Will LH Add 737NG To Its Fleet?

Thu Apr 29, 2004 10:57 pm

Does anyone have information about whether LH will add 737NGs to its fleet, maybe to replace the current 737-300s or -500s?

No speculation please, just facts if you have one, thanks...

LH currently is looking what to do with the 70/90 seater market (I hope they still opt for the 728, as it feels like a "real" plane inside). Depending on the potential of the model (again, the 728 can be easily brought to 110-125 seats), we might see an order by the 2007-2009.

No, they have clearly chosen for the Airbus narrowbody family. The reason they still bought 737s till the mid 1990s was because the A-319 wasn't available yet then. So you'll not see any 737NG in Lufthansa colors. They slowly withdraw a handful of 737 (classics) every year while no narrowbody Airbus has been ordered or delivered since december 2000, but they have a bit overcapacity in the 100-200 seats range. In the next 15 years or so the 737classics will be replaced by a mix of A-320 family and CRJs or a new regional 100 seater.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

Onnononon is what your looking for.

pronounced On-non-o-non

its latin for "Lufthansa are unlikely to purchase any of the 737NG as they have currently built up a large fleet of Airbus A32X aircraft. The 737 are part of the fleet as they were the only option avaliable at the time of purchase and are yet to be phased out"

It's funny how members that have been here for two months get such a big head and the cockiness just flows...

Anyways, I don't forsee a 737NG order other than for special charter,VIP services such as with 737BBJ...other than that...their Airbus fleet of A321-A319's suits them very well. I agree that they should remain focused on the 70-90 market a/c as their fleet seems simplified enough and their cities served are rightly served by the correct aircraft. Great airline LH and great aircraft 737!! long live both of them.

its funny how members who have been on here 3 years have no sense of humour and cant recognise a light hearted joke when they see one. Maybe i should just leave this site now, for my own welfare.

LH will NOT buy any of the 737-600/700/800/900 models. Not when LH was one of the earliest customers for the A320 Family planes.

LH will not buy new Boeing airplanes in our lifetime. It seeems strange that people would continue to raise the prospect when LH themselves have said the same. In Seattle last year their Fleet Manager actually admitted this to the public. No sidesticks, no Airbus, no buy. Simple as that.

But then again there are still persistent rumors about LH being interested in a stretched/modernized B747 variant.
In addition to that, the 7e7 seems to be the ideal plane to fill the gap that the A310 has left and the A300 will leave in LH´s fleet.
I don´t think that we will see LH operating an all Airbus fleet within the next few centuries.

9V-SPF, I absolutely agree with you - and LH officials have said numerous times that they were not interested in becoming a one-manufacturer-airline, because they were interested in keeping good relations to both.

i definitely second daniels and franks thoughts. i'd be surprised if LH would not take on the 7E7 in the next years. if Boeing sticks to its promises, than the 7E7 will be match the economics of LH's large A340 hands down (-300s, that is).
besides, on one of this week's atwonline.com's news bulletins, Boeing states that they consider LH as a possible launch customer and are heavily pursuing the airline.

LH has gone with the Airbus A319/A320/A321 series. These days, the airlines of the world are finding that a simple fleet is easier to work with and often can save a few cents on maintenance. LH getting 737NGs when they have already got this far in with the A320 series is rather unlikely.

Just my 2 cents

While for smaller airlines it makes quite a difference whether they operate 15 737s and 15 A320s -or- 30 planes of one type, for an airline like LH the difference between 80 737s plus 80 A320 and 160 A320s is marginal. Plus 737s are CFM powered and they have lots of CFMs anyway they're maintaining (not only in their own fleet)
