America West Going To Brazil?

Mon May 10, 2004 5:38 am

I heard strong rumors that HP might be going to Rio soon.  Wow!  Big thumbs up But how would they get there? Would the 757s reach? I mean, Brazil is a long way away from PHX and many airlines fly there from nearby places like Los Angeles, Houston and Dallas. So why would HP go there? Would they have to lease another a/c like a 767? Or put extra tanks on the 75's?

Welcome to A.net!! If I had to guess, I would say it would be a 757 via San Jose, Costa Rica. BTW, what is your source on this rumor?

I think the only way you will ever see HP in GIG is if you chartered the Airplane from them and asked to be taken there.
I so doubt that will happen anytime soon nor do I think they are even discussing it. HP has a very conservative route planning dept. They would not talk about SanJuan SJU as an extension of the Miami service so I would be very shocked if they ever brought up GIG. Perhaps you misunderstood and overheard that an HP employee finally saved up enough money to afford a GIG vacation. On the pay they get that would be news in itself !!!

Many rumors run inside an airline that is just a rumor. I'd check and make sure your source is reliable. Not that Im doubting you, but I highly doubt they are going to Rio.

America West doesn't have very many B757s right now, and seems to need that capacity domestically. A route like PHX-SJO-GIG would tie up aircraft.

Firstly, govenmental approval would be required, the US and Brazil are not open skies countries and there is a very strict bi-lateral agreement.....I remember that AA had to go through all kinds of hurdles to upgrade flights to Brazil from 763 to 777 aircraft as not only the flights, but the number of seats in a market, are controlled. Thus, HP could not just start up a service to Brazil.

Phoenix to Rio, I dont see it happening......Rio is primarily a leisure destination, any real money to be made on flights to Brazil in on service to Sao Paolo. Its also a very long haul route, certainly out of range for the 757 and I do not see America West acquiring long-range aircraft for this route.....if HP wanted to get into the long-haul business again (dont forget the Hawaii/Japan-747 incident that nearly but this airline out of business) I would think that a route from Phoenix to a European capital would make more sense (then again, LH could not make PHX-AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA work). Also, as pointed out, if HP did something odd like fly a 757 from PHX to Rio via SJO or another city, it would tie up atleast 2 to 3 757s to operate the one route, again not likely.

By the way, is the PHX-SJO route launched by HP a success?

I hear that HP's SJO-PHX flight is sometimes weight restricted due to wind. When that happens they're only able to go out half full on their A319. I was going to non-rev down there this week but the HP station manager advised me of the weight restrictions and that even though the flight looked open I might not be able to get on. If that's the case I doubt that SJO would be a good stop over point.

Yes that rumor has been around for a while. I heard it as well. I think expansion to South America would be great, and there certainly is money to be made down there. However like others stated, we would need a larger plane. According to the Boeing website, the 757 wouldn't make it from PHX to Rio or even Sao Paulo for that matter.

The SJO flight has done very well and I know we are looking at other cities down there, most likely BZE would be on the top of the list.
Catch a ride on a smile!

I agree, lets move on. No offense but America West would be my last choice to go to Brazil!
