UAs Channel 9 On 757s?

Sat May 08, 2004 10:34 am

I'm going to be flying United pretty soon from New York to Denver, and I noticed on United's entertainment website that Channel 9 is no longer listed as being on the 757/767. http://www.discmarketing.com/UA/245/indexNS.html Is it still there, or should I try to get a flight on a 319/320?

Cheers,

Not certain on this but maybe if the pilot decides not to have the flight deck conversation switched on that is what is played? Hopefully somebody who knows a little more can give you a better answer.

Channel 9 ATC communications is on all our aircraft including the 757. Disc Marketing is our music vendor and likely wouldn't promote this feature since they can't make money off of it. Channel 9 is on at captains discretion.

No need to change your travel plans! Hope you enjoy your flight with us at United!

From a friend of mine at UA...

Page 70 of the May issue says that on 757 and 767 (and
also the 737), Ch9 can be either "Jazz Session" or
"From the Cockpit", meaning if the Capt selects Ch9
off, you'll hear the jazz. The jazz is on channel 14
on other fleets.
"Irregardless, it's a Cat III airplane, we don't need an alternate!"

They do list it as being available on the 747, 777 and 320/319, but maybe that's because they have nothing else on that channel. In any case, I'm still not sure which I'll book, since I have to see which departure times fit best.

Thanks for the quick replies in clearing that up!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

The last 767 I took on UA elected to turn the feature off, which is too bad, But I don't blame the crew. It was a transcon 767 and I can understand the crew's reluctance, given the recent past.

UA's cockpit audio is a great feature and one of the unique (for US) treats for flyers. I hope that they continue offering this!

Last UA 757 I flew on IAD-LAX they had jazz on channel 9 - yuk.

I asked the cabin crew if we could have "From the flightdeck" on 9 and they said they's ask the captain but it never happened. When we got off the flight, the captain was saying goodbyes and thankyous to the passengers. I said to the captian as I got off "Shame flying the friendly skies doesn't include being friendly enough to respond to passenger requests to have ATC on channel 9"

He seemed to be rather embarrassed. Hopefully, next time he'll be more responsive!

BritPilot, afaik, Channel 9 is only switched on while in US Airspace.

Last time i was flying UA intercontinental (ORD-AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA), the last thing I heard in channel 9 was Gander.

now I feel pissed  Smile

I was hoping all the time to hear ATC communications from arriving in european airspace to AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA and all that kept me from hating that pilot for switching it off was that I thought there might be some regulations (since it also says "communication between the flight deck and the FAA" or sth like that in hemispheres magazine)...  Smile

BRITPILOT777,
Why do you think that was? I just went IAD-LHR and it wasn't on either, when asking the flight attendant, one was helpful and the other thought she knew the guy who put each rivet into the plane.

I was on a 777 2 months earlier and it was on, weird.
maybe FA4UA knows.

Firstly, Daumueller, as has been pointed out Channel 9 is available outside of US airspace. My United flight from ORD to LHR 772 2 weeks back had it on from boarding till I left my seat, and I was 42A!!!

Secondly, Ual777contrail, not entirely sure why my flight didn't have Channel 9 on. I'm guessing it is because the 744 I was on was one of the older aircrafts in the fleet. No PTV's and the Screen at the front seemed to be black and white.  Sad

We also have to remember its totally up to the Capt. whether or not they have it turned on or not.

Aircraft wise, i've been on a United 763, 733, A320, 752 and 772 and they all had channel 9 on. To be honest, not sure why the Capt would choose not to have it on. It's one of the most innovative things out there in the aviation world!!

Its a shame not more airlines offer this service as I expect it would be extremely popular. I instead have to listen to my scanner which people don't really approve of!

Thanks Dave  Big thumbs up

Mir,

I flew DEN-LGA-DEN a few weeks back and the 757s I flew on had CH 9.

Along these lines, I seem to remember a flight I took many years ago on American that had a over-the-pilot's shoulder video picture on the cabin screens. Did they do this, or am I getting delusional as I grow older?

Hope you get Channel 9 switched on. I was on a 757 on the 6th May LGA-IAD and was on the whole time. Have heard that jazz though - nasty!

Wow, I never knew about this feature. I might have to run a UA flight one of these days. Too bad I grew up on DL and US -- lived in CVG and CLT my whole life...  Insane I've never had the chance to experiance this, and I don't have a scanner... Yet...  Smile

United Airlines advertise Channel 9 as an exclusive only available on United Airlines. (EDIT - to answer the question - so I doubt that it is available)

Sorry. Have a good flight though.

Also, with regard to UA's flights in the UK, listening in to ATC transmissions is technically illegal - could be why some Captains seem to decide to switch it off in UK airspace. Has happened to me a couple of times befoe arrival into LHR.

I've flown over 50 times with United this year already, and I think only once, the captain decided not to have it on. The flight was SFO-LAX on a 767-300 (probably for positioning purposes). The reg was N669UA. I didn't mind, since I enjoyed an episode of Becker and amazing views out of the window.

Most captains will have the feature on.

Enjoy your flight!

Is UA the only airline to use channel 9?

I flew UA from ORD to LGA last night, and the feature was off  Sad
I really enjoy the feature though. After a while, I even understand the majority of what is going on! ha ha.

Just flew LGA-DEN this morning on a UA 757. Channel is still there and is available on all of the 757's in the fleet. If it's not on it's probably because of:

1. The crew forgot to turn it on (happened to me on a lot of flights in 2003)
2. The captain did not want it on
3. It was broken (I had a flight on N109UA which is a 744 and the crew said channel 9 hadn't worked for months)

It has been on every flight I have been on with UA fortunately. Of course the majority of my flying with them was UAX, so I have only had a few opportunities to hear it. It was really cool though flying IAD - CDG.

My most memorable moment with it involved ATC making a request of the pilot that was not very feasible at our current altitude and/or airspeed. I wish I remembered exactly how it went, but the pilot's response was pretty funny. And then the controller kinda chuckled and issued a slightly different instruction. I always love how friendly the banter is usually between ATC and Crew.
