US Airways To Pull Out Dubois, PA

Wed Apr 28, 2004 1:25 pm

Unless they can get EAS subsidies, US Airways Express carrier Mesa will end service to Dubois, Pennsylvania on 22 July 2004.

US Airways Express operates a total of four daily flights to Dubois on weekends to Pittsburgh. Three non-stop and one with a stop in Johnston, NY.

Hardly a major loss, I've always wondered how US has been able to fly to so many small cities across PA. DUJ not a very big place. You're about an 1:15 from SCE/UNV and about 2 hours or so from PIT.

Just because Air Midwest is leaving the market, don't assume that US Airways Express is leaving the market.

For instance, Shuttle America announced a few months ago that it was discontinuing service to HGR. Allegheny ended up picking up the HGR flying.

I would not at all be surprised to see Colgan, for example, pick up the DUJ route.

I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

More likely, thats a stop in Johnstown, PA, between Dubois and Pittsburgh. If they are really flying to New York state first, it's no wonder US is on the hot seat. Being from State College, it's too bad to see my "home town" carrier making cutbacks.

I have clients with offices in DUJ. They fly to PIT and drive since tariff to DUJ is so high. Could that be why loads are so low?

Sorry, I did not mean Johnstown. I meant Jamestown. One of the flights stops in Jamestown on the way to Pitttsburgh. Yes, it does go out of the way, but that's the schedule:

US 4747 PIT 2020-2110 JHW 2120-2155 DUJ
US 4749 DUJ 0650-0725 JHW 0737-0830 PIT

Here is a map of the route:
http://gc.kls2.com/cgi-bin/gc?PATH=PIT-JHW-DUJ%2C+PIT-DUJ%0D%0A&RANGE=&PATH-COLOR=red&PATH-UNITS=mi&SPEED-GROUND=&SPEED-UNITS=kts&MARKER=1&RANGE-STYLE=best&RANGE-COLOR=navy&MAP-STYLE=

The base of the triangle is PIT-DUJ; the hypotenuse is PIT-JHW and the leg is JHW-PUJ.

DUJ is a MTC base for Air Midwest. If they close up shop in DUJ where will the MTC base go?. My best guess would be RDG would get the MTC base due to the fact that MESA has a huge hangar there that can hold as many as 8 1900's at once plus it has Regional Aircraft Services in it, which does tire and metal work for the 1900's.

Back in the 70's when I was living in Williamsport--at the other end of I-80 from DuBois--and doing graduate research at Pitt, I use to drive the 500 miles back-and-forth from campus in one day. But that was before Pittsburgh got gridlock traffic. So some nice person in Clearfield County is going to have to underwrite this route or make their own Cessna available to local business people.  Smile

We get a ton of customers from up in Clearfield and Jefferson County just because DUJ is so tiny. With 4 flights a day to PIT, plus fares are through the roof of there. They drive to PIT, or State College where they can choose from USAirways Express, Northwest Airlink, Comair, and United Express and have a wider variety of destinations. While it is kind of a raw deal, these EAS routes are complete money losers. And its not like DUJ is isolated, its right on I-80.

Although there is a sweet restaurant up in DUJ where we fly up to for dinner with my flight instructor or private license friends that has a good wings deal on Saturday nights.

USAirways Express is not pulling out of DUJ. After asking around about this I found this out. They filed the paperwork so the government will provide more EAS money for the flights. It was basically a deal to get the government to look at the situation and support it with more money. The only risk that is there is that they (Air Midwest/US Express) may be underbid by someone else, such as Colgan (also a USE carrier), but as we were told, that is highly unlikely. DUJ is 84 miles from PIT so it does qualify as a EAS city.

Air Midwest also announced today that they will be pulling out of Latrobe. They currently fly 4 daily flights LBE-PIT.

While it's certainly possible that LBE will retain service with another US Airways Express carrier, I think it's unlikely.

Dubois with EAS service, now that's a joke. And Latrobe with any airline service is another. I grew up in the spot of land almost exactly halfway between those two towns, so I might just know the situation. People in the east are quite spoiled really. My goodness, a 3 hour drive to an airport?

As a couple of others have mentioned, Mesa is not pulling out of Du Bois. Unfortunately, the law on EAS states that a carrier has to file to terminate service to trigger a route case for EAS subsidy. It's real messy when a carrier really has no intention of leaving, since the appearance is that they are leaving. Now that they have filed the notice, they have to stay in for 90 days. If the DOT does not act, Mesa is free to go. Likely DOT will put out an RFP in the next few weeks. Mesa controls close to 25% of the EAS routes in the continental US today. This is pretty standard for Mesa. I would be surprised if someone puts in a better bid, but you never know. My guess is with Mesa's assets in Du Bois, that Mesa will bid much lower than someone else's true operating cost. Latrobe is not EAS, so service can end there at any time.

The determination on Du Bois is a minimum of 2 flights per day nonstop to Pittsburgh with a minimum of 62 roundtrip seats per day.

I think the government needs to stop funding these small communities, as they are a burden on the taxpayers. What's the big deal to drive 1 hour to the airport. If the service is desired by the local communities then let them pay for it themselves, not people 1000 miles away just so they can "have airline service" there. If the local market supports the service fine, but when the taxpayers are having to pay to keep service in a community then it don't really deserve any service.
