Meet At PHL May 23rd?

Mon May 10, 2004 6:39 am

Hello All,

I figured I would make the post now since the date is only 2 weeks away. Since most people said the end of May early June would be good for them. I think May 23rd would be good as it is the inaugural service day for F9 in PHL (can't wait to see those gorgeous tails). Today the 9th would have been a better meet (you know why), but since most couldn't make it then I guess we should get together the next inaugural day. The date of May 23rd would be great for me and since I was planning on being down there on this date anyway, I would just like to run it by the rest of you. Anybody else want to add any other dates to the list of possibilities? I hope I can meet everyone else that didn't make it March 21st, It would be nice to even see some of you non - PHL people in the area Big grin.

Take care,
Ed

I would love too, but I have to go to a christining that morning. Usually, I work Sundays, so I was hoping the next one would be on a Saturday, but oh well.

I would love to finally meet you all. But I will not be able to make it out there until some time that afternoon (around 2 to 3). Will anyone be out there then?

May 23rd works for me (but then again any weekend will - you can see what a great and busy social life I have). PHLBOS: If anyone wants to see F9 we'll have to be there late in the afternoon anyway, as the only arrival at a decent time is around 4:15 PM. Air France arrives around 4:00 PM everyday now too, usually after Lufthansa.

I look forward to seeing everyone again and meeting some of our other PHL locals.

Joe,

Thanks for the 'heads-up' on F9's afternoon arrival. I should have looked in the PHL timetable; the flight number listed is 448. It sounds like a plan.

Yea, Chris and Dan, I stay normally all day at the Hog Island Rd spot at 27R. But after Speedbird 069 comes in at 6:00 - 6:30. I head over to 9R to get Speedbird 066 at 7:00 and Air Fronce 365, lol at 7:15.

Hey Ed, Where do you normally hang out at on the 9R end? I've only gone donw there once, very briefly for a shot of AF 379 departing at 5:30 or so (back when it still was AF 378/9). They've got "No parking" signs all along that stretch down there, so the cops never let you stay long. I know Paul Kanagie has a good spot in some sort of gravel pull off area for awesome 9R arrival shots.

Joe (Wagz),

Last Saturday, I discovered a spot at the a bunch of warehouses at the intersection of Front & Pourson Streets in Tinicum Township.

To get there from Rt. 291, Turn at Scott Way and follow to Tinicum Island Road. Follow T.I. Road to the intersection of 2nd St. and 4th Ave. Turn LEFT onto 2nd Street and follow to the first intersection past the railroad tracks and the Smart Park lot. Turn LEFT onto Pourson and follow to the parking area behind the warehouses. You can park right to the river's edge and get an awesome view of planes either approaching 9R or taking off 27L.

This was where I saw the first 3 WN planes come in. I stayed for about 4 hours; no hassles, no police, the parking area's deserted barring occasional people going fishing. The warehouses are closed on the weekends. A black-and-white cat and a woodchuck/beaver strolled by to keep me company.

While one can't necessarily see the airport from here, you can definitely see some air action along with a few boats along the river. Big grin

Joe, About three weekends ago I was a PHL basically all weekend, lol. Well we just pull to the side of the road on the right side its a tight shoulder but its ok in the daytime and on the opposite side next to the tracks there is a slight embankment like where the ballast is but its more room there then the right shoulder. Yes, there is a gravel pull off area, it might work maybe for a larger car, you'll see. A friend and I stood right in the middle of the field at the edge of 9R (Its nice they start the turn to 255 right over you) and a cop went by and he didn't say a thing, not a peep, he looked and slowed but keep going. My friends dad was parked at the side of the tracks and still the cop keep driving. You don't necessarily need to be in that field, Hog Island Rd is on higher elevation than the field so you get a nice view. I took a pic of AF 365 with the sunset, just incredible. It would have made a great photo if you or Paul got it. So after AF's departure, I heard something coming and looked up to see a US EMB-170 which I had seen come in about 20 mins after I moved down a bit close to 35, of course my battery had just died like a minute
earlier. Anyway the pics didn't turn out because of processing mistakes and somewhat bad film (that's why I cant wait till I get a digital right before I leave for FLL June 22nd and finally start getting a.net pics Big grin) BTW, I would like to talk to you the 23rd when we meet up about camera's I should look into. Back to the story, you can see the departures landing lights coming at you barreling down 27L atop the Road. It will make for some nice sunset photos

Chris, Got an estimate on how high up traffic is when they pass over that spot?

