"Airport" Show -Miami- On Discovery Wings

Sat May 01, 2004 10:59 am

I'm not sure if anyone noticed, but I turned on the Discovery Wings channel this evening to find they are showing "Airport"... what really caught my attention is the fact that the episodes this evening are not the usual Heathrow filmings, when in fact they're covering Miami International Airport.

Just thought I'd give you all a heads up if you're interested. Also, living in Miami, it's interesting to see this program addressing so many of the issues that we've read about in the newspaper or on television... such as ramp agents stealing from luggage, etc.

Im glad they are making a US version of the show (esp. in Miami!) I liked the Heathrow version but having never been to heathrow, I wasnt as interested. Now I can understand the people too. No offense to any british out there but some of the people on the Heathrow show had very strong british accents.

As anyone might know, the Airport Marathon is on today and it is mixed with Miami and Heathrow episodes. Just finished the one with the crooked baggage agent. I think the LHR series shows a bit more of the airport instead of just police operations outside the airport. But Miami has some good flight stories as well.

This is a stupid episode! Who cares about the Press Tour surrounding Jack-rabbits on the airfield?

I was a little disapointed with the Miami episodes. The LHR show was great, lots of stories of actual airport workers, mixed in with some good customs and customer stories. This one made it look like the US carriers didn't want to do anything on camera with the producers.

However, I would watch the Airport series at LHR anyday over the "Airline" crap A&E has on. But I would bet there's a US show in the works somewhere after the success of Airline.

The Miami shows are really really old, I remember watching them on BBC ages ago.

No offense to any british out there but some of the people on the Heathrow show had very strong british accents.

mmmm, I wonder why?

I think he means provincial accents, in which case yes, even I don't always understand what a Glaswegian or a person from Belfast is saying to me! But that's one of the fascinating things about the people of the British Isles...

I don't know why he's making such a big deal about the accents. I live in Florida and can't understand most people in Miami.... even the ones who speak English (which isn't very many of them).

Watched the Airport Miami shows last night....Still way better than "Airline", but this seemed more like an episode of "Cops". IMHO, too much time spent on the drug busts & luggage theives, and of course, the rabbits!!

Wouldn't it be great to see an "airport" show that showed us more about airline & airport ops? Or ATC?

I know...I'm dreaming!! But it's a nice thought!!

Regards,

Mike

I stumbled accross this last night as well. I have to admit, I find it far more interesting that "Airline". I think those who want to see "behind the scenes" airline work need a combination program. IMHO, Airport shows quite a bit of "behind the scenes" information concerning the travelling public.

The shows were great. Anyday better than "Airline". The Heathrow shows are so much more fun to watch than the Miami shows. I really wasn't interested in drug stings outside the airport or water patrols around Miami.

The Heathrow shows are more concerning airport operations which is much more interesting and definitely a must-watch.

cheers

Seems to me the problem with the Miami show was more a question of what the producers were allowed to access and film. Just seeing how the airport authority public relations folks behaved about the rabbits with news reporters is a clue as to their level of cooperation with the media.

The show was awful...I watched one episode where there was a AA A300 that blew a tire on takeoff and was coming around for an emrgency. So they show a 777 on approach to 27 (27L then), a 757 touching down and then finally show everyone deplaning an A300...what?!?!

These two Miami episodes were really boring. There were so many unnecessary shots of jackrabbits and too much about things that were happening outside of the airport. The poster who mentioned that this was too much like an episode of "Cops" hit the nail on the head. I ended up fastforwarding my TiVO through a good portion of both episodes. The only good part was the drama surrounding the Air Jamaica passengers and CSA's. The emergency landing would have been interesting if they had shown real shots of the aircraft coming in instead of stock footage of a 777 and 757. It seemed like a real poorly put-together special series.
