East Texas Regional/ GGG Airline Svc Memories?

Sat May 08, 2004 3:41 am

Good afternoon, all.

I just dropped a couple of my friends off at GGG (East Texas regional, formerly Gregg County Municipal). I have been going to school out here for two years, and taking friends to the airport for about that amount of time. When we started, American Eagle flew 5 Saab 340s in and out every day- now they are down to three.
My question is:
I noticed today that there are three airline counters in the terminal. One is occupied by American Eagle, but as they are the only airline to serve GGG, the other two have generic airplane stuff stuck on the wall.
I wonder if other airlines served in the past? ASA/Delta Commuter? Texas Int'l/TTa? Does anyone remember? I really like the airport, as everything is ground level, and you can see the 340s up close... Unfortunately, you can't go outside with them....

Thanks ahead of time,
R

You are correct. The most recent carrier to have served GGG was DL/ASA. Texas Int'l was a long time prescence at GGG until TT discontinued flying the Convair 600s in transitioning to all jet / national carrier.

A few years ago, AAEagle announced it was leaving GGG, but decided to stay at the last minute. Now that TYR has a new terminal, I would bet most passengers just make the drive there instead of dealing with GGG.

I always thought that the Tyler-Longview area could do well by building a joint airport halfway between the two cities, like somewhere west of Kilgore just off I-20. That would serve an area of about 500,000 people and might be able to draw RJ flights to places like ATL, MEM, etc., but with the new terminal at TYR, doesn't look like that will happen now. Plus, I think people who live within 200 miles of DFW are just used to the idea of driving to DFW for air service; many don't even think about the possibility of flying from ABI, SPS, ACT, TYR, or GGG.

Wow. Didn't know. Well, I hope things pick up- 3 Saab 340s a day is not much traffic.

I live in Shreveport and fly out of GGG. Reasons: it 40 minutes from Shreveport Regional to GGG, I can arrive 20 minutes before flight time, AA people and TSA are great, and GGG makes flying fun!! P.S. Parking is 3 bucks per day using the honor box.

Compared to Shreveport with bad airport management and it is a TSA training ground with at times very rude TSA people.

My memory-
I flew out of GGG in the summer of 1997. I was going to Air Force field training, and at the time I had left Austin for some summer school at SFA in Nacogdoches. Well for the Air Force, they buy tickets from the nearest airport to your point of departure. GGG was/is the closest airport to Nacogdoches/Lufkin with airline service. So I flew out and a month later flew back on AE. Quaint little airport and all went well! But I haven't been back since  Big grin

Wholly mackarel, Lt-AWACS.
Lemme get this straight. Your signature says, "ciao," "hook 'em," and "Texas is bigger than France." And yet your username says you're from Belieze? Wow- you have got some serious culture conflicts in there. Italy meets Austin meets Belieze meets Paris.
I sure like GGG too, but flying to Dallas is ridiculously expensive- $250. Considering I can get a ticket from DFW-LAS for $189 on the same days, it's a rip off for a 2.5 hour drive. OF course, by next week, it'll cost $250 in gas to drive that length.....

Most people in east texas just drive to houston or dallas. When you factor in the layover from the connecting flight from GGG or SHV, it probably takes about the same amount of time when flying American, Southwest, or Continental.

KAUSpilot-- I used to drive from SHV to D/FW or IAH. No more, the traffic and I am ready to get home on the return. Plus D/FW parking is $$$$. I wonder how many people's finally destination is D/FW when they fly out of Longview, Tyler, Texarkana,Wichita Falls, Shreveport, etc. I guess not many. The GGG fares intrastate (Texas) and the bordering states is fairly cheap. Like the guy said earlier GGG is a quaint little airport, plus it is fun to fly out of. (no hassles and friendly people)

I've had similar experiences with the airport at ACT. Occasionally, fares here at AUS will be very high, and if you're flying AA (like I always do), you will pretty much have to connect through DFW. If the fare is cheaper (which is rare, but it does happen), I can drive 1 1/2 hours to Waco, park for free, connect through DFW, and be on my way. It's good to see that some of these smaller Texas airports are attracting such passengers.
