Hey Jacob,

thanks for posting the link. I look forward to seeing ATA go through with these orders. I fear that they might replace the Tristars which are a common sight here at BWI!

Why would they talk to ALPA? Wouldn't an official company spokesman be more appropriate? I mean, let's face it: Someone talking to ALPA at Eastern in the late '80s would have heard an entirely different story as someone talking to management.

They would have to speak with ALPA to discuss what the pay rates would be on the 717 or EMB-190, sounds kind of funny but that is the way it works, also there could be a change in crew duty rules.

"We would prefer Boeing, but we understand we need to get the best bang for the buck," said Erik Engdahl, local chairman of the Air Line Pilots Association.

----------------------------------------------------------------

To me that speaks a lot, that they really do want the Boeing, but Boeing has to come through with a very good deal, one that could save the 717 for the short-term, and if they can do that, I'm sure it'll be a pretty sweet deal for ATA.

Pure rumor is about to follow so be foreworned

ATA has been hosting meetings for ATA Pilots only and some rumors have come out of there. From the several pilots that I have talked with Boeing is pretty much a shoe-in for the order. They said that mainly they are concidering Embraer only as a possible ploy against Boeing to get a good deal on the aircraft. ATA is a very loyal customer to Boeing and we haven't had a single problem with any of our aircraft. This doesn't mean that Embraer may be out of the picture, just that they may have to fight an uphill battle for the order should they want to persue ATA.

In all honesty i believe that Boeing will win out over Embraer. But as stated before nothing in this industry is a given and you shouldn't believe anything until you see an official press release for the company.

To me that says its a union man advertising their feelings and not the official stance of the company.

It is looking like the 717 may get another small boost. Any boost is a good boost. It just goes to show that the economy is slowly but surely getting a little bit better.

how many 717s are we talking about? Will this possibly make it a profitable airplane for Boeing?

40-60 new 717's will prolong the lifespan of the aircraft, but I think more orders would be needed to keep the line up and running for the long term. Hopefully when and if ATA orders the planes, it will convince some other airlines to possibly give the bird a shot.

I'm more excited by the "ATA is the largest carrier at Chicago's Midway Airport and said in February that it may launch flights to Europe by the summer of 2005."!!!

ATA is doing well lately. I'm very happy for them.

I don't want to get my hopes up but the seattle times is usually pretty reliable when it comes to reporting boeing matters. This is great news.

I prefer to see them with embraer 190-, nothing against boeing, I just love the look of that aircraft... they should buy 30b, and 30e...to have everyone happy...

Flights to Europe? I need the 411 on that one. I think the 757-300 could make it from MDW AND MDW has a customs facility! If FI and CO can cross the pond on 757s TZ can do it as well.

JRan225 - No worries on the TriStars until 2006 except N188AT and N194AT which will be retired this year and next. The others will be around until 2006 at least.

Not only the largest carrier out of Midway and Indianapolis, but the 3rd most passengers out of Chicago.

Can't wait for the scheduled Euro service either. I am thinking it will connect from the east coast and not non-stop out of MDW.

If the European flight leave from MDW it will be a 1 stop flight. I'm almost positive that the company will launch the flights from the east coast. No decision has been made on when /if/and from where the flights will be launched.

From the several pilots that I have talked with Boeing is pretty much a shoe-in for the order.

Boeing was a shoe in for Frontier order...and easy jet....and jet blue orignally....and America West....and Airtran
and they only got airtran
Remember after the easy jet order Boeing said they will not make jets for a loss.....so hopefully they are able to get it together for this order and keep these planes coming out of the USA  Smile

I disagree, Geg2rap- Boeing was NOT a shoe-in for AirTran. Airbus considered it a must-win order, according to everyone involved, and several of us were surprised (though pleased) that AirTran went with 737s. Airbus had offered some sort of deal to replace the 717s, if I remember right.

That said, I will not believe that they are ordering 717s until a press release is issued. I hope they do. But stranger things have happened.

As far as Europe goes...there was an article in AW&ST a while ago that stated specifically MDW and IND will not see any European or South American flights. One stops...maybe...but they are going to base the service out of other cities.

MDW will need a serious runway extention before we'll see any longhauls from there. If ATA are going to fly to Europe, we will need to establish a focus city or minihub somewhere East ... we need some feeding to be able to make that ops profitable.

Apparently ATA is playing games to get the best deal and yet keep their Pilots happy. The 717 is a well proven and quickly available a/c while the E-190 is relativly new.
As to scheduled service to Europe, why not out of MDW? I suspect though some of the big boys that ops in O'Hare may object. ATA has plenty of 757's with the reach, they can use the L-1011's they have left for peak times or can go into the used market and find some nice 757's or maybe 767's for that service. (If correct, 757-767 have similar flight decks, so little change for pilots?). With their extensive charter experience, should be no problem as to qualified pilots (maybe the L-1011 pilots can be retrained on 757's-767's?)

The 757-300 can barely fit into MDW right now. Take the accident last year with one A/C crashing through the blast fence. MDW will not see international service to/from MDW (direct). It may see a 1 stop flight but that is the only way it gets International. ATA is looking for high yeilding cities that do not have many flights to europe. Some city on the east coast is going to see in increased presense from ATA before any international flights being. We've got to be very carefull with this course of action. Any rushing into this and we may pull an America West, and possibly run into the end of ATA. If this is done very carefully and with alot of though this venture has the potiental of being a great success for ATA.
