Possiblity Of A 7E7 Documentary

Thu Apr 29, 2004 6:49 am

I was wondering if anyone knew if Boeing will or has allowed for a documentary to be made about the production of the 7E7. I remember there was a 3 or 4 part story on the production of the 777 that was on PBS years ago. I forgot how far it back it went in the production, but I remember seeing the laying down of the first wing (then the stress test, which is cool). It also showed the engine testing, using the 747 prototype, and the contraption used for training pilots on taxing the aircraft. But I forgot if there was film on the negotiations or all the pre-production stuff. It would be awesome to see the process of the 7E7 being built.

It would also be cool to see a documentary on the A380 production...Anyone know if that is happening?

PBS also did a great JSF documentry... basically showing the program from day-1 all the way until Down-Select. I sure hope they do another one for the 7E7, but it will be 2009 at the earliest before we can see it!

Yes, I hope they do.

21st Century Jet (the program you talk of) was bloody brilliant. I have the odd episode on vhs somewhere. I really wish I could get the whole series on DVD or video - in the UK, but you can't.

Anyone know if they will make a similar program, or even Airbus doing one on the A380 (could be titled: Building the Super Jumbo or something like that)

you would think they would do one on the A380 as it is the biggest in the world, whereas the 7E7 is just an efficient twinjet. whoop-de-doo

Going to get a bit OT with this but...

In one of the episodes of 21st Century Jet that I have, they are talking about cost cutting, and one of the suggestions where that employees start flying coach rather than First/Business - I found this supprising, that they are not using some type of Corporate Jet (BBJ if it was around then, I can't remember).

Also, with them flying on airlines, what if Boeing's top brass ended up on an Airbus - wouldn't that be a difficult situation for them? Just how do Boeing employees fly on business?

I saw one episode on 21'st centuary jet when they had just nicked an order off Airbus or something like that. That smug little git Mullaly had a grin the size of Seattle on his face and they where all chirping on about how great they were. It really put me off Boeing but i guess they're all like that at Airbus too.

Wierd Roberta, that documentary (I did watch all 5 episodes) made me a huge fan of Boeing. I almost felt like a member of the B777 team after watching the series.

Roberta, I'd be surprised if the BBC, widely known for brilliant documentaries, doesn't have something planned for the A380, perhaps in association with a French or German broadcast company. On the other hand, the 7E7, with its' unprecented 50% composite structure and new-gen fuel efficient engines would also make a worthy subject, particularly given the new way Boeing has planned for the production process (meaning outsourcing). The story angle could focus on it as something of a turnaround/comeback airplane, thus enhancing drama. With the A380, it would naturally be focussed on it being the biggest passenger plane, no other story angle is really needed there.  Big grin

I'd like to see both in HD! I don't care who makes them!

Hard to believe that someone won't make a doco on the 7E7 and the A380. 21st Century Jet was fascinating. Best bit was the Maximum Energy Braking tests on a fully laden aircraft. Watching the wheels glowing as the brakes were white hot - what a sight!

BA757

We fly on whatever airline is cheapest (within reason) and whatever airplane is scheduled. On domestic flights it is no first or biz class, strictly coach. On overseas we fly biz class. I have balked at a couple of flights and had them reschedule them and paid the extra cost myself for the "upgrade". The execs fly commercial also. Some of the big execs may fly the corporate jet, but that's why they get the big bucks.
There may be other groups that do it differently, but that is how most of the groups on the commercial side of Boeing do it.

I am sure that we will see something on the Wings Channel, in about 2009.

midnightMike-
Yeah if a docu is made not only will Discovery Wings show it in 2009 (or earlier for the A380), but it will still be on there in 2025. And on every 3-4 hours too. I like Wings, but it gets so frustrating sometimes when I see the same show multiple times a month.

I think that a 7e7 documentary. I remember seeing the 777 documentary. It really cemented my love for planes. A documentary I look forward for it when they decide to re do the 737 on with a blank sheet of paper. That would be a great documentary.

I am sure BBC will do a wonderful piece on the Airbus A380.

PBS no longer sells it. I have seen DVD's at aviation trade shows but their just copys of the tapes. I could make you a copy of the 5 tape series on VHS but it would be NTSC and not PAL. If you can get around that let me know.

That bugs me too, due to the fact that thay don't show all the epesoids of WINGS. I have a bunch on tape from when I was a kid that I have never seen on Dicovery Wings. Like F-111, A-5, XB-70, B-52, F-16, and most of the "Centery Jets"

And like you if I see one more epesoid of RED WINGS or WINGS of the LUF I'll puke. I know of epesiods of M*A*S*H* that have seen less airtime than some of Discovery Wing's shows.

Roberta,
A new A/C should be exciting despite anybodies feelings of loyalty to A or B! The 7E7 is also going to have different and new technology that you won't see implimented on the A380. It will be interesting to see and experience!

Yes Roberta, I'm quite sure good old Noel gets smug look on his face when they win an order as well.

I'm sure somebody is already doing a documentary on the A380 project. Good PR, that's to be sure, especially now that the plane is starting to come together.

I believe it won't be long before a documentary team is doing a 7E7 development documentary.
