NWA's A330's

Fri May 07, 2004 5:52 am

They have 7 of them now...#8 came ahead of #7....the seventh is going into service on May 28th...delayed due to "mechanical" reasons, but it was earlier reported in here that it was due to lightning strikes in France...that will be the last of the -300's, then NWA starts to get the -200's begining in mid-2004...

Sweet. What was the reason for 3301 being delayed? I remember 3302 coming first last July. Will the 200 require training flights like they had when the first one came last year? Thanks for the info  Smile/happy/getting dizzy.

Hammer, There is one more 330-300's to be delivered this year, and seven 330-200's for a total of eight.

I thought NWA had ordered ten A333s? Only 8 of them? That's pitiful!

Thrust... how pitiful, you're wrong. They've ordered 24 of them. 10 -200s and 14 -300s. NO airline takes delivery of all their planes at once.

Heh, I like you, but I always wonder where you get the numbers you write in posts.  Laugh out loud

I've heard that Boston and Seattle are the next stations to get the 330s (both for AMS flights), but does anyone know when?

Ugh, we repeat this every week.

The orginial A330 / A340 order was placed way back in the early 90's and continually deffered due to financial health and what-not.
In 2001, NW officially placed a firm order for 24 A330-300's. This came from the order that had been continually deffered. That order was for 36 aircraft and is being cancelled at a rate of 4 aircraft per year. Thus for whatever reason Airbus and their accounting and ordering procedure is why the numbers are so high.

Then in 2002, the order was altered, still for a total of 24 A330's, but a mix of 14 -300's, and 10 -200's.

Deliveries began last summer. Yes 3302 came before 3301, primarily due to test flying and the order of manufacturing over in France.

In 2004, NW will take delivery of 3 -300's and 7 -200's for a total fleet of 15 A330's by year-end (8 -300's, 7 -200's)
-3306 was delivered in March
-3307 was to have been delivered in April but was damaged due to lightning strikes during test flights in France. Thus requiring repairs, checks, and re-painting, as mentioned it is now set to be delivered at the end of May.
-3308 was delivered this week.

After that, that is all the -300's until 2005. The next delivery (after 3308 when its repaired) will be of the -200 varients arriving sometime in July. Yes they will require initial test flying, crew familarization, and the works. Tenatively they are set to enter revenue service sometime in September on West-Coast - NRT - and beyond routes. SEA, SFO, and PDX all will EVENTUALLY see the A330-200 put on routes to NRT, plus some beyond NRT flying too. As to which city will get it first, thats anyone's guess and has NOT YET BEEN OFFICIALLY determined. Yes, PDX-NRT will initially start as a DC-10 and transition to an A330-200 in the fall. SFO will likely do the same. LAX will remain 742/744. SEA-NRT is a wild-card, it could stay 742 for a while, or switch to A330-200, all depends on matching capacity with demand. Now I know someone is going to chime in here and say "I heard from my mail-man's dentist who's neighbors with the SEA station manager for AS who heard that they were getting the A330-200 FIRST." Well, guess what, you can say that all you want, but IT HAS NOT YET BEEN OFFICIALLY DETERMINED WHAT TRANS-PACIFIC ROUTES WILL GET THE ABSOLUTE FIRST A330-200.

End of rant

As for the -300's, here's how it shapes up:

1) DTW-AMS*
2) DTW-AMS*
3) DTW-AMS*
4) DTW-AMS*
5) DTW-AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA
6) DTW-CDG
7) DTW-FCO (Starts May 13)
8) operational spare

* For May the schedule will be slightly different due to the delayed delivery of ship 3308 as mentioned above. For now through May 13, all 4 DTW-AMS flights will operate with the A330. May 13-May 21, Flights 68/67 will operate with either an A330 or DC-10, dependent if the spare A330 is available or in mx. May 22-23 DTW-AMS 68/67 will operate as a 747-400. May 24-25, A330 or DC-10, May 26-30 68/67 will operate as a 747-200. After that they should all be A330-300, assuming 3308 is not delayed further.

This is the A330-300 schedule through October. DTW-FCO operates seasonally through October 30th. After this date, DTW-LGW will switch from DC-10 to an A330.

Beyond that, again, NOTHING HAS OFFICIALLY BEEN DETERMINED as to where the next -300's in 2005 will be allocated. You can guess/debate/fight/bicker all you want, you might as well just wait until its been decided by the powers that be.

I was just asking him if he as an FA. I flew with someone who had a nickname Hammer. It wasn't my intent to offend anyone.

Jetjack74,
I'm just playing around... I don't know if Hammer's a FA or not, but I suspect the answer's no.