Ed,

Off hand, I'm not too sure, but I do know that you do not have to tilt your head that much to see them. In most instances, one can read the registration number on most of the planes. In the office, there was a Part 77 approach surface map for PHL which we overlayed on a USGS map. If I can find that map, I can give you a possible answer.

Regards,
Chris

Ok, I would really like one more count of who is going, just incase someone has not seen this post and would like to go. Now most are coming between 12 - 2, right? I myself will get there between 8 - 10 and will be there till about 7:30. My friend that lives in Greenwich, CT ( use to live near EWR) he's making the trip all the way down  Smile.

Vik, I talked to my Mom, she would rather drive me down herself then I'll just take the train back home. So it would be nice if either you, Josh or Mike's dad could take me to the terminals to catch the R1.

Ok so far head count is Myself, Chris, Vik, Dan, Mike (not on a.net) and Josh (not on a.net). Can anyone else confirm if they can go and how long they will be staying.

I might also be able to go to this event at PHL; I haven't been there since spring break (March) and I'm anxious to see Southwest jets in the mix with the rest. Also if Frontier is coming in and ERJ170s those are some other incentives!

WindowSeat,

According to the 'Rule Book', the NEW guy (that being you) brings the pizza and beer. You also have to do a little dance for us. Nothing too embarrassing, but you have to be better than Michael Jackson (Bryan came up with that rule). You also have to be able to recite the entire phonetic alphabet backwards... Curt--That would be fantastic if you're thinking about coming up. Been wanting to meet you. Usually I've been the organizer of the PHL spotters gatherings but Ed stepped in which is cool. I'd say that we should plan on meeting at Atlantic Aviation at around 12:30. Nothing to watch up until then (well, US 737's but they come a dime a dozen) unless you plan on getting down there at 7AM. What do you guys think?

Like I said earlier, I will be there before most people. So I'll be at the "bend" when everyone arrives at AA.

Vik, so what time do you think you will get to PHL, I CAN work around your timing. Since you are driving so far.

Ryan, the 23rd is indeed a Sunday.

Altogether, we have 13 people including myself, WOW  Nuts. There are about 3 people that are not positive they can make it (If we hear from Greg). I hope everyone can make it, cause I know we will have a really great time, listening to some good stories and stuff.

Since I would not be able to arrive until 2-2:30 PM due to a prior commitment; where do you plan on being following the initial meeting at Atlantic Aviation?

I realize the decided spotting location will depend on which direction the planes will be taking off and landing. If you can give me a heads-up on probable locations, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Bryan, 12:30 sounds good to me. It's really dead down there between like 9:00 and 12:00 anyway. Now that the dirty French plane won't arrive until 4:00 we have nothing to worry about.

PHLBOS: assuming 27R ops that day, which is most likely, we'll probably be along Hog Island Rd near the curve Ed reffered to looking at the scenic "Wagner Tree" that makes it in to most of my photos:

Photo © Joseph K Wagner

From this location one can take "Wagner Shots" such as this, and listen to 757 wake turbulance whitsle through the tree tops. Specifically its after the Fort Mifflin Entrance and the concrete barrier along the road on the south side of the approach.

Now, if its 9R ops that day, who knows. That end of the airport is a little bit iffier. Although, I asked Paul Kanagie about that end, and he says he stays in a gravel parking area until important aircraft are close, then he moves down to the touchdown area for the photo.

Looks like this should be a pretty good meet.

Wagz,

It sounds like a plan. I know the intersection you're talking about for the 27R landings. Heck, I was there last Sunday afternoon/evening. Just look for a dark (Philadelphia Eagles helmet color) green '97 Ford Crown Victoria crusing along Hog Island Road between 2 and 3 PM; that'll be me.

I'm looking forward to this meeting.

We would like to drive up from DC and plan to be there from noon until 5pm or 6pm.

I'm still unclear about locations. As a passenger, I've been to PHL dozens of times. But I've never driven around the airport and don't know the spotting locations at all.

One person mentioned Atlantic Aviation @ 12:30, and someone else mentioned the "Wagner tree".

Maybe we could trade cell phone numbers in advance?

I'll be driving a blue Jaguar XK8 convertible with 'CONVAIR' license plates.

So guys, we need a concensus on the time here. Does 12:30 at Atlantic Aviation suit everyone? Need to hear some yea's and nea's here.

