News Of MenaJet...

Sun May 09, 2004 8:38 pm

Riad Mekkaoui & Mazen Hajjar confirmed that their 2 Airbus A320 will start operating flights for the new startup Lebanese LCC MenaJet before next summer, but the airline has not received yet the formal approval of the Lebanese Gov. to start operations.

The airline should fly from BEY to the Gulf and to Paris-Orly first, and then BCN.

M. Keith McMann (ex EasyJet) has been hired by the airline to organise the fare policy on the example of EasyJet and Ryanair.

MenaJet plans to sell the round trip ticket BEY-ORY-BEY between $200 and $250...

I think that flights from BEY to European destinations will be very popular, specially Paris Orly. I hope they fly to London too.

You have any idea if they have succeeded to lease the 2 A320s? Also, what engine type they have chosen.

Regards.

Apparently, they have the 2 aircraft. They are powered by IAE V2500 engines.

before next summer

Do you mean summer 2004 or 2005?

Does anybody know the seating capacity in their A320s? If its a LCC you would expect them to being densely packed (maybe 185 seats) but if they fly to Western Europe, I guess they'll have to make them alittle spacious for the longer journeys.

I hope they concentrate on the Middle Eastern market before expanding too much in Europe.

Anyway good luck to them!

Horus,

185 seats in a A320 is IMPOSSIBLE, simply because the A320 is certified for a maximum of 180 PAX. (it was originally 179... it's been simplified to 180 by the aviation authorities in 1990 I think)

When I talk about next summer , it's summer 2004.
We are in May 2004, so in Spring until June 21st...  Wink/being sarcastic

FlySSC,

menaJet no longer has its A320s that it originally had. The two they had went to AeroFlight of Germany.

So at the moment, they do not have aircraft unless they just got 2 within the past couple days!

The IAE powered A320s will make more sense since MEA's A321s have the same engines too. I mean it will be easier for them to maintain.

Air Arabia's A320 are CFM powered.

Very true OD720.

menaJet will be using MEA's MASCO facilities for maintenance.

BA,

I just coming back from a few days in BEY. I saw many advertisement and read articles about the imminent launch of MenaJet in various newspapers or magazines, including the serious "L'Orient-Le jour".

A friend of mine, Pilot for M.E.A, confirmed that MenaJet doesn't have yet all the authorizations required from the Lebanese Gov. to start operations.

R.Mekkaoui & M.Hajjar apparently confirmed in Paris last week that "two airbus A320-214 will start operations very soon for MenaJet" (sic)

Thanks for the info FlySSC. I really wonder why they haven't started selling tickets yet if they are starting operations before this summer?!?!

OD720,

You are indeed correct and that certainly isn't good.

Am I right when I say MASCO is the only maintenance provider in Beirut?

Anyways, MEA's MASCO has he capability of doing full maintenance for the IAE V2500s, but not the CFM56s.

That makes me wonder..........

Speaking of the number of seats on menaJet's A320s. I also think jetBlue has 162 seats on their A320s. Or is it 169? Somebody correct me.

I don't know how many seats in JetBlue A320's...

But Star Airlines, who will operate a weekly charter flight CDG-BEY this summer has the maximum in its A320 : 180 seats.

Air France has 172 seats in a single Y class on the A320 based at ORY and used for the French domestic flights.

The AF's A320 based at CDG and used on the European network are fitted with 159 seats.

Lufthansa has 150 seats in its A320 (same pitch as AF but with a larger galley at the front/right and an additional toilet at the front/left).

FLYSSC

Orient-le-Jour is a serious newspaper indeed, but the credibility of the people giving them the news is doubtful ( MenaJet ).
The 2 A320-232 were not delivered by the leasing company because MenaJet could not secure the required downpayement before delivery, and were thus delivered to AeroFlight. They are now looking in the used market for any A320 to start operations for the summer, abd have not found one yet. They have a booked program with Lebanese tour operator Nakhal for the summer.
Even though they call it Low Cost carrier, MenaJet will be a charter operator flying for Lebanese/European Tour Operators.

FLYSSC,

My understanding is that MenaJet is owned by Al-Zamil Group (Saudi Arabia) and a Bahraini Commercial Bank and they had planned to register and base the airline in Sharjah, UAE. Why they changed the plan? Was it because of Air Arabia being first in Sharjah?

MEA330,

You are probably right. Thanks for the information...
A lot of people are talking about this "new" airline in Beirut as they have announced so cheaper fares than AF/ME on the BEY-PARIS route...
I felt also a kind of "anti-M.E.A" campain in Lebanon as more and more people protest against the supposed prohibitive fares & monopoly of the National airline on certain routes.
MenaJet announced a $200/$250 for a round trip BEY-ORY-BEY... they gave hope to a lot of people...who could be very disappointed...  Sad

So menaJet will not be starting up anytime soon? Why were they not able to pay for the A320s?

So they will become a charter carrier and not a low-cost carrier?

What a shame.......

MenaJet might still start this summer there still is hope.
They always were going to be a charter airline, as in Lebanon MEA is the only carrier allowed to operate scheduled flights. Their administration is always saying they are a low Cost carrier, I guess they need a few lessons in airline management.
As for the details of why they did not have the money to pay for the previous leases..... That's the biggest mystery in Lebanese aviation, as MenaJet is owned by 2 big investment corporations with a Capital of around 53 Million$US.

MEA330,

Did they suddenly change their mind from being a low cost carrier to a charter carrier when they decided to move their operations to Beirut?

I know about that law in which MEA can be the only Lebanese-based carrier that can operate scheduled flights but I thought the Lebanese government may have made or is planning to cancel this rule.

Because I am positive that I heard menaJet will operate scheduled flights to Barcelona on a 2x weekly basis....

If only there was more commerce between Lebanon and the U.S.

United Airlines and U.S. Airways both have A320s sitting in the Mohave Desert, collecting dust. These could have easily picked up by menaJet because the bankrupt airlines are looking to liquidate some of their assets recently.

Its a shame however, to see that airlines with great potential are being held back by the issue of aircraft acquisition.

This can be good news even if menaJet fails to take off. It is good news that we can have another airline besides MEA, even though it will be charter. I keep seeing so many charter airlines using the Beirut market and always felt sorry that there wasn't a Lebanese airline to benefit from it.
Hopefully, we can even have a second scheduled airline too.

MEA321,

I think that if menaJet wanted to lease or buy A320s from a US airline, they can do so through a leasing company. Remember that MEA still leases planes from ILFC, which is a US company.

BA,

I think it is understood that MenaJet will (would ?) operate both "Low Cost" regular flights AND some unscheduled Charter flights.
They really didn't need two aircrafts to operate 2 X BCN + 2 or 3 X ORY and a few flights in the Gulf...Look at the flights scheduled by M.E.A with only 9 a/c...!

FLYSSC,

BCN, ORY and few Gulf destinations were "leaked" info and probably they had better plans for the 2 A320s they were planning to lease.

BCN sounds strange to me...

But definitely, ORY would be a great success for them if they would really sell their tickets at the fare of $200 or $250 as advertised !

BCN sounds quite wierd to me too. Paris will be a success and so will London, if they get clearance to fly to one of the airports there.

OD720,

I don't think BCN is wierd. Certainly isn't as big of a market as Paris for example, but I think it could do quite well, especially by a low-fare carrier.

Horus,

London Stansted was mentioned originally back in February. But I don't think they are planning to go to London, they were just some ideas.

Did you get my email? Still waiting for a reply.  Smile
