress is an emergency landing strip, 3000m long. Although it ain't all that emergency. I've seen a C-130 from the Uruguayan AF use it. That was one COOL day.
