What's The Best Way To Get To Detroit?

Sun May 09, 2004 5:41 am

I'm planning a trip to Detroit this summer and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if I'd be better off paying slightly more to fly on Northwest or taking Spirit's lower fare.

Thanks for all the help  Big grin

Well you can also try LAN and FNT. Depending on where you are going, they may not be so far out of the way. And LAN has the complimentary biz center with Wi-Fi and wired net access.

I flew Spirit about a month ago DTW-MYR and had no problems with the service or flight. If Spirit is any cheaper, I would recommend taking Spirit. You will get the same exact service LGA-DTW, whether its NWA or NK. I'd say the only difference will be having have to go through the older terminal and DTW, but its not bad.

You might want to check out NW's website. You might be able to get a very competitive price, more back up service vs. Spirit, and you get to use the Worldport facility, the new terminal at DTW.

DTW-LGA, NW often price matches Spirit, that being said you are probably better off flying NW as you will have more frequencies, a wider variety of aircraft to choose from (DC-9, A319/A320, or 757 dependent on the flight) vs. Spirit's MD-80's, and fly in/out of the Worldgateway in DTW, as opposed to the third-world dump called the LC Smith terminal.

Its up to you, whatever price you prefer and whether you have an FF account. Either way you'd be stupid to not take the nonstop on either one of these airlines.

Actually, I have no idea what the prices are, but American Eagle flies DTW-LGA also with ERJ's. If you want to ride on the jungle jet, then fly them, although unless the price was really good, I'd take the others.

Either way, you'll probably have the same service whom ever you choose. I just flew into DTW via NW for the first time on Thursday (check my trip report), VERY VERY nice concourse!

You can fly LGA-MDW-FNT on ATA for around $250. Get a chance to ride on a nice 738.

Increase you life expectancy and ride on NW. There's no way I would let any of my family or friends ride on Spirit.....Yes I'm aware that I am going to take a shelling due to my airlines past safety record, but I have my reasons for avoiding Spirit.

Isn't American Eagle still flying LGA-DTW?

Other than that, it's NW. See the Worldgateway, ride the tram!

with all of this talk of NW and DTW, I have to ask, when do you think NW will retire those DC-9's?  Nuts

The only reason that I even brought up the Spirit flight was because my grandfather read that we could upgrade on Spirit for about the same price as Northwest's coach ticket, but in the end Northwest won out! Big grin Thank G-d.

Thanks for all of the help!

Well, yeah, if NW and NK are the same price, I would go with NW also.  Big thumbs up

While I've already booked my trip, I was wondering if anyone has ever flown on Spirit and could tell me what the experience was like. I figure for such a short flight, 1 hour and 49 minutes, that the service wouldn't be all that different between the two, but I could be wrong. Also, is the upgrade to Spirit Plus worth it?

Thanks for the help  Big grin

Best way to get to Detroit? I-75 or I-94. Just kidding...I would fly USAirways before they go bye-bye. You will change at PIT, of course. If you want to see the new building, do NW.

if you are going to DTW go Northwest. If you are leaving from LAX you will be on a 757-300 both ways.
