ATA Flt. 279 Diverted?

Mon May 10, 2004 2:48 pm

Hey, I was wondering if someone knows why ATA flight 279 from EWR-MDW diverted on Sunday night. I have a friend who was on the flight and he was supposed to connect to ATA Connection to TOL. Obviously he missed his connection, but I was wondering why the plane was diverted to IND. Does anyone have any info? Also would ATA be responsible for putting him up in a hotel in Chicago until tomorrow when he can go out on the next flight?

Depends on the reason for the divirsion and ATA's policy, if it was a weather divirsion he may be out of luck....but usually the airline is nice if they do not pay for a hotel they usuaully offer a discount to the effect of 40%.....if it is a mechincal problem with the plane or something ATA "could have prevented" Yes they will put him up.....Delta was nice enough to put we up a couple of weeks ago when I got delayed becuase of the comp. thing in ATL...really wasn't their fault but nice of them

Apologies for what undoubtedly was not a pleasant start to your friend's trip.

279 had to divert to IND for 29 minutes to add fuel due to the line of thunderstorms that snuck up on MDW last night.

ATA's policy is to offer the next available TZ flight as reprotection to customers inconvenienced by weather/ATC. MDW usually follows policy but they have been known to deviate.

The weather was pretty rough here tonight. Our 7:59P flight was close to blocking out when the MDW ground stop was implemented. The flight left at 9:57P after we waited for the FAA to lift the GS and for the weather to pass overhead so it was safe to board and depart.

Hope your friend enjoys his stay in TOL,

joe

I know weather isn't the airlines fault, but it's pretty funny, that he's only been on ATA twice, both time he had to spend the night in MDW. The first time was because he got on his TOL-MDW flight and when he arrived in MDW they cancelled his EWR flight because of snow in EWR and this time was I guess weather in MDW. I know it isn't the airlines fault but for some reason I highly doubt he will be flying ATA anytime soon. Normally he uses CO or NW but being that he booked same day ATA was the cheapest at $300.

Yesterday was an interesting weather day. Our 759p was close to leaving GRR when we hit the ground stop. It finally got permission to leave at 835p which was great as no passengers would miss thier connectionc. Sorry about the inconvienance for you friend. It's prett crappy when mother nature does these things and screws up passengers. If it is any consollation for him. ORD DTW and CLE where also having weather problems last night. I believe GRR even saw some NW diversions yesterday as the weather rolled through DTW. And it looks like we are in for another round all week. Not a good week to travel.
