Airlines You'd Like To See At CVG

Sat May 01, 2004 7:13 am

Considering CVG is dull for diversity of airlines (more than 95% of that airport is DL I heard), what airline(s) would you most like to see pop up there and the routes they would fly for them

I'd like to see a BA 777 from LHR 4 times a week,

otherwise (and this is a real long shot), SQ from NRT and SIN 5 times a week.

I don't think so about BA is not flying to CVG either. Those some of other airlines was used to CVG with AF & SN. I can tell you something about Sabena Airlines is no longer use into CVG for last before 9/11.

Regards!

CVG's a manufactured hub/gateway.

It's got low O&D, and DL's dominance has been able to crush just about any upstart that that airline doesnt condone.

Would be nice to see KE or AM there, someday.

Agreed, but I think it has just barely above 2 million local enplanements per year which seems to be the lo-co magic threshold. Add to that the passengers you might suck back from Columbus and Dayton and there might be a decent passenger base. You'd still have to fend off Delta. It's a stretch but it's a lot more likely then a lo-co at MEM or CLT.

I would think ATA/Chicago Express would be able to do semi-decently out of CVG. They should be able to run a couple of Saabs daily upto MDW to connect into that hub there. The Saabs seem like the perfect plane; it can perform pretty well on a stage length of CVG-MDW, and you would only have 100 daily seats (if you do three daily flights) leaving CVG daily...with Chicago being a pretty decent business destination, you probably could get some traffic. The lone problem is that you already have three airlines flying Cincinnati-Chicago (DL, AA, UA)...what are your thoughts on this idea? If any LCC were to crack CVG, my guess would be TZ...

I honestly think that if SQ did fly to CVG from NRT and SIN, that they could do very very well if they code-shared it with Delta.

CVG is an easy/friendly airport to connect in and would be simple for international flights. If Delta got the word out to use CVG (they did an ad campaign on TV back in the mid 90's, CVG instead of ATL), Comair and East coast areas could feed a considerable amount of people in for such a flight.

The demand to Asia from Cincinnati must be there because a couple years back when China/U.S. opened up bids for 10 new slots to China by a U.S. carrier, Delta planned a daily JFK Beijing flight with the remaining three for Cincinnati-Beijing service. Of course, Delta didn't win, and the slots went to United and Polar Cargo  Sad

One reason CVG is so low O&D is b/c they jack up ticket prices. Last year there were 4 of us that were going to LAX. The Direct flight from CVG to LAX was about 800 per person. To Drive to CMH, fly comair back to CVG and Take the same flight ran 250 per person. With 4 people thats a savings of $2200. On the way back from LAX, we didn't check bags and got off in CVG instead of taking the last leg back to CMH. CVG would have much higher O&D if everyone in the area flew out direct, instead of having to go to DAY, CMH, SDF, IND.
Now, back to the original topic, I would like to see KLM take over the CVG-AMS route. Also, with all the traffic from Toyota, Mitsubishi, P&G etc in the CVG Metro area, I would like to see a flight to AA), Japan">NRT, on anyone but DL, which will probably be a few years off.
Air Canada Served CVG with a CRJ for a bit, but acording to their route map, this flight has been dropped. UAL dropped the CVG IAD service. AA has the Miami service that started a few months back, that is heavly suppored by P&G traffic to S.America. So for any carriers currently there, don't expect any new service to any cities.
Other Airlines,
TZ, No, they serve DAY and IND already. LEX has been dropped according to the Route Map on ATA, so i doubt CVG would be picked up.
WN, No. 1 with their presnce in SDF, CMH, and IND, they already pull enough traffic away from CVG. 2. I don't think SWA could find that many destinations to serve and fill up a 737, and 3. DL will do whatever it takes to keep them out or kick them out.
FL, No. Though i would love nothing more to see FL run a CVG-ATL shuttle just to piss in DL's tea, I don't think this would happen. BWI probably woudn't have strong enough numbers, and DL would just get rid of them.
AS, No. Most would probably be connecting to upper Northwest into smaller cities, and DL would sent them though SLC and Drive AS back out.
HP. Would like to see them do CVG-AS / KLAS), USA - Nevada">LAS, but again don't think they have the guts or money to go up against DL, in CVG.
IMO F9 would have the best shot, and they seem to like to try to stri up stuff. They are really starting to expand right now into Carriers hubs IE LAX-MSP, PHL, MCI, and STL. Also, UAL has no DEN-CVG Service. I would expect to see possibly a Horizon CR7 try a run at it. I'm sure they would be run out as well, but they have the best shot of making it in CVG.

Speaking of WN, the municipal airport in Cincinnati (KLUK - Lunken Field, or "sunken lunken" as we know it by in the city) has been trying to land an airline to LUK for ages. Everyone says no primarily because the faciltiies are just not there at the moment, and the runway of 6,500 ft. + is long enough for WN, but they've been talking for a while of extending it.

The demand for business traffic is there. Comair could CRJ it to LGA, MDW, IAD in the morning and evening, WN could come in and if B6 ever came they could even land there.

Plus, its a 10 minute drive into the city from the airport.

I'd die a happy man if an airline ever served LUK  Big thumbs up

It's a stretch but it's a lot more likely then a lo-co at MEM or CLT.

Actually CLT has higher O&D than CVG and already has one LCC, ATA. CLT & CVG are both known for having extremely high fares. The last list I saw CLT was the most expensive and CVG was the 3rd most expensive. Also, I don't know if America West is still considered an LCC, but America West Express and AirTran fly to Memphis. There's also a rumor that America West may start flying to CLT.

CLT - 11,324 average passengers/day
CVG - 9,205 avg. p/d
MEM - 7,498 avg. p/d

Call me crazy, but I think AirTran could make it. They seem to be the airline that can make any city work. Newport News-LaGuardia, Moline-Atlanta, and now Moline-Las Vegas. They can take a city with very low O&D traffic and make into something - I'm sure they can take a city with fair O&D traffic and be successful. I'm sure CVG-ATL would be an absolute blood bath, but AirTran has a good following in ATL. Same with BWI. Also, AirTran has a very low cost structure, so that's just going to help them even more when it comes to battling it out with DL.

I don't think that B6 can make it in CVG until the 190's come in. They could probably run 2x JFK, but that's it.

Oh I know how about Comair, o' wait that's their hub. Never mind I take it back!!!  Nuts

I wouldn't mind seeing anything that is not scheduled into CVG. I'm not picky!!
