Bookings From Eastern Europe To UK Up By 20%

Sat May 01, 2004 12:00 am

With the expansion of the EU tomorrow (01/01/04) BA, Czech Airlines, LOT and other airlines operating on UK-East European routes are reporting an increase of 20% in bookings for flights over the next few weeks as many East European nationals 'migrate' to Britain.

On a slightly unrelated topic, UK charter airlines are seeing a 'huge increase in demand' [Evening Standard] over the next week for holidays to Cyprus, Turkey and Egypt due to the bank holiday weekend.

First:

Warm Welcome Estonia, Lettland, Lithuania (Litauen), Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Cyprus, Malta and last but not least Hungary to the European Union !

Second,
might be due to the facts that some people get a job in GB (I think GB and Irleland are the two countries which offers from the first day free living and working to all the new ten members ...) but also one reason might be that
they don't need any visas etc. after midnight and that they simply LIKE TO SEE the EU they joined at midnight  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Kind Regards, Jutta.

Some of it is blown out of proportion by the media, but this Eastern European influx was expected anyway. Not only that, tourism from Britain to East European destinations has been increasing in the last few years.

Cannot be the case as there hasn't been any visa requirement for close to 10 years (I think Estonians can travel without visa already since 1997, most likely Czechs and Hungarians even longer times)

Jumbolino: "free living and working"???

Maybe just that only UK, Ireland and Sweden did not put the new EU members into a position of a 2nd class citizens, with Austria and Germany introducing absurd 7-year temporary measure banning free movement of workforce.

Visa? Are you kidding me? None since 1990...

Slightly off-topic, but why would Slovenia be admitted in this new group but not Croatia?

2 Stretch:

Slovenia is sort of class of its own within the former eastern bloc countries. They have by far the highest GDP per capita (close to Portugal), very decent economy (they had the most valuable industry in former Yugoslavia), great tourism potential... They were smart and lucky enough to pull out of the falling-apart Yugoslavia. Lucky because there was no Serb minority settled in Slovenia and smart to keep the weapons of the former Yugoslav army home-guard so they managed to defeat Serbs within a week or so in 1991. And Serbs left Slovenia alone after that since they did not have any significant territorial or ethnic interests there.
Croatia unfortunately has been too much involved, affected and damaged by the decade of cruel ethnic wars. Without the war Croatia would be a member of NATO and EU by now, I'm pretty sure about that.

Slovenia is a wealthier country per capita than Greece.

Typical Media hype, of course bookings are up... fares have fallen, and capacity has increased. However - the vast vast majority of passengers between the UK and Central Europe (not eastern europe) come from the UK. On a typical easyJet PRG flight, you would be lucky to find more than a handful of Czech people.
You are 100 times more likely to catch a cold on a flight than an average person!

And on an EZY flight from NCL-PRG you would be lucky to find a handful of people sober  Wink/being sarcastic

It's becoming more and more popular by the Brits to come to Prague just for a day or two on EasyJet, Jet2 or some last minute deals by CSA, get totally trashed Nuts with Czech beer and then fly back. "Tourists" from hell  Acting devilish Acting devilish Acting devilish doing really good job in driving other, decent tourists, away.

Those are the same "tourists" which spend a weekend in Dublin using cheap Ryanair tickets from the UK, welcome to the EU.

According to Slovenian media sources, the vast majority of bookings (about 80%) on EasyJet's STN-LJU service have been made by British tourists, as was the intention of the consortium that pushed for the new service. Some complain that EasyJet's passengers will not spend as much as other tourists, but most observers believe this is a big boost for the country's rapidly growing tourist industry.

(BTW, L410Turbolet answered Stretch 8's question really well, but for a discussion on the enlargment, as well as details about Croatia's future membership, there is a thread open on the Non-Aviation Forum. Please post any questions over there as I'm afraid some mods may delete them here:

Eastern Euorpe is very very popular with the British nowadays. Just look through any sunday papers's travel section and you will see. I read some of the right wing newspapers over the weekend, it was disgusting. There were comments like "Tommorow the Slovak gypsies arrive" and there were interviews with so called 'gypsies' who claimed to be packing for their new life in Britain.
Even the BBC is guilty of a bit of stirring, they sent a reporter to Bratislava airport a few weeks ago. He was talking about gypsies migrating whilst standing under a Sky Euorpe sign advertising flights to London for 30Euro.
Can you imagine if newspapers talked about 'blacks' migrating to the UK, they would be closed down, but they are allowed to slag off gypsies.
I really hope that the planes were full this weekend, with people taking the opportunity to visit our neighbours and get to experience some of the rich cultures and great cities of these new members.

I recomend to anyone to go and visit: Ljubljana (been 5 times it's great), Vilnius, Bratislava, Budapest, Prague and although not in the EU, go to Sofia, Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik. In fact take the opportunity to so wherever you can.

EASYJET and RYANAIR should be given awards, they have done more for allowing the people of Europe to get to know each other than almost anyting else.

I wonder how true this is. I spent last weekend in Ljubljana and having spent only GBP 30 on the easyJet flight I ended up staying in a more expensive hotel and spending more money in the city then I would have otherwise. The mini-break was also a great 'taster' of Slovenia ... I will be back!

Now that is good advice! Also, I must agree about Ljubljana, it is great!
Sit back, relax and enjoy your flight with us today.

Oh, I agree with you wholeheartedly. The flights are great news for Slovenia and will introduce many Britons, especially young ones, to the country. It seems to me that the comments I talked about often originate with those in the tourist industry who fear change.

Glad you enjoyed your visit... How about a first-ever trip report for this service? We'd love to read about your experience!
