I Wanna Fly A Russian Airplane!-BEst Way To Do It

Fri May 07, 2004 7:11 pm

Hey
I really want to fly on soviet/Russian/Eastern European/Whatever you want to call them aircraft, such as a Tupolev, Ilyushin, Yakovlev and the like. Just want to know which the cheapest way to do it. I think i can connect to a flight in London, Hanover, Berlin, or Paris. And would like to know if any of you have been on a flight from these airport; whats it cost, aircraft and any visa requirements (of course, depending on the destination). I really wanna go on one and I thinking of taking the plunge in Spetember sometime. No too bothered where-id love to try Russia, saying that ive learned the language!

HI ALEX,

well, today I recieved an offer by an german aviation-group! The special officer includes TU154 flights from germany on sunday and return on thursday, incl. hotel in bulgaria from cologne or dusseldorf. Price: starting from around 120pound/sterling.

If you are interested, let me know, I will look if I will find it again!

Kras Air have a varied fleet - Tu 134 / 154 / 204, Il62 / 86 - should certainly guarantee an interesting flight...

I should also say - try to get on the Tu 134 - great fun to fly. The sensation is something like a CRJ with RB211s fitted on the back!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I'd really like to take a flight by IL62. It is absolutely my favourite Soviet/Russian jet!

Noseplugs or Vicks Vap-O-Rub to put on your upper lip
are highly recommended.
First, benzene in my Perrier, and now this!

It's easy!
You just need to book a ticket to Iran and get a domestic flight on one of private Iranian low-cost airlines. I bet you'll get the chance to fly on a Tu154 or Yak42!
Thank to US embargos against Iran's aviation industry...

Pouyazad, isn't it possible to acquire European aircrafts to Iranian airlines?

I continue to be stunned that people go out of their way to fly on these things. At the same time, I can't help but admit that I get a little tingle of excitement whenever I have the chance to ride in one. I think it's the whole exdperience - the flapping seatbacks, the aloof F/As, the people smoking in the loo, and the fighterjet piloting style. Yep, I'm a junky too. I'll be sad when they're all replaced with Boeings, Airbuses and RJs. You owe it to yourself to get a ride on a Yak-40 before it's too late.

Mn,
They love to but it is almost impossible as sanction laws say Iran can't purchase aircrafts with more than 10% American parts. Recently Airbus refused to sell Iran 4 ordered A330 just because of that.

I know it´s pretty far from England, but in the case you come to Mexico, you could fly MEX-HAV on a Cubana IL-62(which is a great aircraft btw) and visit Cuba.

Cheers,

Damn, Henpol747 just said my opinion!  Big thumbs up

For us Americans the best if not the only choice would be Cubana. I had the chance to fly them twice on a Russian-built aircraft and once in an AOM DC-10 CUN-HAV-CUN. Let me tell you, that take off power on the Il-62M is nothing but AMAZING!

If you want to do it on the cheap, I would recommend first either going to Cancun or Nassau, Bahamas and then second, fly on Cubana Air to Havana. I think they still use AN24's on those hauls. Shell out more cash and you can fly on an IL 62 from Havana to Madrid.

Keep in mind that going to Cuba is illegal in most circumstances, except as permitted by the US State Dept.

You can fly Aeroflot from LAX to Vladivostok on an IL 96.

You may be able to catch a TU 154, TU 134, or IL 76 out of London to points east on various airlines.

Be sure and check the airline before choosing a flight as Aeroflot is increasingly replacing the old Russian built stuff with Airbus and Boeing equipment.
If wishes were horses, a Tail Dragger I would fly...
