STL/CUN - Who'll Get It?

Wed Apr 28, 2004 8:14 am

We've discussed Frontier's proposed service STL/CUN, but it hasn't been granted yet. F9 has asked for an expedited decision by May 1.

FYI - both Champion Air and USA 3000 have objected to the application, but the City of St. Louis strongly supports F9.

However, for you STL guys, there is this tiny tidbit in one of the covering documents:

Frontier is working with the City of St. Louis "to establish aternative travel options to various domestic and international locations..."

So - assuming Frontier does get the route, which is still an "if" - which other "international destinations" from St.Louis might they be investigating?

It's a PDF document filed with the DOT, but I don't know how to link PDF's (techincally challenged!). The docket number is OST-2004-174173.

Also, FYI, no one else has objected to the other two applicaions, SLC/CUN and MCI/CUN.

cheers

I would have to assume that it is CZM or PVR. CZM is a pretty popular destiation from STL which was also filed for by USA3000 along with 4x weekly CUN. My odds are on F9 getting the route, or at least I hope they do.

I second what LambertMan said. The big problem with Champion and USA 3000 is that those flights are mostly filled by travel agencies doing package deals. They are more or less charters.

F9 has already given the traveler here more options with flights now to LAX. There is a definite love fest between Griggs and F9. I could see them becoming a major player here soon.

I had PVR on my wish list, but I didn't think about CZM.

Would F9 add a destination (CZM) from STL that they don't serve from DEN? Maybe that's the point of the expansion.

As to the domestic routes, F9 has already mentioned the possibility of STL/LGA - butting heads with AMR.

But I guess almost any domestic route from STL would butting heads with AMR.

cheers

On a side note, American Airlines will increase STL-CUN service from Sa service to SaSu service on 12 June.

Yeah, I saw that about 2 weeks ago. I always knew that AA wouldn't keep a heavy route like that at only once a week. It may be in a response to F9, but the route still fills up nicely and yield must not be that terrible for AA to stay on it. If it is in response to F9, it's good to see that they are defending themselves in St. Louis a little.

The CZM idea was basically a wild guess, I kind of figured that since it wasn't served from DEN that could be the purpose of the route. PVR from what I remember was served by MD-80's in the TW days as a seasonal route, maybe we could see that come back as a 1x weekly 319. However, in the end, it wouldn't surprise me to see Griggs coax a few more flights out of this deal. LGA seems to be a very viable cannidate with something like 1350 pax a day with only 5x S80, so as long as F9 doesn't damage the yield that terribly, AA shouldn't be affected all that much. Griggs seems to be willing to grant F9 whatever they please in St. Louis.
