America West To Honor Pat Tillman With 757

Wed Apr 28, 2004 10:28 am

It looks like America West will make the overtures to honor fallen hero Pat Tillman in a way that is very appropriate and will carry his honor for years to come.

Big thumbs up Great Move Cactus! Just don't over do it!, What Pat Tillman did was exceptional, but nearly 700 others paid the same ultimate price. Something simple like a #40 on Arizona Cardinals plane, but please don't capitalize on this situation by putting out a press release!

God Bless America!

I don't recall seeing this guy play play football but I was reading about him and he was a very intelligent man, played in the NFL making millions yet he was humble and passed up better offers to remain with his team, and then passed up more mllions to join the military. Unlike the greedy, plastic hollywood stars, musicians & rappers that seem to be the most popular U.S. exports in other parts of the world, this is someone we could all learn something from. A true hero.

so far the special themed aircraft are:

Arizona
Nevada
Ohio
Phoenix Suns
Arizona Cardinals
Arizona Diamondbacks
Teamwork coast to coast.. or something like that
Pat Tillman coming soon..

Am I missing any? How long will all they be carrying the special schemes? Hopefully for a long time.

Always count on America West to do the right thing. I think it is very appropriate as HP is Tempe-based, and has their largest hub in PHX. Way to go.

If I read the article right, what they're going to do is add his # 40 to this plane, and only after discussions with his family members.

It would just be modifying their current Arizona Cardinals plane.

Hey Guys,
I dont think its a cool idea and here is why:
Pat Tillman was a true war hero BUT not the only one. Besides, he didnt want his Caleb. profile advertise his service for the country. He WNATED to remain low key and perform his duty. Indeed, we all should be thankful for the ultimate price he paid for us all. NOW, I also understand that we live in a free society, and if by any remote chance, AW wants to use this as "patriotic" advertisement, I think it is disrespectful to Patt's wishes.
I really hope that I am getting my point across here and certainly do not mean to offend any of you dear members. Having said that, I'd also like to add that we should all remember the troops and the sacrifices all of those men and women are making, so that we can sit behind our pcs and enjoy this site!

Dicussing it with his family members is right.

I do not think Pat would have wanted this.

Ok make a plane into a scheme commemorating all the fallen young soldiers and personnel that have died over there serving their country and trying to make a better one of Iraq?

I bet the paint will be on for about ~5 years, if HP has luck not driving a baggage cart into it or something!  Smile Or perhaps weather or something else could ruin the paint sooner?

I agree to honor all the soldiers, not just Pat Tillman, although it is a great idea.

And FYI The Sun's plane is no more...now in AWA c/s

I don't want to seem rude but why is he a hero? Why doesn't HP make a 757 honoring all the US servicemen and women?

I don't wanna seem rude here either, however, if you read carefully...we are going to present the idea to the family. There are no plans to add his number to the Cardinals plane as of yet. His family may not approve of it....so don't get too excited yet. To add though, he's a hero just like those that are serving.

Pat Tillman was the kind of guy who didn't want to be singled out, he just wanted to do his duty like any other soldier. I think honoring all the fallen service men and women in Iraq is the best way to honor him.

May they all Rest In Peace.

That was the biggest point about Pat Tillman. He never wanted to be singled out for what he was doing. I think that what he walked away from is what singles him out from other celebs, whether he likes it or not. Like Curt Shilling said in an interview, "I always assumed that someone else would go to battle. So I would never quit baseball and go fight." Then as Pat's friend said in the interview, the reason he did not want to be singled out is because he feels that the men and women on either side of him have sacrificed nothing less than what he has to fight in the war. The family should say no unless all fallen soldiers are remembered.

Besides, I thought the Cardinals' plane was damaged in the hanger a couple of years ago. Didn't the landing gear collapse while it was being worked on?

Went to school at ASU with Pat. He was a great guy.

I feel that putting Pat Tillman's face on the tail like Alaska A/L Does for Charlie McDonald would be classy. I feel they should also do one for Lorie Piestewa and other Arizonians lost in this nasty war.

He's not more of a hero than the other people serving and/or dying. He's more of an icon than they are, however. He could have used his position, job and pay as an excuse to NOT walk away from it all and join the Rangers. He realized that what he had and what he would be leaving was not important compared to a bigger picture. Many of us would be hard pressed to walk away from far LESS than he did and make that decision. He did it anyway...

