Runway Usage At MIA

Sat May 08, 2004 7:59 am

Hey all,

I just wanted to know if there are specifications for runway usage at MIA. I was at the 94th squadron a couple of days ago and looking on 09R what I saw the most where cargo planes (Tampa, Centurion, Gemini, Amerijet) but hardly saw any passenger heavies t/o or landing on 9R except for a Martinair 763. I know in airports such as BOG 13R is mostly used for heavies coming from overseas, and 13L is for smaller a/c serving domestic routes. Is this the case in MIA? What is a good place to spot on 12 and 9L?

It changes day to day at MIA. 09R is used alot for arrivals but little for departures except Cargo unless there is a wind issue or someone is doing maintnence on another runway. It is a really long drive out there from the terminal. I only dept once on that runway to GRU on AA in the middle of the night. The only carrier I saw ever use that runway on a regular basis was PanAM 747's headed for Europe. And that was a while ago !!!

The runway usage also depends on the departure route and departure gateway, for example if it's the EONNS, they'll use the 9R so they don't have to cross departing 9L traffic, and if it's say HEDLY, 9L. It also depends on the winds and how much room an aircraft needs for a safe takeoff. However, the 9s are most oftenly used at MIA as opposed to the 27s, but it varies on wind. That may not have directly answered your question, but I hope it helps some.
