MSP Tram Up After Almost Two Years In Delays

Thu May 06, 2004 5:00 am

It's about time. The C Concourse tram opened this morning, a month shy of being two years late. Any MSP employees been on it yet?

Where does it go? Is it an actual tracked tran like the new Detriot "People Mover"?

M404,

It's an outside tram that makes three stops along the long Concourse C. Not nearly as slick or even close to what DTW has.

Well, it's open... for now. How long will it be before there's some type of major malfunction that closes it for another 30 days? Odds are... not too long.

Anyone want to set up a "malfunction pool"?

I think that the main problem with that tram was it was an indoor tram (Like DTW) that they tried to turn into an outdoor tram like TPA or MCO ( I can't remember which one has the tram). I think that it was the same company that designed both trams for MSP and DTW. I am going to be flying into MSP tomorrow and hopefully will get to try it out. My luck, it will be broken already.

I would get in on that pool. $20 says its broke by the end of next week for at least a full day!

Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing! It's a bonus if you can fly the plane again!!

Wingnut,
Both Orlando and Tampa have trams. Tampa has that those 6 (7?) outlying satelites that it uses and Orlando has the currently 3 terminals that it uses. All are connected with trams.

In addition, let's see what US airports have trams or trains:

JFK
EWR
MCO
TPA
MIA (if you count the one in concourse E)
ATL
DFW
ORD
DTW
MSP
DEN
LAS
SFO (if you count BART and the train to the rental car agency...is that open? I assume that it is)
SEA

Can anyone think of any others?

IAH is another airport with a tram.
PIT has one as well.
CVG's got one.
HNL too, if you count their "Wiki Wiki" shuttle, which isn't quite a tram but not quite a bus.
STL counts, as you can ride free on Metrolink between the WN concourse (East Terminal) and the main terminal.

There are probably more, but that's all I can come up with right now.

As for the pool... I'm taking May 16th as the malfunction date  Smile/happy/getting dizzy.

Finally open huh? It's about time. I was thru MSP back in December and January and they had it running back and forth. Nobody on it. Doors still blocked up. At least it is finally running.

At last, it's running. Sure felt nice to be able to ride from the A/B rotunda down to the Northstar crossing in just a few minutes, rather than walk a mile.

The underground tram has gotten stuck with passengers/employees inside before. Hopefully the same wont happen to this tram. According to the Poma-Otis website (www.poma-otis.com) other trams like the one at MSP have been installed at Cincinnati, Detroit, Tokyo and Zürich. The DTW system was customized and does look a whole lot cooler, IMO.
