762 Vrs 763 On Long Haul

It seems most long haul (around 4000-5000nm's) 767 flights are operated by 763's, like AA's and UA's. What airlines regularly operate 762's on long haul?

Also how do 762's fair on long haul routes economically, does their fuel consumption per seat begin to suffer?

CO flies the 762 long haul. As for economics, If there are not enough passengers to fill a 763, then a 762 is your best bet.

I can tell you for sure that CO uses the 762 for it's long haul flights to Europe from EWR and possibly from IAH to AMS every once and a while.
Also EL AL uses the 762 from TLV-YYZ-LAX.

I believe the 767-200 ERs CO operates have the same if not better range than 767-300ERs, El Al was flying 767-200ERs nonstop from ORD to Tel Aviv.

CO also flies 762s from EWR and IAH to GRU. Other 762 long-haul operators include US Airways (many transatlantic routes), Malev (BUD-JFK/YYZ) and Britannia (Florida, etc.).

Theoretically a 762ER will have more range than a 763ER equipped with the same engines, since the wing is the same but the fuselage is shorter and therefore lighter. However not all 762ERs have the more powerful engines.

AC used to, and I think still do, use 762s alongside 763s on many long haul routes---although they have more 763s now than before--many 762s across the Atlantic from YYZ and Western canada

AM has one 763ER and 4 762ER's. The 200's are used for the MEX-GRU, MEX-MAD and MEX-CDG flights and the 300 is used mainly for the MEX-SCL flight (it is occasionally used for the flights to the other destinations, but it is not common). The reason for this is that the 200's have slightly more range and, therefore, have less trouble getting to Europe with a full load of cargo and pax than the 300, especially during the summer season. Due to the fact that AM's loads to Europe are [close to] 100% during the summer and very, very good too all year long, I am sure that AM would have gotten only 763ER's if MEX were closer to the sea level since altitude would not be then a factor restricting the range of the planes; unfortunately, MEX is, at more than 7,000 ft. above the sea level, very high and therefore it is better to use the 200's to Europe to prevent potential range-related problems. AM is getting more 767ER's until it can afford to get newer and bigger planes (the 772ER is rumored); the first of those will be a 300ER, so that all flights to SCL and GRU are done with 300's and the rest will likely be 200ER's, in order to increase frequencies to Europe.

Almost exactly the same case with Avianca. Their loads on the BOG-MAD-BOG run are usually pretty good, but the 762 has less trouble making it's way over the pond with full payload and taking off from a 8300ft high airport (that's BOG).

The other 762s on the fleet are used from BOG to EZE, SCL, LIM and once in a while to MEX.

The 763 are used normaly in the BOG-JFK-BOG route.

Range of basic aircraft with JT9Ds 5855km (3160nm), medium range version with CF6s 7135km (3850nm). 767-200ER - Speeds same. Range with PW4056s 12,269km (6625nm), with CF6s 12,352km (6670nm).


767-300
Higher gross weight version range with design payload and PW-4050s 7835km (4230nm), with CF6-80C2B2s 7890km (4260nm).
767-300ER - Range with design payload with PW-4060s 10,880km (5875nm), with CF6-80C2B4Fs 10,195km (5505nm).
