Delta Question.

I was just looking at some MD-88 pics on the site and
began to wonder, what does the different registration
letters mean? Such as, ship # 930DA , #910DE ,
#920DL. I have made up these numbers, but you get the idea, Why do airplanes in Delta's fleet have different
ending letters. I have thought it might be to differentiate those airplanes owned and others that are
leased but wasnt sure. Be good to here your thoughts.
