CDG-AMS - Which Should I Go For?

Sun May 09, 2004 6:41 am

I am currently in the process of constructing my mainland European tour, for execution in September, with an emphasis on full days at the main airports visited.

At the moment, I am scheduled to start at CDG about 6am and leave for LTN at 2200 or so, giving me the entire day at CDG. I would then fly from LTN to AMS at 0600 the next morning. While this would indeed give me a full day at CDG, I have seen a good deal (53 pounds) with Varig and its 772 from CDG to AMS. The only problem is – and there usually is a problem – that it leaves CDG at 1600, thereby reducing my time at the airport. (It would also mean I fly 6 times and not 7, but I’m not too bothered about that.)

I’m confused about which to go for, hence my thread. It's a case of a different airline and a good aircraft, or a 6 additional hours at CDG. In terms of price, it would be slightly cheaper to go for the direct CDG-AMS flight.

Which would you choose and why?

Hi pe@rson,

I would choose Varig for their 777 because it will be replaced by a MD11 soon.
The only other options are AF and KLM with 319/320/737. Their fares ares slightly more expensive.

Alternatively you can go to Orly and take easyjet to GVA or NCE and take another EZY flight to AMS from there. I believe EZY also flies from CDG. Via GVA only A319's and via NCE only 737's. I think via GVA will be the cheapest way to go but maybe not cheaper than a direct flight. But for aprox. the same price you have 1 or 2 extra airports and 1 extra flight. I would do that any time although I really would choose the Varig 777 in this case myself.

When do you arrive at AMS James. I can take you to the runways if our schedules match and if you would like that of course.

All the best,

I would aslo choose Varig, purely because of the fact tht you will be in a 777 that has spacious accomadation and not AF who have dirty planes and just a 320 family plane on the route! Just my opinion.

Thanks Dave  Big thumbs up

I've done it with Varig and it was great - big aircraft with almost nobody on it! The only thing you have to be careful of is if the flight is delayed into CDG (and it frequently is) - you then are left at the mercy of Varig.

Thanks for your replies.

Sander - I'll let you know!

Trident - if it was delayed by 2 hours, I'd be quite happy.  Wink/being sarcastic

Yeah, I'll go with RG. Amadeus says it'll be on an MD-11, and I hope it is, as I've flown 772s a few times and never an MD-11.

I just got back from AMS. RG came in with a MD-11 today, just before I left. It was delayed.
I was lucky because I wanted to hear the trust reverse of a heavy before I went home an it happened to be a RG MD-11.

LOL! Nice one. I've been to AMS 3 times before and only need a few of KL's 738s and its new 772s. Shouldn't be too difficult!

Will RG use its M11s and not its 772s in Sept?

I spoke to a potential new member yesterday (we should get some sort of bonus for recruiting new members) and he said it will be permanently a MD-11 from June. Until now they send in an MD-11 instead of a 772 occasionally.

I don't share your enthusiasm. Although I haven't flown on a MD-11 either, I was looking for an opportunity to fly on the 772 to CDG. I guess I'm too late now.

Are you planning to go in September? I was thinking of a possible AMS meet for the last weekend of that month.

Yep, should be in AMS at 1710 on the 9th Sept. and be there until I depart at 1700 the next day on Basiq to MAD.

According to Amadeus the MD-11 will replace the B777 during the month of May (probably one of its B777 in maintenance). From June they've still planned the B777 on the AMS flights

I'm just trying to book my flight with RG from CDG to AMS. I have entered my phone number, as required, but it says it's not valid. It's like this:

Country Code: ........
City Code: .............
Phone: ..................

I'll put 44 for the first, 01234 for the second, and 567891 for the last. I have taken the '0' out of the 01234 to see if it would work but it wouldn't. I don't know why it's not working. Any ideas?

Have you tried putting +44 in the country code? Sometimes you have to use the + sign to indicate the access code.

Yeah, I tried that but, again, to no avail. Don't worry though - I can book the flight at the same price (53.50 GBP) on Opodo.com. Cheers for your help, though.
