Asian Carriers With Western Uniforms For Females

Sat May 01, 2004 2:20 am

I just saw that Garuda have them besides the Sarong, never knew they did, other than that all of the North and South East Asian carriers have them, what about Vietnam, Lao and Cambodia Airlines? all of the Muslim Middle East and Central Asian carriers have them.

Those that dont have western uniforms are, Singapore Airlines(surprising), Malaysia Airlines, Royal Brunei, Biman, Indian Airlines(crew objected to it and idea was dropped), Air India(surprising), Sri Lankan(surprising), Royal Nepal, PIA, Ariana, Saudi Arabian Airlines and Iran Air, the latter two used to.

For people in the west a point to be noted all muslim airlines from the "fanatic" Middle East region have western skirt uniforms, that they're worn by women from other countries is besides the point, as many are Muslims from conservative countries including Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan, as mentioned above Saudi Arabian and Iran Air also had some of the most fashionable ones, SV had them till late 80's of what I know, their summer uniform in 1985 was a half sleeved style in shades of bright pink with skirt just 1 inch below the knee, with a dark pink beret worn on the head, no chiffon scarf or anyother thing to cover up with.

I'm not sure but think Vietnam Airlines also sport their national dress, loose trousers and a long flowing shirt just above the ankles.

SV Uniform

Sun May 02, 2004 12:05 am

Forgot to mention the Saudia unifrom skirts were figure hugging like on other airlines and not loose frumpy frock styles.

Lao Airlines (former Lao Aviation) has Lao style uniforms. Vietnam Airlines the same.

I wonder why it is surprising to you, that SriLankan Airlines, Singapore Airlines etc. don't have western style uniforms.

Japan Airlines and All Nippon have something like western style, for sure not Japanese style uniforms.

SQ Uniform

Sun May 02, 2004 12:54 am

OK maybe not UL or AI (were to get western uniforms designed by some French guy, what happened?) but SQ could definitely do with a western style along with the Sarong, like TG, GA and PR have, they should also update the Saron Kebaya change colours or something, its been there since the 70's if I'm not mistaken and is begining to look shabby and dated, no offense to anyone.

The best Sarong Unifroms are Thai's they have such a large variety of colours.

SQ's kebayas are in blue, green, red and brown. With colour being assigned according to rank, the most junior being the famous blue. SQ used to hv its crew don western uniforms on ground and only the kebaya when airborne but dropped it as unnecessary cost plus the kebaya is SQ's best marketing ad.

JL used to have 1 flight attendant in the kimono serving customers in First class but that had to have been in the 70s and early 80's only. KE as well had 1 in a hanbok but Im not sure if they still do. The VN ao dai is maroon and quite elegant looking but I don't like the apron they have to wear when serving. As for SQ...why change a good thing? Pierre Balmain designed the sarong kebayas and I bet even he didn't know how recognized they would become worldwide.

Why should an Asian carrier have "western" uniforms??? Part of the branding of Asian carriers should be that they are different! SQ aint LH but just happens to be headquartered in Singapore. And not everything "western" (looking) is better / best ...

SQ452,
The "ao dai" is a traditional Vietnamese dress, NOT a traditional Lao dress. The flight attendants on Lao Aviation wear traditional lao style sarongs (there was a article - with photos - about the inflight crews for Lao recently in one of the airline enthusiast magazines).

ANA, JAL, Asiana, and Cathay Pacific all have western style flight attendant uniforms. Thai Airways and Singapore also have western style uniforms for their flight attendants (for Thai domestic lights and usually on the midway point for transpac flights on SQ).

I think it all depends on what type of market the airline is trying to attract. Singapore, Thai, Malaysian and the like mostly have foreign tourists/ businesspeople travelling on them, therefore it would be good to have an Asian style uniform. However, 70% of JAL and ANA's traffic is Japanese, and they already know what the kimono looks like, and the Japanese are very precise people, they don't want their stuff be altered just so it could be worn on the aircraft, therefore it would be logical for JL and NH to have western style uniforms. I know this is only a very general statement but it is true in the examples given above.

However, that said, I have to say I prefer "national-dress" uniforms much more than a "shirt+jacket" type western uniform.

Japan did at one time have one F/A in kimono, however, I would think that would be very difficult to work in. With air travel today, service has to be fast which dictates a functional yet fashionable uniform. Food spills, turbulance, and passengers all add to the cleaning costs of uni's, so "kiss." (Keep it simple, stupid!)

SQ does not currently have any western uniform for its female cabin crew, not since the 80s i believe.

China Airlines flight crews sometimes stay at the Radisson-President in Richmond, BC -- across the Fraser River from the YVR south runway. When I was checking out in January, a CI crew was checking in. The FA's were wearing bright pink pencil skirt - bolero jacket outfits made of natural fiber with matching hats and black leather pumps. I remember thinking "The shoes don't match the outfits." But in mid-winter, I guess pink shoes are out of season.  Smile

SQ452
I think the Vietnamese is called bao-dai or something like this and the Lao one would be a (Lao) Sarong.
cheers

Interesting, SQ's female office staff in Pakistan wear a local dress of plain dark blue "shalwar kameez" and a chiffon scarf with print and colours from the sarong kebaya.
