I will be flying Japan Airlines from SFO-Tokyo on a 744, Beijing-Tokyo on a 772 and then Tokyo-SFO on a 744, in September. These will all be in Buisness Class. I have had a hard time finding much about the quality of service on Japan Airlines and I wonder how it is. I never see them on "Best Of" lists and I am hoping that it is relatively high-quality. All of my International trips have been in First Class on BA, NZ, SQ, or AA. Due to trying to cut-down on costs, my family has opted to do this trip in Biz Class. Will this be a huge step down? Thanks for any input.

I can't compare JAL Business Class to BA, NZ, SQ or AA First Class.
But I can tell you, that JAL has an excellent Business Class. I flew it several times:
AA), Japan">NRT-AA), China">PEK 744
AA), China">PEK-KIX D10

AB) (MNL / RPLL), Philippines">MNL-AA), Japan">NRT 742
AA), Japan">NRT-KUL 772
I would say, that the JAL Business in the 772 e.g. can be compared to the current SQ Business Class in the 772 (on the Asian routes). If not mistaken, JAL introduces a new Business Class as well but till now only on the London and North America routes.
The staff are very friendly, the food (Western and Japanese) are excellent and the IFE is on demand as well.

Unfortunately you won't get the new Shell seats on the NRT-SFO and NRT-PEK services. They only use it on HEAVY competiition routes (JFK/LHR).
I don't understand why people think Japanese airlines are good. I travelled in J on NH before from AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA-NRT.
Food = Bad
Seat = uncomfortable (designed for SMALL Japanese people)
However one thing that is good is SERVICE!

Cx123, the JAL C class seats in the 772 are very similar to the SQ 772 seats. Can't speak of ANA C class, I only flew C on JAL.