THAT is why he is an ICON - i.e. a "symbol" of something... the "bigger picture". That is why he is different than some of the others there. If HP et al wants to recognize the man for doing what a lot of us would not do, then it is for the right reasons: to make all of us remember.

I don't think that America West is going to flat out just forget about all of the men and women whom have given their lives in this campaign. Nor do I think that they are saying that Pat gave more of a sacrifice than anyone else out there in the line of fire. HP is the official airline of the Cardinals. The state of Arizona, the Cardinals, and ASU have all lost someone that they had come to know and love. By adding the number 40 to the side of the Cardinals plane, I think that it is just a way to memorialize Pat's sacrifice. This young man put his celebrity life on hold to do what he thought was right.

" If HP et al wants to recognize the man for doing what a lot of us would not do, then it is for the right reasons: to make all of us remember."

And that's exactly what this is. Every time you see that number 40 take to the skies, you think of Pat and his fellow countrymen that gave the ultimate sacrifice. Just something simple to show our support for our bretheren, not plaster his face all over everything (ie like the Hideki Matsui 747).

I wonder if Jet Blue or Delta is going to honor Eli Manning with a airplane for having the courage to stand his ground during the draft. After all his peservence meant that he does not have to play for the lowly Chargers.

StearmanNut,

That's an interesting idea to have Piestewa's face on an HP tail....it actually would look alot like the Alaskan eskimo on AS, which they could potentially have a problem with. Anything to keep Squaw Peak the way it was is a good thing. It's unlikely that Pistawa ever knew the mountain existed since she was from Tuba City. However, it was likely that Pat Tillman hiked Squaw Peak occasionally, therefore it would be more appropriate to name the mountain after Tillman. Putting #40 on N908AW would be a very fitting tribute for his sacrifice.

ConcordeBoy,
I don't think that it is insulting one bit. The military is like a family, and we care for our brothers and sisters. I have various members of my family that are currently active in the Army, Marines, and Navy. Nobody likes the loss of life that has occured in both Iraq and Afghanistan-whether it is the loss of an American soldier or an innocent bystander caught in a cross fire from insurgents. My father retired from the army a couple of years back, but can count 6 people thus far that he knows that have lost their lives in Iraq and it hurts him deeply inside knowing that not only those 6, but the countless others have given their lives in this war. Pat is not being put above anyone else in terms of his sacrifice. The media has kind of turned this into a "feed your face" type ordeal. Pat was a recognized figure in the state of Arizona, as well as the rest of the United States. By offering to memorialize him, HP is showing that as a corporation they support their countrymen. It's not all about Pat Tillman in any facet. Maybe along with the #40 they should insert "We Support Our Troops" as well just to drive this message home. Recently, your posts have been pretty tasteless by way of socialist ideals (God forbid anyone wants to do something in the memory of Pat Tillman and not the group as a whole). I don't want to see Tillman become a victim of media hype any more than you do, but by god man, painting the #40 on the side of an airplane isn't going to hurt anyone. You should just be proud knowing that people care. The least that we can do on the home front is to let our brave men and women out there know that we do love and care about them.

This is a very nice gesture, I think some of you have missed the point. While we all support our troops and pray they return to us soon, he was a different kind of person. Most people enter the military to help defend our freedom, earn money for college, have no other choices in life, want to get out from under ma and pa's roof, there are many reasons one enters the military, he gave up millions, fame, job security, all to serve our country. He is a different kind of story, not many have the chance to play football at his level, he chose the military. I do think that HP should dedicate a paint scheme for ALL active troops and those who have fallen, but so should all the rest of the US carriers. This is a nice gesture on HP's part.

B727fan:

I don't know if you read the entire article or not from the link posted, but I feel it is VERY well worded by HP. I think it's a GREAT idea to ask the family if that's what they would want done. Remember, if they say no, then it won't happen. For everyone in here saying "No, he didn't want that!" blah blah blah....Why not let his family decide? His wife, parents, etc.? They, after all, speak for him in a matter of speaking. If THEY think he WOULD NOT want this, then they will say no. And if they say yes, then I think it's our job to accept it, and not say how wrong it is. HP is acknowlaging the fact that Pat Tillman is NOT the only soldier to have died in the middle east, nor will he be the last. HP is NOT trying to be dis-tasteful in this issue, and I think it shows in how they worded the article. So, I find that everyone in here bashing HP's decision to wait, then ask the family needs to just cool off, and let them take care of it. It's up to the family, and that's how it should be.

Just me 2 cents.