Curt, as for finding your way around: Coming north on I-95, you're going to exit via the Island Avenue exit which is just past the airport. Once you take that exit, you're going to come down an off ramp and end up with a traffic light right infront of you. Island Avenue is one of the perimeter roads of the field, so whatever you do always have the mentality to stay close to the airfrield and on Island Avenue and you can't make a wrong move. Proceed down Island Avenue, following the perimeter of the airfield. Go past the big old ugly blue International Terminal which will be on your right (this is no longer in use, but sometimes US will put birds on the stand over there). Island Avenue makes a swift bend to the left, and at this bend, Atlantic Aviation will be on your right. Just pull into the parking lot and you'll see a group of schmucks standing there. Wonder who those guys will be!? Once we all gather, we'll caravan on out to Hog Island Rd. As you exit Atlantic Aviation, you're going to turn right to proceed further down Island Avenue. At the first intersection (theres a stop sign), you turn right. There are signs denoting this as Fort Mifflin Rd., however this is trying Hog Island Rd. so don't let that throw you off. Proceed down Hog Island, under the overpass, and where we park will be on the left about 1/4 mile past the approach path for 27L.

Hey Ed, I think that might be Paul you saw down there. I've seen that Toyota about a million times before. I know Paul just bought a shiny new Canon Digital Rebel DSLR, that's why he's been uploading shots to the database like crazy. One need only look at his UPS MD11 takeoff shot to become jealous.

Concord997, I think Bryan nailed the directions right on the head, but then again I'm coming from the opposite direction, from the North via I-95 South. The "Wagner Tree" is just a little joke we came up with last time reffering to a tree where we'll be spotting from after we caravan.

I'd say 12:30 is good. There's nothing to look at but US 737s and CRJs before that. At least getting toward 2:00 all the transatlantic heavies start appearing out of nowhere.

One other thought just crossed my mind.... If evereyone in this thread comes like they say they will, there won't be enough parking spots at Atlantic to hold all of us. There was barely room for 4 cars last time!

For me, I'll be coming from rowing practice (at boathouse row), which ends who knows when. So if I can't make it at 12:30 at AA i'll just drive around looking for a group of plane-watching idiots  Smile.

Well just to let you guys know, I went down to Hog Island Rd. this evening as a minor detour on my way home from Andrews AFB (went to their airshow this year which rocked--Ryan, you'll be happy to know that I go to prance around in my favorite (the KC-10), sat in the cockpit, sat in the pax seating area, walked through the cargo area, and even down into the boom operators room). Anyways, as for PHL, got to see BA 772, 744, AF A332, US Airways 733 bare metal 'No booking fees. No brainer.' titles, Pace 737-200, as well as the usual stuff. What's interesting is that there were people stopped all along Hog Island, all the way down to the UPS terminal, on both sides of the road, and people up along the fence and everything without a cop in sight and the cops weren't pestering anyone. Hell, I got up to the fence and got some candid shots of a US A321, hope they turned out! I'll let ya know.

What do they usually have in store at the McGuire shows? I've heard its a lot of heavy stuff, C-17s, C-141s, C5s etc. That would be fine with me, because I am a staunch believer of bigger is better.

I've only been to a few Willow Grove shows. They kind of suck actually. Although in 2002 I did get to poke around in a Navy DC-9-30 (C-9 I believe).

Bryan, send me an IM and show me some of those pictures from PHL last night. I'd like to see your exploits in early evening photography.

I have been to a few Willow Grove shows in the past. Saw the Thunderbirds, Blue Angels, F-14's, and the stealth. Not too bad, but i'm sure there are many other shows that are far better.

I was at PHL yesterday from 12pm to 4pm. Got pics of 067 (G-BNLW), AF 366 (F-GZCM). I left after 426 (D-AIGW) came in. I got two photos of a US EMB-170 (can't read Reg#) he came in a bit high, caught one mustard gold WN 737-700 without winglets (N7525W not getting any positive searches for the Reg#, maybe one number is looking like another) I saw a Canyon Blue WN 737-700 with winglets and I got the bare aluminum US Air 73 (N573US). If anybody wants to see some of the better ones they can IM me at Custom Painta or just wait till Sunday. Speaking of cops about 3 went by and I was standing on the top of my Dad's Blazer, not a single one said something. I got some nice parallel shots when standing on the roof. I also met someone that pulled up to snap some shots, he said he looks at the forum but is not a member  Sad.
