Convair 990 For Sale On Ebay - Any Takers?

Mon May 10, 2004 6:28 pm

The link below is for a Convair 990 Coronado that is described as being capable of being returned to airworthiness. Maybe everyone on A.net should get together and buy it,  Big grin. Although the auction has ended, it has a "buy it now" price tag of $88,000.....

Not that "expensive" ... If I would have the money, I would go for it and put it into my garden ...

Anybody know if permission was given? This is definitely being used for profitable purposes, and I would definitely want a slice of that pie if that was my picture!

The auction is legit.
The aircraft was last operated by Ports-of-Call, the Denver based air travel club.
Be advised, past due parking charges are the responsibility of the new owner...and parking at ELP ain't cheap.
The aircraft is in very good condition, last time I looked, about six months ago.
No external corrosion visible...don't know about internal.
To ferry the aircraft would require the equivalent of an 'A' check, plus pitot/static/transponder check, and engine borescope check/runs.
Figure $15,000.
Fuel consumption is 1790 gal/hr.

A bargin at twice the price...to go FAST.

hahaha!

It's going to be such a shame if no-one buys the aircraft you know, especially as it can be made airworthy for such a small price ($15,000 for the A check to be allowed to ferry) ...

I wish people who were fans of aviation were also multi millionaires  Smile

Poor Convair 990  Sad

Truly a bargain price for a transport aircraft that COULD crack the sound barrier at full throttle (okay, maybe along with a bit of tailwind)! Hey, it was done with a DC-8, years ago. Being the only fully restorable example of its type left only sweetens the pie. Surely, SOMEONE will scarf it up. John Travolta would probably grab it in a heartbeat for his collection, not that he NEEDS another large airplane. You'd think that General Dynamics, which absorbed Convair years ago, might pick it up for posterity and then, maybe, donate it to a worthy museum. Anyway, I hope this glorious old bird finds SOME kind of a good home; may it NEVER be forlornly sent to the scrapyard!

I've been following this story closely. Believe me, the auction is legit, this is millionaire David Tokoph's plane. But some technicality got the auction stopped. I don't understand.

Am I missing something here? How do you know it's a bargain? The auction says that the reserve price has not been met and we don't know what the reserve price is.

Edited - stupid me! Just saw the buy it now price of $88,000. Sorry!
