W Coast - Caribbean N/S?

Mon May 10, 2004 8:51 am

Do you think a West Coast - Caribbean flight could work? I know TWA operated a Daily 757 from Los Angeles to San Juan, but was it profitable? Maybe a once weekly Los Angeles or San Francisco to Punta Cana or Aruba flight could work. Or is it E Coasters go to the Caribbean and W Coasters go to Hawaii and Mexico (generally speaking, of course)?

Thank you,

Air Jamaica used to have LAX-MBJ nonstop. It was a wonderful flight. I took it twice and it was rather full... The potential is there I assume its all about price and marketing.

I know AirJamaica flys MBJ-PHX. I know back in the 70's, DL used to fly LAX-SJU with DC-8's. On again, off again. The same with TW as well as AA. It just seems to me, it's just more of a seasonal route IMHO.  Smile

The wealthier people on the west coast go to Hawaii or Tahiti (or other south Pacific Islands) and others go to Mexico. It takes so long to get to the Caribbean that it is often not worth it. Most of the interesting islands (such as Aruba, St. Maarten, St. Thomas) take 2 or 3 flights and at least 10 hours to get to today. Mexico and Hawaii are a straight shot, and in general are just as nice (and expensive). Of course there are many exceptions, but it is more about proximity and convenience to those that travel.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

JM still flies LAX-MBJ. I wish they would start weekend service to SFO, that would be great. AA is offering LAX-SJU right now, they started last year. I would love to see an SFO-AUA flight on TZ, or maybe SFO-SJU on AA, both would be cool. However, I don't think the demand exists.

Actually AA started LAX-SJU this past winter 3 times a week and it's going up to 5 weekly for the summer operated with a 767-300- I believe this is AA's longest domestic flight. As it has been mentioned above Air Jamaica still flies between MBJ and LAX.

I think JM dropped PHX. When they did fly to PHX didn't it stop in ATL or somewhere on the east coast?

They did drop PHX, but it operated non-stop from MBJ.

I believe this is AA's longest domestic flight.

Not even close.

ORD-HNL is nearly 1000mi longer.... and then there's DFW-HNL, et al.
