Is Alitalia Going Down?

Thu May 06, 2004 1:00 pm

Hi

I've heard some news on CNN, DW and RAI about the critical situation AZ currently faces, with the strike and everything.
Is this the final shot that will kill Alitalia? I understand AF and KL said that the airline would not be welcome unless financial status get healthier.
Will Alitalia become the new Swissair of Europe? Can you picture Italy without Alitalia?
How critical is the situation?

I heard that the CEO is resigning today because they wont be granted 500.000.000 EUR from the italian government in aid.
So the ship is sinking unfortunatly.

IMO they should let the company go bancrupt and start all over again. And I think they should start by just going in to the european market as a beginning.
And name the company Italiana. I cant figure out any better name than that.

BTW. Does anyone know how their loads are on intercontinental fligths?

The company will be history in a few days...
Unfortunately missmanagement, stubborn trade-unions and failure to restructure the company several years ago led to this disaster.Italian taxpayer-as usual- has topay for the bill...

But if Alitalia gets grounded, what are the chances?

I mean, Switzerland and Belgium had an immediate replacement for their airlines. It this the case in Italy?
Will we get another airline called almost he same, with the same aircraft and livery as Sabena and Swissair case?

Sorry to disagree. AZ Group resolved their financial crisis according with Italian sources. The text is in Italian, and apparently there is no English version.

I really think that we have AZ for many years more!

MAtt:

I did make a search when posting the topic, and all news said AZ was broke. OK, maybe they are saved now (great news BTW), but how can you "just fix" an airline that has nothing but loses 11 of the last 12 years?
Do you think they can remanage the company and, just like that, start a new way of operations to make AZ sustainable?

Or they just renegotiated the debt but no important changes? Is this a sign of Alitalia out of danger? I don't think so... unless they do deep changes.

Read the book "From Worst to First" and then study the history of Ferrovie dello Stato. It will clear you some doubts.
BTW, there are experts from Continental and United helping the new management.

Matt: Why don't we continue this "debate" in your post, newer and more relevant than this one now.

ALITALIA is save for the moment, just watched the new on TV.... but one of the new business plan points is privatisation....

well as most of us know ALITALIA survived because of government support, so i wonder how they will survive as a private company  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Negative peoples get a life please, If you are all Aviation Enthusiasts I suggest you read newspaper articles advising the "world" that Alitalia is on its way up.

Just because your national carriers cannot get it right do not put down another airline. Alitalia has been in worse strife before and always came out of it.

Time will tell and you will see how AZ will be re-vitalized.

So this thread should be re-named - Alitalia is on its way Up!

(Supersonic78) They will do better as a private company.

I suggest to stop writing on this topic and to continue in the other "Alitalia has been saved! Without govt. Aid" topic.

Thanks.
Matias.
