ORD Weather Delays Today :(

Mon May 10, 2004 7:48 am

It is a bad day for Ohare travelers! I'm sitting on UA661 on the taxiway in EWR right now and have been for about 50 mins. Captain is saying potentially 2hrs more before we depart. Is the weather in ORD really that bad today? Is it normal to keep pax on the plane for such a long delay? Eco plus isn't bad but the lack of food is going to be an issue! I've resigned myself to the fact that I'll be missing my connection and overnighting in ORD  Sad.

>>>I've resigned myself to the fact that I'll be missing my connection and overnighting in ORD

Not an absolute certainty here, but just something to keep in mind, but it's entirely possible that the flight that you were going to connect to at ORD is -also- late, so you might make it.

The weather isn't so much in the ORD area proper, it's basically in the NE quadrant from ORD, and the Pullman (PMM) arrival is the problem, since the weather has it pretty much covered up. All the traffic that would normally use PMM is having to come in from the SE, along with all the other traffic that normally comes in that way. (The proverbial 2x demand versus 1x capacity).

Thanks for the inside scoop  Smile The captain has channel 9 turned off (bummer) so I am out of the loop. Captain just said one more hour until our next update (making it 2 hours from when we started to taxi). He said ATC cannot make up their mind and has gone all over the board from 1 more hour to 4 more hours in terms of our wheels up time. As long as the laptop battery holds out I'll manage! Does dominos deliver to taxi-way alpha in EWR?

OPNLguy,
Is there anyway to get status updates on which arrivals are opened / closed or new wheels up times for flights on the internet ..or does that require a scanner in ORD? Thanks,

I can tell you something, Guys!! We were in ORD from last year of July 2003. It is very long delayed because with events of the weather. It is nothing wrong with those weather in ORD. I saw alot of those airplanes in ORD. It is terrible for us. I did miss with my B767-400 flight to FLL and they did make me for my next flight to FLL on the B767-300 at 6:55pm.

The ATCSCC website will give general info on ground stops, and (sometimes) what arrivals may be open/closed but airline-specific info on wheels-up times comes into the airline itself, and I'm not aware of of any place it's available on the net. DTW is getting hammered too...

Where are you connecting to?

That's too bad that the capitain turned off channel 9 on you. My best in-aircraft delay was a 2 hour delay on the Scenic Hold Pad at ORD waiting for a thunderstorms to clear. The captain had channel 9 on the whole time and time flew by. It was so interesting hearing the controlers and aircraft that night.

Central PA is covered in T-storms which I'm sure is affecting traffic into the NYC and PHL area. Usually most westbound traffic in and out of NYC flies over this year. I'm sure New York Center is loving it.

By the way, get used to it, I have a feeling ORD is going to be horrendous this summer in terms of delays, something we haven't seen in the past 2-3 summers. The number of flights at ORD is up to where it was in 2000, although many more RJ flights than before. This means, whenever the weather craps out, traffic delays into ORD will certainly bottleneck. Throw some wind in the mix, and ORD goes down to 2 runways, then it becomes a real mess. I got to experience that a few weeks ago. When connecting avoid ORD simply due to the delay factor.

If your laptop battery still has juice and you get this, they now have storms SW of the ORD/MDW areas moving NE, and they expect wx at the airport within the hour...so, more delays...

I hope you have your pajamas in your carry-on bag--you may need them....  Big grin

Sounds like when I flew LAS-ORD on UA last July. 4 hours waiting on the ground (in 110 degree heat) before ground-stop into ORD was lifted. Not fun!

Good god...according to UA's website, they are estimating arrival into ORD at 10:14 PM CDT...which I'm assuming means you'll have an hour or so at least until wheels-up...

The weather at ORD was great, it was about 93 Fahrenheit or 32 Celsius with sunny skies until about 6:30 pm, we are now expecting thunderstorms and Im looking out my window and it looks like we might get a couple of tornadoes also... I hope you make it to ORD but I see your chances of making it here very, very slim. Weather is turning really bad.

You'll also be thrilled to know that once they do cut 661 EWR-ORD loose, it appears that you'll be coming into ORD via SSM and TVC, so enjoy the "polar" route...  Big grin

Not an ATC person, mind you, but basically, the ATC facilities that are all getting whacked by the weather are all specifying what kind of miles-in-trail (MIT) separation they want between aircraft. The normal 5-10 miles is up to 25-30 miles, and it's to account for aircraft deviating around weather.

For those still interested in MikeM2648's saga, his flight 661 EWR-ORD is now actually airborne, but he's taking the long way around the weather via Sault St. Marie and Traverse City Michigan, about 3 hours enroute...

Will he make his connection, or will he be stranded with 57,000 other misconnected passengers?

(Maybe he'll tell us, eventually....)  Big grin

Good news for MikeM2648: flight 661 is estimated by UA to arrive at gate C26 at 10:31, and flight 7690 is estimated to depart from gate F-12 at 11:00...he'll have to do the long walk between terminals at ORD, but he could be alright if he high-tails it...

