Am Emergency Landing

Mon May 03, 2004 7:11 am

Anybody out there knows the reason for AM's 767-3Q8 XA-APB performing an emergency landing yesterday, May 1 on Lisbon ?

Thanks.

Hi, there was not an emergency landing. It was just a refueling stop due to bad weather in MAD.

Glad to know it was just a fuel stop! If AM had 777s a refuelling stop due to heavy X and nose winds wouldn't be necessary!

Just like our Portuguese friends had an unexpected visitor a few days ago, I wish we would see one day (even if it is only for refueling or as a result of a diversion) a TP widebody land in MEX. Maybe the Mexican national soccer team should invite the Portuguese national soccer team for a game in the Estadio Azteca. Perhaps Figo & friends would be brought by a chartered TP.

EddieDude,

Keep wishing, I don't think that will happen anytime soon. They fly nowhere near Mexico, I think not even to LAX. But I agree with you I love their livery. MAybe a charter?

TAP does flies to Mexico. They fly frequent charters to CUN! Also recently LOT has been spotted at CUN!

TAESA flew charters into LIS and once had a 737 based in LIS. Ignore the route! Any Portuguese member knows some more of TAESA's charters with 757/767/DC10s?

I doubt it was headwinds on an eastbound flight! It was because of weather at Madrid that caused the diversion.

Hola Eduardo!!

If TAP was really clever, and if they had enough fleet to do it, of course, they should fly regularly non-stop LIS-MEX-LIS (they have A340s). We all know that there is a big need for another European carrier in MEX, and TAP would be perfect now that we now AZ can't do it. LIS is perfectly located for European, Middle East and African connections to/from MEX. Actually they already offer very interesting fares from MAD to Brazil and New York, as well as Johannesburg. They have a very extensive European network, and if they offer competitive rates to and from Mexico, they could compete with IB, AF, LH, KL and BA in the Europe-Mexico market. Also, as they are so good located in the Iberian peninsula and they serve several destinations in Spain from LIS, they are perfect to serve the busy Mexico-Spain market, that as we discussed in other forums, desperately needs more carriers.

In Latin America they already serve Caracas, and several destinations in Brazil, so thinking that you will see a TP in MEX doesn't sound too crazy to me.
I wish you could see a TP 340 every afternoon at MEX parked near the rest of European heavies!!!!

Saludos.

Hey there Víctor, how are ya?

I sure agree that we need more seats between Mexico and Europe. About TP coming our way, I don't know. But baby steps. Maybe they could start by doing some charters to MEX (since they already send charter flights to CUN) in order to evaluate demand just like AR385 suggests. I find it difficult to believe that a European airline would rather fly to CCS than to MEX. I don't mean to infuriate our Venezuelan friends, but I think MEX is a way more attractive destination for European airlines than CCS, especially now that Mexico has a Free Trade Agreement with the European Union and our economy is stable and Venezuela is such a chaotic place. Does anybody know if there is a Portuguese colony in Venezuela? I wouldn't think so... Brazil being just next to Venezuela. Or a lot of Portuguese investment? Again, I wouldn't think so.

EddieDude and others

I read somewhere that there is a big portuguese colony in Venezuela, just like a Spanish colony exists in Mexico. So, its basically ethnic traffic. Ghost77 corrected me, they already fly charters to CUN. They could make it a scheduled 3 x weekly and extend the CUN stopover to MEX. A few years ago, Portugal started investing a lot on Direct Investment, but, naturally, most of it went to Brasil. I don't think there is any Portuguese investment in MEX. Another place with a big colony of Portuguese people is Montreal. What about something like IB did years ago, Lisbon-Montreal-MEX? I think that with a good timing for connecting flights in Lisbon, flying TAP to Europe could become very attractive. Plus, Portugal in itself is a great place to visit.

Yes, Portuguese direct investment in Mexico and in Spanish-speaking Latin America is very limited. I think there are probably only a couple of truly large Portuguese companies with more or less significant operations in Mexico and not much more. At the firm we represent a Portuguese bank that has a representative office in Mexico City, but it is not very active.

I do hope, however, that we will see more European airlines doing regularly scheduled flights to MEX in the short term. If not TP, hopefully JK, UX, SK, LX or AZ.

Several important European airlines are distant from having operations to Mexico. Why? Difficult to answer. TAP from my point of view does no have a market in Mexico other than the Portuguese coming for vacations. And I have not hear too many Mexicans interested on visiting Portugal. Also, Lisbon does not seem to be a great European hub. Language is not a plus. And I do not know if the TAP European route system is any good at all for Mexican travelers.

I would say AZ, and SK would do even better in Mexico than TAP.

I know there is not so much traffic between Portugal and Mexico, but there is not too much traffic bewteen Mexico and the Netherlands either, and KLM flies daily nonstop 744 AMS-MEX, cause like 80% of that traffic is connecting traffic. So would be the case of TP in MEX: mostly connecting traffic.

Anthsaun,

Connections ex-LIS are very interesting for the Mexican market, since TP, IB and Portugalia fly to several Spanish cities from there, and TP flies to main European cities like LON, AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA, PAR, MXP, ROM, BER, VIE, ARN, AMS, BRU, so if they offer competitive fares to those destinations, it could be a great option.
Actually I think it would be much more logical to see them in MEX than SK, where can you connect in ARN or CPH to? Moscow? Helsinki? There is really no traffic from Mexico for SK.

Ill agree with Wolkenridder...SAS? If your telling me that a Latin person would rather fly with a totally non-Latin airline instead of one that might resemble one, then the world is changing for the wierder.

JMO, of course!

What do you mean by that? Why AZ can't fly to MEX?

There's a large Portuguese community in Venezuela. A substantial number of Portuguese immigrants are from northern Portugal and from the island of Madeira, which accounts for the weekly Porto-Caracas and Funchal-Caracas flights. The Spanish, Italian and Portuguese communities in Venezuela retain close links with their respective home countries (most of these immigrants arrived in the 1950's/1960's) and are significant players in the national economy (such as it is).

Apart from that, a lot of the pax on TAP's LIS-CCS flights are connecting from all over Europe, so theoretically TP could generate enough connecting traffic to make a LIS-MEX flight feasible.

Pzurita1,

In other forums it has been discussed that AZ cannot operate flights to MEX due to bad financial situation and lack of fleet. I will try to find a link for you.  Big grin

Thanks for the info on the Portuguese community in Venezuela Ussherd. The data you provide is very interesting.

Wolkenridder is correct about AZ. I recall reading not one but several posts about how MEX is not in the cards for AZ in the short or medium term. The biggest issue is the lack of sufficient planes (772ER's would be, I guess the way to go). AZ just announced weeks ago its plans to fly to new destinations basically in North America and Asia beginning this summer, and MEX is not one of them. I guess we will see AM doing regularly scheduled flights to MXP or FCO before we see AZ doing MXP-MEX.

Pzurita and Wolenridder

Fortunately, AZ situation has been solved. But I already lost my hope with AZ and AM. Looks like they'll never start the route. Perhaps, AM in one or two years with T7.
