Your Pick @ Best US AIRPORT(s)

Sat May 01, 2004 9:46 pm

Hi all;
This may be an old question, but I would like to get an answer. In your opinion, which is the best US airport?
It will have to meet the following criteria:

1- Modern, pax friendly (meaning easy checki-in, baggage claim, non-confusing concourse and directions to facilities, food and shopping choices)

2- Wide range of carriers, both domestic and international

last but certainly not least

3- Offers a great view

p.s. feel free to add any number of other things that may come to mind

My picks so far that would meet all of the above would be: BWI, ORD (AA or DL ramps, opposite to the Int'l. Terminal), EWR (parts of terminal C, CO, and terminal B)

I have to agree with BWI for most all of the critirea.
PHX has to be one of the least confusing concourse layouts.

BWI!!!! ????

No way, security there is a hassle and the satelite parking might as well be in downtown DC. It's certainly not a bad airport but it is no picnic for those of us in the DC area who have to use it.

Well, DTW doesn't have a lot of international carriers, BA, LH, and Royal Jordanian, but NW sure can put on a great show.

We get almost every type of A/C. 727, 737, 747, 757, & 777, Lots of Airbus movements, and plenty of interesting Cargo ships now and then.

The NW Worldgateway is great, and when the new terminal to replace the Davey/Smith/Berry complex is built (one of these days) it will be one of the greatest most modern airport in the world.

Oh, and let's not forget the NW DC-9s!!! What a sight to see them lined up at the NW Terminal.

Right now things are a little messy in T-1 with all of the construction going on, but other than that the airport seemed to be pretty decent to me. Once they get the construction projects done, T-1 will be a little less cluttered feeling. It is pretty easier getting to the councourses as well, since the security lines are separated by concourse, and once you get past security, the tram station is right past security. I admit that the concourse themselves may overwhelm some by the sheer length of them, but with there being moving sidewalks on the concourses to lessen the walk, it isn't as bad (I really like the announcements they have on the moving sidewalks, pretty clever!). As for amenities, they have the usual standard airport amenities, but with a uniquely Vegas twist, slot machines and video poker inside the concourses (I did pretty well there while waiting for my flight a few weeks back, put in $25, cashed out with $77, all in about 5 minutes).

As for carriers, they have quite a range of airlines operating into McCarran. A huge majority of US scheduled carriers flies into LAS, as well as a number of US charter airlines. Quite a few International carriers fly into LAS as well, as Las Vegas is one of the most popular destinations for international travelers.

The views are pretty good as well; with Las Vegas being in a valley, there are mountains surrounding the area, plus you have the casinos to look at as well, quite a unique mix of architecture to say the least. You really get to enjoy that view if you happen to have the right seat assignment either coming into or out of LAS. I hear coming in at night is a really great view as well.

I'd have to agree that EWR has a great layout and nice facilities (especially in Terminal C with Westfield managing the stores). They also have a great variety of international airlines (and some carriers that don't go to JFK such as Ethopian). We'll even have SQ's A345 to SIN soon!

HNL gets my vote.
Several domestic airlines, several international airlines.
plenty of space, open feel. I just love HNL

Ooo, good call on HNL. I second that!

I'm also going to say MCO. Lots of carriers with a variety of aircraft types, plus the stores, characters, and even the little train to the main terminal all prepare you for the theme parks you're about to experience (although I bet the locals probably get a little tired of all that.)

Sorry, but I'm also going to have to veto BWI. I don't care how much cheaper it is, it's not worth the hassle. It takes longer to drive there than it does to fly from there to PIT, CVG, etc.

Totally being biased as I was there yesterday, LAX! It surely offers some pretty nice scenery, the choice of airlines is unbeatable, the airport looks so nice with all the pathwalks, grassy knolls, palm trees, warm weather, ugh it makes me hate Minnesota!!
