Boeing Paints Air Berlin 737 In 7E7 Colours

Fri Apr 30, 2004 4:39 pm

Boeing and Air Berlin have applied the innovative paint design of the Boeing 7E7 Dreamliner to a new Air Berlin 737. That airplane will be unveiled to Boeing employees on Monday, May 3, in Seattle.

Is that because the 7E7 is just an elongated 737?

Why in the hell would they do that?

The only thing I can think of as a reason for Boeing to paint an aircraft in the "7E7" colors, would be if they became the new Boeing House Colors and thats only on a new aircraft like the 777-200LR or 737-900ER (If it's made).

It's parked at BFI, I saw it on the way to work. Unfortunatly it's parked so I only could see the tail. It has the Air Berlin titles on a blue tail - that's pretty much all I could see.

Slightly beside topic: I though that 737s didn't have the eyebrow-windows anymore?

Back on topic: hmm... doesn't really knock me off my seat... but looks ok.

...and why does Air Berlin get factory-fresh B737-700s? I thought they only have B737-700s leased from Hamburg International?

The Press release:

Boeing [NYSE: BA] today unveiled in Seattle an Air Berlin Next-Generation 737-700 carrying the dynamic blue and white livery previously shown only on the all-new Boeing 7E7. This 737 will anchor marketing activities involving Boeing and Air Berlin, details of which will be provided at the July Farnborough Air Show, and allow Boeing to showcase the technologically advanced Next-Generation 737 in an exciting way. Boeing painters used innovative painting techniques from the automotive industry to create the unique color scheme. Air Berlin takes delivery of the 737 later this month.

I think it looks great. Hopefully Boeing will secure more 7E7 orders at the Farnborough show this year. I aslo hope that Embraer secures more 170 orders at the show.

Yeah, I don't get it either. What is the point?
It is a nice livery (on the 7E7) and I have nothing against Air Berlin, but why put them together?
Is this sort of like JAS "stealing" the Airbus house livery and using it for their own?

It's such a better livery than the current one. They should keep this 7E7 look, it's beautiful! (it looks actually even better than on the 7E7 itself!)

I don´t know if anybody has the same feeling, but I can´t help thinking that Air Berlin might go longhaul and announce a B7E7 order shortly.

They are already Germany´s #2 carrier and might want to go head-on with LH/DE/LT on longhaul-leisure destinations. AB is just now building up a very good feeder network through their CityShuttle operations.

I would be delighted....

Just my 2 cents. Any other thoughts???

I don't know if I would go that far. But if Boeing approached me, offical armchair CEO of Air Whatever, I wouldn't turn down some free PR. Then again, the 7E7 is a very attractive aircraft for an LCC.

Awesome!

When will it arrive in Germany? Why gets AB new 737-700? - information needed. Maybe they consider to buy the 7E7 - they had a profit of
170.000.000€ in 2003. Thus they will have the money to buy the dreamliner... And they haven't any widebodies yet.

Greg is most likely right that it is a promotional for the ILA

I see from the press photo that Boeing is still using the "wet ramp at night" effect to make the shot more dramatic. For those that don't know the story, this is a Boeing trademark from when the XB-52 was rolled out back in 1952.

The XB-52 was rolled out of Boeing's Plant Two one night in 1952. The factory is separated from Boeing Field by a road, East Marginal Way. Normal procedure was to stop traffic in the wee hours of the morning and tow the completed aircraft across the road to the airport on the other side. There is a famous picture taken of the event showing the XB-52 covered with a tarp (due to the top-secret nature of the new bomber) with the ground wet from a recent rain shower.

The resulting picture had such dramatic impact that ever since then Boeing has tried to recreate the same shot for publicity purposes going as far as wetting the ground with hoses if there is no rain forecast. I suspect this is the case in the Air Berlin picture.

That picture must have been taken Sunday night, and if so is then the ramp is 'artificially' wet. The weather has been nice for a week or so ...

That ramp does appear artificially wet...but I think it's a good idea. It adds quite a bit to the photo. It's more interesting than if the ramp were just a solid dark surface...I like the effect of the relections! Big grin

Boeing has found a good technique, I imagine it could get old after a while though...one of their press photos of the 717 has the same type of night/wet-ramp shot, and always with the darkened windows.

Spike, if Boeing saw you calling the 7E7 - "just a longer 737" I'd think they cry!  Smile Not only because the 7E7 is likely to decide the survival of the company going forward, hit or miss can be very fateful.

Besides the 7E7 is more of the same size as the 767 anyway, so I'd say that if it is a longer anything it would be the 767 in that case  Big grin

First of all, AB is getting some 73G because the 738 has proven to be too big for many city shuttle destinations. The type also allows more flexibility when it comes to serving smaller leisure destinations, which might not warrant a 184-seat B738.

Secondly, I don't see this as a symbol for an upcoming AB order of the 7E7, but rather as a nice promotional tool for Boeing in the upcoming fight with Airbus for an impending order of Air Berlin for up to 120 aircraft replacing the current AB 737 fleet.

For those of you asking "What's the point?" I can only say:

- Branding
- Marketing
- Advertising
- Hype
- Press attention
- A thread on A.net

Air Berlin, even if they do not buy the 7E7, have gotten their name in the paper for free.
