BA Or KLM To Helsinki?

Sat May 01, 2004 7:41 am

Evening all (yawn hehe, its late!),

I shall be going to Helsinki from 1st June to 4th of June and have been exploring my flight options. I can either go from LHR-AMS-HEL-AMS-LHR with KLM or LHR-HEL-LHR with BA.

I will be 15 at the time of travel and I do have a couple of concerns with transferring in AMS. I'm probably getting worried about nothing, but say i took KLM and got off my plane from LHR and all my baggage was checked through and i had my onward boarding pass, surely there is a clear sign to like "connecting passengers" or something? If not, someone needs to let me know  Smile I'm not going on the KLM UM service either, i was 13 and stuck in a 7-9yr olds playgroup kinda thing last time!

Flight options. Well, BA are direct on the 320 both ways (am trying to avoid the baby buses!). KLM would most probably be a 739/734/734/738. The prices are about £138 for BA and 150 for KLM, so it doesn't make too much difference.

In the past I've been very pleased with BA's service, the meals are very good and the leather seats they have on the 320s should be more comfy than KLM's product. However, KLM i'd get on 4 flights compared to BA's 2.

What should i do?

Many thanks,

Henry

Henry, for me the choice is obvious.

BA fly direct & the price is cheap. Why on earth do you want to pay more and connect in AMS? The service will in all likelihood will be the same...

Go for KL and the 739, a very rare aircraft type (that is what I would do).

Hi henry,

but if you wish to kill time and have a good look at AMS then why not go for KLM?
also, you may go for other airlines like LH or something via AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA and MUC? these 2 airports are very nice.

What about SAS?

Why not book BA and fly one of the Finnair codeshares in one direction. Try us both!

Also a nice idea, I didn't think about that.

Henry,

Don't worry about AMS, all signs are in English, and I guess it's one of the easiest airports in the world for transfers. Impossible to get lost there. Whatever you choose, have a nice flight!

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all your advice, anymore?

The reason why i'd take KLM is to get 4 rides instead of 2, and 2 years ago when i went to HEL i went from BHX and connected in AMS with KLM. Despite not having much time there or seeing anything at all really, it was just a really nice airport.

On the other hand, Britair had a very good suggestion  Smile. I might even try that, thanks!

SAS wont let me attempt a booking for some reason, and LH.....hmm. Just been on their site and they offer flights with SK for about £210....a bit much to be honest  Sad

Any other ideas?

Cheers,

Henry

I'd pay the extra and fly KL, because:

1) I'd fly more;
2) I'd get to see AMS again - it's a brilliant airport with many, many opportunities for spotting; and
3) I'd fly the 739.

All this for a mere 12 pounds more?  Big grin

Agree, go for KLM,

If you enjoy flying, especially take offs and landing, then go for a stop over, usually not a lot more expensive and sometimes even cheaper.

Don't agree with your A320/B737 choice but KLM is a good choice because,

  • AMS has a lot of traffic to look at and is, with it's one terminal concept, quite easy to get around.

  • We don't have too many B739's in this part of the world, go get it.

  • Chances of being seated next to a nice Dutch girl is far bigger on KLM than BA Big grin

  • Enjoy

    Hi Henry,

AMS is very good airport so you shouldn't have any problems there. It is very well designed for transfer traffic allowing smooth and convenient transfers for passengers. Also an excellent airport for planespotting!  Smile

The flights are complicated question... KL 737-900 is really an interesting option and like some wrote before those birds are quite rare. 737-800 is mediocre in KL configuration, but 737-400 are not good at all. KLM's 737-400s are very basic, a bit shabby inside and legroom isn't good either (if compared to other major airlines). If you are lucky AMS-HEL might be operated by -800 too, but most likely it is -400...

Service on KLM flights is friendly and F/As are helpful, BUT their service concept isn't good. On 3 hour AMS-HEL flight you'll get only a tiny sandwich and some soft drinks + coffee/tea and that is below the standards in my opinion. No newspapers on board either...

Finnair + British Airways combination is very interesting as both operate very clean, modern and comfortable Airbusses and at least Finnair has nice LCD drop screens in the cabin, one of the best legrooms in Europe and camera views to outside. Not sure does BA has the same....? Anyway, both offer very good service on board so these are high class products. Finnair also just improved their catering and will offer after 5th May hot meals on board... I believe BA has some concept.

Choosing is difficult from these options but I would take BA or BA/AY combination instead of KL... B737-900 is nice, but 3hrs on B737-400 is definitely not.

Despite whatever you will decide, have a nice flights and great time here in Finland!  Smile

    Best Regards,

I would stay clear of the B739 and go with BA or Finn...

    Hi All,

Haha thanks. Pera, i looked on Ryanair's site, about 200 quid to go with them! Dont think so somehow! I also need to ask my parents if im allowed to just go via HEL, as i'll be 15 and travelling alone. When i went alone in 2002, the 737s were ok actually, but since then i've grown a bit lol  Sad

You're not airliners.net worthy if you avoid a 737-900  Smile

You can fly a320's and other types all the time..

Fly BA because even though you will fly a 739 and have great spotting ops at AMS, it would be easy just to take the direct or a Finnair code share agreement with BA so you will experience two airlines with one ticket.

Yes, I couldn't agree with you more Airbus3801.... ........NOT..!!

BA777: and speaking with the words of Airbus3801 , when the next time comes you can fly to anywhere, please take the direct route, because it's easy and you have great adventures, don't let boredom overtake you  Smile

np offense Airbus3801, but when you have the chance to take a special plane like the A380 one day, but you have to travel that extra mile, wouldn't you...?

The 739 is rare, that's true, but isn't it just a longer 738?  Laugh out loud

Kl911, I totally agree, I myself had the opportunity to travel once on a 757-300 and it's not that much more special other then the rarity..

but continiuing on that base, then why on earth be an airline/airplane enthusiast..?
