Whats Up With These LH Seats?

I remember seeing on "Airport" that these seats are able to convert from coach to business or something like that, but how do they work and feel. Are they comfy, why don't other airlines use this?

Seats on the left look like they could be two or three and that the middle seat has a small tray table. How do these seats work?

The seats on the left side are the ones that are converted - I think that either the middle or the two sides are folded down to create a wider armrest, but I'm not sure... it's been a while since I've seen them "in action".

The tray table, by the way, for that middle seat is not smaller than other tables, it's just folded on the left and right side as well (so you don't only fold it down, but also to the sides): that way it fit's the small space and still has the normal size.

As to other airlines, I think a few other airlines actually do use those (or similar) seats, but in the case of LH those seats are on their way out: they'll just leave the middle seat free in C-class. I think they decided against these seats because the mechanism adds too much weight to the plane.

I think the "Airport" episode you were referring to actually showed the seats in action with Icelandair (unless there was another that I missed). Having just flown Icelandair, I have to say that I was wondering why the middle seat only had half a tray table. Then a couple of days later that episode was shown and my question was answered - I didn't even know that those types of seats existed!

I flew Business Class once (a rare treat for me) with Lufthansa. I went to my designated seat to find it was three abreast. It turned out that the cabin had not been properly configured, and we had to stand up again while a slightly flustered/embarrased cabin crew moved the dividing curtain back, and collapsed the three abreast seats into two abreast. I couldn't work out how this worked, as took mere seconds to convert each row of affected seats.

This scheme Lufthansa has, is on EI flights too. Very comfortable, i like it.