My ASD shows UA661 into ORD at 0348Z/2248C, based on the re-route via northern Michigan. They could theoretically cut the corner around the end of the weather at Alpena MI, and get in a tad earlier, but it's hard to say if that will happen due to all the traffic. It's still also possible than his ORD-LAN flight will be delayed beyond what is posted.

Ooooh, the drama....  Big grin

According to my detective work, the flight that represents BLR (Atlantic Coast) 690 is Blue Ridge 557 from Jacksonville...according to UA's website, gets into ORD at 10:37...

Edit: HOLY SHOOT, according to flytecomm, they have that CRJ flying roughly over BHM, Paducah, KY (on the Mississippi River), and STL...

Just noticed that UAL661 got to cut the corner at Alpena, and didn't have to go all the way to SSM. As a result, his ETA is now :10 earlier at 0338Z, and it appears UAL 661 will actually get to ORD before BLR557... He may make his connection yet...  Big grin

I was on American 66 DFW-ORD today (777!), and we almost got stuck in a holding pattern. Luckily (for me, at least), it seems like most of the delays were affecting outgoing flights.

Love the thunderstorms otherwise!

Looks like EWR-ORD UA 661 made it in at 10:25pm and his connection ORD-LAN on UA 7690 didn't depart until 11:33pm partially because the inbound aircraft operating as UA7557/BLR557 from JAX didn't get in until 10:45pm.

I made it!! When We landed in Ohare at C8 at 10:30 the boards were showing 10:40 for the lansing flight from F11 so I ran. I think i deserve a medal!! I made it from C8 to F11 in 6 minutes even. I ran (fast) nearly the entire way but couldnt for the whole duration because Im not in good enough shape to do that w/ my laptop on my back. When I finally got to F11 it was aparent that the Lansing flight was not leaving for a while so in the end my bags and I both made it.

After waiting on the ground in EWR for nearly 3 hours the captain finally said we would be going but after taxiing to the runway he pulled aside again and told us that ATC had just informed of a bizzare routing and they needed to check w/ chicago to see if they had enough fuel to make it. They also said that they needed to program all the new fixes into the computer and determine what altitude would be best for conserving fuel......not exactly what we all wanted to hear! Captain said we would be going north over Cambridge Mass, into canada, across northern michigan, and then back down.

The flight was pretty normal once in air (except for being twice as long..) except that all service items were depleted before we even took off. After we turned south towards ohare (somewhere over wisconson / northern michigan, or the lake...hard to tell) we had to deviate around some lightning and the pilot yelled for the flight attendant to sit down at one point. The pilots did not come out to say goodbye and the cockpit door was locked during deplaining. I think they were doing their work for the continueing leg to STL. By the time all was over with we had spent 6 hours on that 737 ...is that a record????

I made the run to F11 and listened to my voicemail on the way. "Easy Update" called to inform me they had rebooked me on the morning flight to Lansing (even though I was there in time to make the delayed evening flight). I got to the gate and the flight to LAN was full because an earlier one had been cancelled but they got me on sice I was still holding my original boarding pass for the evening flight. It is interesting to note that if I did not subscribe to easy update I would never have known that they gave my seat on that flight to someone else and booked me on the morning flight assuming that I wouldnt make it......very strange!!! We woulda had the "two people with the same boarding pass" phenomina......As usual terminal F was complete and udder madness. One group of unluckly souls came down to the F11 holding area and said this was their 4rth gate change ..but ..I didnt get to chat w/ them for long as they had a 5th gate change and had to run back to F2.

I made it to Lansing around 1:30am as did my bags. The CRJ flight was longer than normal and we appeared to be looping around to avoid weather. Flight attendant was not allowed out of her seat for the entire flight and we landed in LAN in heavy rain / wind. We used up at least 50% of the runway before the wheels touched down and he put it down really hard. The main gear went down semi hard and the nose was completely slammed down (very loud). The breaking action was the most I have ever felt on a CRJ and the flight attendant (who was somehow still engergetic) came on the PA during the stop and said "Wheeeeeeeeeeeeee". We stopped 50 feet from the end of the runway.....seems very odd to me!! ..but ...we made it. Thanks for all the updates. I'll be going LAN - SAN in 2 weeks and I'm hoping for better weather in ORD,

-Mike

Good to hear you got back safe and sound - looks like UA's EasyUpdate worked well and despite all the ATC/Weather issues, your bags didn't get lost... I'd have to say UA has been really good operationally, even during challenging times!

I arrived into ORD yesterday at about 4:30pm on American 041 from Paris-CDG. There were storms out over the lake to the east and southeast, so instead of the usual approach over the water and the northern suburbs, we had to detour way the hell out over Wisconsin.

Made our approach over Appleton/Oshkosh, Beaver Dam, Madison, Beloit/Janesville and finally onto ORD 14R. It was sunny and beautiful at O'Hare when we landed - just some scattered clouds and almost 90 degrees outside!

Forecast for today (Monday) is scattered storms all day - it's sunny and clear right now though. That's actually our forecast for the entire week.
