Glasgow Prestwick Is A Glasgow Airport Yes Or No?

Fri May 07, 2004 6:39 am

HI Everyone me and scottishladdie have been having a debate about PIK and I say it is a Glasgow airport as to me its pretty local and I stay in Glasgow and take I would say between 20 and 30 mins to get to. I stay really close to GLA int and would even go as far as to say its less hassle just to drive down to pik.

Neutrality means that u don't really care cos the struggle goes on even when ur not there, blind and unaware

As far as I'm aware its about 30/40miles from Glasgow Airport/Glasgow itself. I was planning on a day trip with Ryanair from Stansted but realised it was ages away from Glasgow and would cost me more than the airfare to get from the airport to the city!!

No, PIK is in Ayrshire. From the centre of Glasgow it is almost 50 miles to PIK- 'as the crow flies'. The distance from Glasgow to PIK is almost the same as EDI to GLA.
It is like saying Berwick-Upon Tweed( for those of you who know your UK geog) is local to Edinburgh. RAF Edinburgh instead of RAF Leuchars.
It doesn't help that they hold back and hinder each other rather than complement each other either.
It's not really GLASGOW Prestwick it is either just Prestwick, or as I like to call it. Prestwick Ayrport.  Big grin

The main reason is because Ryanair operate there. They demand city name not particularly nearby in the name. Look at Paris Beavais. Not exactly in Paris is it.
Frankfurt Hahn not exactly in Frankfurt is it.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Prestwick the ex-defacto airport for Glasgow? To me that means that the airport is part of the Glasgow infrastructure, but then, I ain't a native of Scotland either.

IATA decide what city an airport is defined as serving.

The April 2004 IATA Coding Directory defines PIK as a Glasgow airport.

End of story, IATA have defined Prestwick as serving Glasgow.

Prestwick has always been a Glasgow Airport. Until the government was taken to court in 1990 by Air 2000 all Trans-Atlantic flights from Glasgow were legally obliged to use Preskwick, and were not allowed to operate from GLA. That was long before anyone had ever heard of Ryanair!

bmi330,
Stop being so hostile. I don't think you have any justification to criticize the accuracy of ScottishLaddie's posts, especially given the frequency of mistakes in your spelling and grammar.

Editing a post is preferable to just leaving the mistakes.

Yeah your right it is part of Glasgows infristruture its correct name starthclydes infrastructure. PIK was once the transatlantic gateway to Scotland until air 2000 chalenged this in the 90's so they could fly GLA - Orlando. So yes Buckfifty you are correct. Pik is also the only Airport in Scotland with its own rail startion until GLA rail link gose on line in 2007 i think.

FYI Mikedlyer if your flying up on FR from STN your best getting off at Pailsey Gilmour St station from there a bus links up GLA, or you could walk its only about 15/20mins, being pedantic GLA is technically in Paisley.
Trains from PIK are 20 and 50 mins past the hour on weekdays, about 40mins travel time to Paisley, show your FR itinerary to the ticket collector on the train and youll get a discounted ticket its £2.50 to glasgow Central, probably a bit less to paisley, this is ow (the past couple of times ive used this train no ticket collector has appeared)

I admit my spelling sucks cause am a little dislexic but is the facts not correct? I am only hostile to him as we have been discusing this on MSN messinger and he cant take being wroung so i am proving it to him. Thanks for clearing it UP that PIK is 100% a GLA airport.

Would you class Glasgow as being on the West coast of Scotland or in the central belt?

well, its either; glasgow, carlisle, or lockerbie, which are proably the most well known towns in that area (even tho Carlisle is no-where near). pik is a long way from GLA centre, but calling itself 'GLASGOW blah blah' is better than carlisle/ayr/lockerbire-because, well, where the hell are those places? PIK may not be in the GLA council area, but GLA is the main attraction. but if you dont agree, i dont give a toss, thats what i thinnk- if i wanna go from PIK i have to change to a local train to PIK, so do a lot of people coming from Scotland

Prestwick is a Glasgow airport. Although the way things are going, EDI, GLA and PIK will get absolutly hammered by NCL.
When you hear the noise of the Tartan Army Boys, we'll be coming down the road!

Hi,

Cant believe some of the nonsense some of you spout, ecspecially that last bit GKirk!!!

Prestwick is a Glasgow Airport like it or not, people have choice thats the main thing if they want to fly from GLA then fly from GLA likewise with PIK, people can be very elitest between the two airports and sometimes it descends to the fact that some people are just plain snobs.

I am sorry but Glasgow (GLA) is my local airport but if l am going to a destination where it costs 250 quid to fly to from GLA and Ryanair serves a similar destination from PIK and only charges 50 quid then come on you would be mad not to take it.

As for Newcastle, GKirk you are entitled to your opinion and where you want to fly from, but NCL isnt taking as many Scottish Passengers as you would like to believe, GLA and EDI dont need Easyjet to take them on a low cost holiday as now we have 3 x Flyglobepan's based at GLA, 2 x at EDI as well as the Air Scotland 757 so think about, if you are in central scotland what you gonna do?? bet the answer is not to go to NCL.

The funny thing is people in the Tyne area are looking for a NYC connection with the likes of Continental, but if you use your logic then with NCL taking lots of scottish pax then the same could quite easily be said of CO at EDI they will be taking lots of English pax, you see where l am coming from.

Ciao
