Iron Maiden Star = First Officer On BA?

Fri May 07, 2004 4:40 am

Saw an intriguing item on "pop years" on sky one this evening, which said that Bruce Dickinson, of Iron Maiden fame, has a pilots license, and is an "occasional first officer for British Airways"

I'm sure this is rubbish, as I've never heard of a part time commercial pilot/rock star, but thought I would check with you good folks for confirmation!

does anyone know the truth behind this?

Bruce is definitely a FO for Astraeus on 737s.

Here is a shot of him on the flight deck.  Big thumbs up

Completely agree with you ..

It is funny to see him with using a pilot's uniform .
He is sure a lucky guy.

I met Bruce when he was a 757 First Officer for British World - great guy. As has been mentioned he is indeed now with Astraeus.

Also, you can be a part time pilot with most airlines, my present company allows pilots to work a 50% or 75% roster if they wish (with appropriate pro-rata pay).

On Maiden's last tour thru Europe, Astraeus had a 737 done up as "Bruce Air". With Bruce flying it took lucky fan club members from London to Paris and I think Dublin!!!!!! The other members of Maiden served as waiters in the cabin!!!!!!!!! I think a small allotment of tickets were available for the public to purchace thru Iron Maidens website. Thats really a cool promotion, both for Maiden and Astraeus!!!!!

At least you didn't say Blayze Bailey

Bruce Dickensen is one of the best fencers in the world too, he has been featured in Sports Illustrated in the past.

Dickensen was also shown in Airliner World Magazine in their article for Astreus Airlines sitting in the cockpit.

Didn't Bruce beat cancer as well? Thought I heard he had prostate cancer?

why would someone like him want to work for Astreus airlines?

is he just not good enough to hold BA/VS?

I am a huge maiden fan, so no disrespect on my part in the above question.

So by your definition BA or VS pilots must be better somehow than those in "lesser" airlines?

Get a grip on reality mate - it doesn't matter what airline you fly for or what type you fly, a pilot is a pilot, end of story.

Doesn't John Travolta also fly the 744 for Qantas when he is not on a world tour with his own 707 or in a studio for another movie?

@Max

Hi, I doubt it, that John Travolta is a regular Qantas Pilot... BUT, again, to my knowledge he served Qantas to get his licence approved and did a B747Cpt. rating in order to fly on his own B707... any information on this subject or most welcomed...

gordo smalls,
A pilot is a pilot, but usually the majors get the pick of the crop, the little guys get what's left. A pilots salary is better at a major than a little guy so the question still goes unanswered. Did he apply to a major such as VS or BA? or is their flexibility with these guys that he likes?

With BA or Virgin, Bruce probably couldn't get the time off he needs to tour with Maiden

Regarding the fencing, there's a great bit with him on the Rock in Rio DVD. And as he says, whenever he walks through customs with holes in his arms, the story behind them is often far from what people usually thing Big grin There's also a bit where he flies around in a RG simulator - complete with a landing attempt at Kai Tak.

Curiously, he flew the Iceland Express route ex Reykjavik to CPH with a load of Maiden fans, when Iron Maiden played at last years Roskilde Festival.

With Astraeus being somewhat a charter airline, I think it suits him, since the demand for pilots is a bit up & down.

The dude strikes me as someone who does not do anything half-assed. World-class fenceman, commercial pilot, singer/songwriter/rockstar, seemingly a nice guy without much of the bagage the average rockstar carries. Most folk would be satisfied with one of those traits.

BTW, I hear Di'Anno is playing a local dive in your town soon.. Run to the hills.

Just had to add this, taken from the Roskilde Festival newspaper:

According to the article it came from, he flies 5 months a year with Astraeus + having a look at the Maiden website, it also looks like he flies the band around when they're on tour.
