Sun May 09, 2004 11:23 am

Reno would have way more service at this point if AA hadn't bought out QQ and discontinued all the service.

RNO will lose a little more service when F9 axes one of its two daily nonstops in late July. Hopefully it'll just be a seasonal adjustment. Truth be told, RNO would make a very good CR7/Horizon market.

NWA used to fly A319/320's into RNO, but they have gone to 757's because of the higher loads...

Well, I stand corrected...they have gone back to A319/320's again....my bad, but they did have a few 757's going there in the past few months...I miss the non-stop to/from DTW...

Reno is nothing but really low low fares. It makes it hard for anyone outside Southwest to make money at Reno. Loads are usually pretty good (especially Fridays and Sundays). But given the revenue is low, airlines usually have a better place to go with the plane.

Reno is a tough market, its all about low fare low yeild traffic but there is not enough volume to make it an interesting destination like Las Vegas. RenoAir used Reno as its hub (obviously) for north-south west coast services with very moderate success, and RenoAir itself jumped at the opportunity to take over AA's services at SanJose when AA downsized at SanJose the first time around - operations at SanJose were more profitable than those at hometown Reno.

Reno gets a decent amount of flights to connect to most major hubs and Alaska/Horizon provides west coast connections - I dont see much else happening there for the time being since Southwest is a player in the market, which keeps fares down.

Also, visitors to Reno have dropped due to the growth of casinos around the US and Vegas growth since the Reno Air days. There have become fewer reasons for many people to visit the city in the last 10 years since there was nothing unique about gambling anymore.

Fortunately, the area has finally started investing in attractions such as the new free whitewater kayaking and rafting park near downtown.

The Reno area is also focusing more on business growth and non-gambling visitors which may help in the future.

i always thought RNO would be a good JetBlue destination, as they could serve it on the red-eye with one daily and tap into the NYC market. granted, its super-low yield and not the volume of LAS, but ... maybe...

Socalatc:

That flight goes LAX/RNO/SEA and vice-versa.
I think the RNO/SEA leg does pretty well and then SEA/RNO and RNO/LAX.
so it's probably worth operating. During the winter there is more traffic
LAX/RNO with skiers. The southbound leg does well because it connects
with the bank of Mexico flights out of LAX.
