Northwest New Paint Scheme

Wed May 05, 2004 6:30 am

Anyone have an idea as to how many of NWA's planes have been painted in the new livery? ie. 25 DC9's, 10 757's etc....

My latest count shows the following (including new deliveries):

A319 - 17
A320 - 18
A333 - 7
B742 - 3
B744 - 4
B752 - 27
B753 - 7
DC9 - 33
DC10 - 2

I anticipate this count is short by about 5 aircraft, but these are the only ones I'm able to confirm.

I know we've talked about it before, but I'll bring it up again...is this NWA livery an improvement? I really didn't think the last one was great, but it was better than this one! I wish they had something with a white base.

EAL757,

In marketing, the point is to have your product stand out a little rather than look like the rest of the pack. It's more "Did you remember the colors" than "Did you like the colors."

Northwest has that down pat. And most find the new color scheme as striking, in its own way, as the old bowling shoe color scheme. Few are neutral about it, but everyone remembers seeing it.

I just paid five dollars just so I could have my say about Northwest's new paint scheme. Let me first premise this by saying that I have never been a big fan of NWA. I have always thought that their image was rather unsophisticated and loathed the fact that they had removed inflight entertainment from their inflight offerings. Compared to the big three, I have long felt that their standards were inferior. Having said that, I think that their new corporate identity, from a design standpoint, is very cutting edge. It is contemporary and very high tech looking. I was hoping United's new livery would have been as cutting edge as NWA's. United's is a huge disappointment but I will save that for another message board topic. My only complaint about NWA's new look is that they did not retain the very ingenious NW logo that doubles as an arrow pointing to the northwest corner of the globe. That was absolutely brilliant. It should've been retained. Of course, I tend to go against the grain when it comes to airline color schemes because I think BA's world color scheme was one of the most brilliant ever. They were flying works of art. Unfortunately the powers that be at BA crumbled under the masses' mediocre sense of style and design.
United's B747-400. "She's a a cruel lover."

As much as I agree, Northwest Airlines now wants to be known as "nwa" so the compass would be meaningless.

Welcome to a.net, BTW...

The Northwest Compass was retained, they just took out the N.

I like the livery.

It evolved. The old logo doubled as an N, W and compass arrow. That was with the new logo.

I actually find the "old" c/s to be more sophisticated (it looks like an elaborate ship) but like the new one as well.
