Ground Staff: A Pain To Handle Certain Airlines?

Wed May 05, 2004 11:39 pm

Hi,

The other day, I was at NCE arriving in late evening from LTN.

I have found out that a plane supposed to land at 23:00 was 3 hour delayed.

I imagine that it is quite a pain for the staff who has to wait...

I was wondering if some airlines are not a pain to handle as they are frequently delayed, send an airliner instead of an other...

Do you guys have anything to tell about this?

YES!! Some airlines are a pain to handle.
When I first started working at the airport I worked at Gatwick for Gatwick Handling, later to become Aviance.
And yes I have fond memories of Garuda,Air Transat,(Excalibur!) IF any one remembers them! Air OPS or oops as we called them!
For the most part they were always delayed and never really looked after passengers when there was a problem.
And when the chips were down we as the Handling agent had to deal with 400+ annoyed punters about the delay.
In the latter years we also Had the Caledonian contract who on average during the Summer had average delays of 5 hours plus!
And yes if my shift finished at 2300 and the last flight was delayed!! Guess who had to stay!!
Iam pleased to say I work for Cathay Pacific at Heathrow and although we have our problems.. Its nice to work for an airline and not an Agent!
Thanks
Justin

To Handle Ghana Airways is the worst as the responsible people never show up when the flight is delayed for up to 6 days and the passengers are yelling at the Handling Agents Counter! Believe me GH can be a pain in the a**!

Dealing with charter airline passengers is usually worse than dealing with scheduled airline passengers. The scheduled pax are usually more regular travellers and so expect delays every now and again so usually don't get as heated, but charter passengers are usually "white trash" who hardly ever fly and when their flight is delayed start screaming and shouting and demanding compensation and saying that they are going to sue etc etc........ They are also totally unreasonable and there is nothing you can so or say to calm them down so sometimes you just have to walk away and leave them to rant.

It's also difficult as a handling agent, as you are not actually the airline's own staff, you cannot do anything for the passengers unless the airline authorises it first so alot of time is spent waiting for someone from the airline to make a decision.

I'm sure that AviancegirlUK can give you soem horror stories about Biman !!!.

Friends at Swissport hate working Air Algérie flights, mostly because of the huge amount of baggage the pax try to smuggle on board in order not to pay xbag charges... and the AH rep apparently doesn't help as he's somewhat keen on accepting bribes....

After watching Airline UK on Monday night, looks like EasyJet would fit into that catagory. I mean even with the president of the company aboard they still had problems. But that goes to show the the nature of the airline business.
